Noir at its best

I had been trying to obtain a copy of this dvd for some time and was delighted to finally purchase it via amazon. It is a beautifully presented dvd with three superb examples of what makes film noir (a movement, not a genre!). Aldrich's direction is as tight and claustrophobic as you would expect and the cinematography of John Alton can be seen to define all the charactersitics associated with noir. Long may films such as these be available on dvd.

But I'm A Cheerleader - movie DVD cover picture
A comedy with a message.

I was very lucky I just happened to turn to this show late one night. Since then I've seen it several times. I'll have to remind myself to record it the next time I see it.
But I'm a Cheerleader is a charming little, much overlooked comedy who most wouldn't pay attention to simply because of it's controversy. The movie relies on using stereotypes and then clashing that with things you would never expect to get luaghs, which actually works quite well here. There are the classic lesbians: the renegade tom boy, the quiet nerd, the mustached football girl, and the snotty (not to mention HOT) goth (my personal favorite charcter). What makes it funny is adding a cheer leader to the mix, someone you really wouldn't expect to be gay, and this is the theme the movie revolves around.
I liked this film for more than it's humor, though. It has a very good message: to be yourself, no matter what people think of you. In the cheer leader's love interest's words: "You are who you are, the only trick is not getting caught". How true that is.

Great products are based on great materials.

They could hardly go wrong with the eagerly anticipated continuation of the West Wing DVD series. Season four exemplifies a lot that is best about the show, and gives you the best cliff hanger yet. I have never regretted a West Wing purchase and do not now.

Tops for Parodies!

As far as Comedies go, this one takes the cake. Years after not being able to view it (due to it not being available on dvd in a dvd only household) my family is *still* quoting the movie. It is so funny you won't be able to forget it! When we found out it was on dvd, we HAD to buy it. If you love comedies, you will love this movie...

Wow...

I have no idea what the reviewer from Thank You, India is saying, because I thought the movie was the one of the best I have seen in a long time. Superb acting and a witty and moving script, not to mention surprisingly warm direction from Gus Van Sant really carries it through. I usually don't approve of language, but here I think it really shows the characters as the foul mouthed, frustrated Boston nobodies they are. They know they will never go anywhere in their life, and their language I think reflects their anger at the world they live in. The script and movie were so well knit (even the title has a double meaning-unusual) that the Oscars given to it were the best-deserved in years. Buy this movie!!!

Understanding The Last Of The Samurai

It's unfortunate that some people dont see the true beauty of this film, like me if you are a anime fan you should see it. The last samurai is great from beginning to end the fight scenes were great and the story and plot was so perfect it's almost unbelievable. Even though the story is fake the families involved and the events that make this story come to life are all historic facts. These men died in battle and even know they died they died to get their point across and to be heard when they needed to be heard the most. It was a fight that couldn't be won but to these men it was either fight and die proud or run and you would be forced to kill yourself and die a coward, they died and the rest of their family lived to fight another day.Tom cruse did a great job in this movie but the awards should go to Ken watanabe or Katsumoto and the other men/samurai who made this movie great. To end this some peolple need to be told that before watching this movie dont mistake it for a fraud because some people expect Tom cruse to be the last samurai and seeing that he is not of japanese descent that might bother some people and it's nothing like that because I judged this movie before seeing it and I was dead wrong and suprised at what saw and loved this movie.

Pink Floyd - Delicate Sound of Thunder - movie DVD cover picture
Superb Pink Floyd concert video

