Good As It Gets

Take a Woody Allen movie where Woody politely stays BEHIND the camera. Add a perfectly cast Mia Farrow as a waif-like dreamer of a girl, living in the grinding poverty of the 1930's Depression and married to an blustering, brutal man. Top it off with a brilliant dual performance by Jeff Daniels who is a cinematic film hero who steps out of the screen and the actor who plays this hooky playing fictional character.
Cecilia (Mia Farrow) works as a waitress (on the verge of being fired). Her life is grim, living in a tenement with her no-account husband (Danny Aiello). Her one pleasure is the movies that she attends daily. Her favorite is "The Purple Rose of Cairo," and the explorer character "Tom Baxter" brings radiance to her eyes that never leave him. After multiple viewings, one day "Tom" falters in his lines, seems distracted, then steps out of the film and joins Cecilia in the audience. The cast and audience are suitably stunned; the cast enjoining him to get back on the screen so they can finish the movie, and the audience grumbling they didn't pay good money to watch the cast arguing among themselves. "Tom" is resolute, and out they walk, he in his pith helmet and explorer togs, Cecilia radiant. The movie industry is appalled worried about litigation and insurrection if characters start walking off the screen. Gil Shepard, the actor who played"Tom" is sent to the scene to talk "Tom" into getting back onscreen where he belongs. "Tom" clearly is innocent of what the "real" (as opposed to "reel") world is about. He is in love with Cecilia and she allows that he "is the perfect man. Of course, he's fictional." Real life "Gil," Tom, and Cecilia meet. The ending is surprisingly intense.
Jeff Daniels is dazzling as Gil/Tom. He handles both roles to perfection. The interaction among Daniels, Farrow, and Aiello is flawless. Much as I wanted to thoroughly despise Aiello as the low-life husband, he managed to make me laugh and feel sorry for him with his bravado performance. All the jokes and humor work in "The Purple Rose of Cairo," which isn't the case in many Allen movies. I believe this is Woody Allen's valentine to his beloved movies. It couldn't be better. Even if you are a dedicated Allenophobe, see this movie. You won't be disappointed.-sweetmolly-Amazon Reviewer

Dennis Weaver's masterly portrayal of a pacifistic ninny pushed beyond his endurance is a classic! Mr Weaver blends reality and craft to bring just the right touch of nerdiness to his performance. Don't miss his class "Cheese sandwich" scene in the diner. Mr Spielberg also shows us what he can do with no budget. He coaxes the grandest performances from the non-human actors: The menacing juggernaut of a truck and the touching nice-guy Dodge Dart.

Great, Great, Great

Why is everyone so hung up on Madonna-bashing? I thought the movie was a great ride. Sure, there are some weak points, but if you just watch it for what it is, it's an enjoyable movie.

The movie that redefined the horror comedy

When I was a kid, my older brother and his friends used to talk about this movie all the time. Being too young to see it I was still facinated by their enthusiastic descriptions of some of the scenes. When I eventally did watch it, while I as still a wee lad, I think it was a turning point for both me and the horror genre altogether. For if it weren't for this movie, I wouldn't be making horror movies myself. This film, without a doubt, is the only movie in my book to successfully blend comedy with horror. The makeup fx, while now slightly dated and not on par with Rob Bottin's fx in The Thing, are without a doubt amazing and I'm so happy that this movie has got a re-release with a behind the scenes making of featurette so now all can see how they brought the best werewolf in cinema history to the silver screen.
If you haven't seen it, buy it - it's howl from beginning to end!

Titus Season 1 & 2 - movie DVD cover picture

Thank goodness the powers-that-be are releasing this great TV show onto DVD. Titus was the anti-thesis of American comedy and family values. And yet, there was always a lesson to be learned albeit through dysfunction to such an extreme that it must have scared people that they could find themselves laughing at it.

Christopher Titus writing was superb and the casting of Stacy Keach should go down in infamy as the "best" TV dad in the history of sitcoms.

This show was cancelled before it ever had a chance to catch on. Hopefully through DVD release a larger audience can be reached who will appreciate some of the darkest humor to ever grace a television screen.

Fuqua is a director to watch

Now I am really looking forward to seeing "King Arthur" after watching this film; which Fuqua is directing for Jerry Bruckheimer. This is one of the best war films I have seen in quite sometime. Much better than Black Hawk Down. You care about the characters in this film. Willis gives one of his best performances as does the rest of the impressive cast. The cinematography and score are thrilling and engaging. Antoine Fuqua (Training Day) has now proved himself to be one of the best young director's working in film today.

A triumph!!

I went to this movie (thankfully) without expecting anything..I had heard rave reviews but I was expecting something more artsy. So there was nothing to prepare me for what I saw and I very faithfully was blown away along with the rest of the audience in the theatre. Frankly the story sounded a bit corny when I read about it and trying to relate it now would be doing an injustice to the film. Audrey Tatou's performance as Amelie deserves accolades and more! The cinematography was mindblowing. The direction was superb and left me wondering at his imagination. Every little scene, every little nuance was so meaningful and so well thought out. The humor depicted in the film was very refreshingly different from the normal below-the-belt stuff of Hollywood and there was a wide smile on my face when I wasn't in splits. Such a movie hits you only once in a lifetime. So those of you who haven't seen it yet, what are you waiting for?