Pink Floyd's second concert video entitled Delicate Sound of Thunder was released in June of 1989(the satellite album was released in November of 1988). The album(and video) was recorded and filmed over five nights at the Nassau Coliseum in New York in August of 1988(the end of the regular Momentary Lapse tour '87-'88 and directed by video director Wayne Isham(Bon Jovi, Rolling Stones, Queensryche, etc.). The band would tour Europe again in 1989/90 in support of Delicate Sound with the tour called Another Lapse). The band first attempted to record a live album and video in November of 1987 in Atlanta but the band were not up to par. Subsequently, they tried again in the summer of 1988. As a result, a great live album and video. The album has superb live versions of On The Turning Away and One of These Days. The fans' much reviled track The Dogs of War is superior to its studio counterpart with Nick Mason playing drums this time and Rick Wright playing on keyboards like he did in the old days(the two are the only two original Floyd members who did every tour) and of course David Gilmour's vocals and superb guitar work. The film on this track is breath taking with the German Shepard dogs running with the yellow eyes as if they were possessed by Satan himself. Other standouts are Wish You Were Here and Learning To Fly. Some tracks are slightly edited like Shine on You Crazy Diamond and Comfortably Numb. The video features material not on the album like Signs Of Life, On the Run, a spellbinding The Great Gig in the Sky and of course the superb One Slip. Money was available on the US video version of Delicate Sound but not the UK edition. This video is unfortunately now out-of-print. The video did well for a live concert video as it went Multi-Platinum and is a great document of Floyd's reunion tour. I first got this video in January of 1993 and went through two copies and am holding on to them until this DVD is released. Highly recommended!

Cowboy Bebop Complete Sessions Collection (Amazon.com Exclusive) - movie DVD cover picture
Greatest Anime Ever

Cowboy Bebop is easily the most holy of holy animes. The storyline the characters...everything is absolutely perfect. The show itself is flawless. Spike Spiegel is a frickin hero, he knows what to do in any situation. He laughs in the face of danger and is always able to crack a joke no matter what his predicament is. Faye Valentine is a hard core woman. She gets herself into all kinds of trouble and the crew aboard the spaceship Bebop has to save her. Jet Black is the main brawn in the operation he is the one who flies the Bebop. Edd and Ein are 2 mismatch characters that go perfectly together. The plot is actually a very sad and tragic story, being only 26 episodes the show could not get stale. The story focuses around Spike trying to find his lost love, Julia and at the same time his old partner now nemesis, Vicious. At the final episode Julia dies, then Spike kills Vicious, but as he shot Vicious, Vicious' sword struck a fatal blow across the chest on Spike. Then Spike goes out like a true hero. This is the greatest television series of all time and it is something you should not miss out on.

Cast Away (Widescreen Single Disc Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
Tom Hanks is the leading actor in cinema today...here's why

I have been amazed (as us all) to see the absolute incredible evolution in the career of Tom Hanks. No one would have guessed that this "Bosom Buddies" actor would ever turn out to be the greatest actor of our times. Sure, Tom drifted once-and-a-while to scripts that should be better left unmentioned. But Tom has evolved.
His movies are successful because we are comfortable with Tom in front of our eyes. He is one of those actors that does not become type-cast or predictable. He IS the part he plays...and we believe him and want him to be that character. When he played Jim Lovell in Apollo 13, he was Jim Lovell. Get my point? We welcome Tom into our homes and into our lives because he has gives us an enormous gift every time he does another movie.
And in Cast Away, he surpasses our already high expectations with an outstanding and demanding performance. I have watched this movie numerous times, and each time gives me a warm and pleasant feeling. Bravo, Tom, for making our lives richer through your superb acting and superb selection of the films you make.

I'm not an M. Night Shyamalan fan

I'm not a big fan of M. Night Shyamalan's work, but I have to admit that I really liked this movie. I didn't think I was going to like it going into the theater and I actually didn't think I was going to like it half way through the movie, but I thought it was great.

This movie is a love story above everything else, but I also believe that it's a metaphor of the way our (and other people's) government/ruling-class controls our information and the way we think through complex media control and subtle indoctrination to preserve their way of life and America's interests. I think the monsters represent the way our government uses the fear of terrorism/communism/whatever to keep us in line. I think that "The Village" is just a microcosm of the United States. In the movie, they speak different than the people they seceded from... just like we speak different than the British... makes you think, huh?

It's interesting to try and figure out what M. Night Shyamalan is trying to say about our system and the people who are a part of it.

The directing and cinematography were awesome. It's a story about the power of love and a strong political commentary.
