When Worlds Collide - movie DVD cover picture
Noah's Ark, 50s Style!

WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE is basically the story of Noah and the ark updated. A scientist discovers that earth is doomed, right in the path of an approaching planet and it's star! Of course, no one will listen and the world's governments simply laugh it off. So, private investors come to the rescue, giving millions of their own dollars to construct a spaceship capable of holding 40 people, livestock, etc. The problem is in choosing (by lottery) just who the lucky / blessed 40 folks will be. They will be the only remnant of humanity, attempting to start over on the planet Zyra (the very planet that will cause the first wave of earth's destruction)! Who should go? Who should stay? WWC poses some fairly astute moral dilemmas. I mean, why is the rich, bitter, and misanthropic industrialist getting on board just because he wants to save his own skin? This problem is addressed in a rather biting way! Though dated, I found the FX enjoyable, remembering when this was made. George Pal had his high points (War Of The Worlds, The Time Machine) and I consider WWC to be one of them. Barbara Rush (It Came From Outer Space) is in it for goodness sake! That's enough for me right there! Highly recommended...

Rare pleasure

A rare convergence of exceptional talents created this film masterpiece. An even rarer convergence of common sense and good taste awarded this film the Academy Award for best film in 1981 rightly relegating the spurious historical epic REDS to deserved oblivion. And what a cast! Past and future theatre greats came together to give Hugh Hudson what might prove to be his one dip in the high tide of glory.

Baby Magic!

We were introduced to this video when our daughter Grace was seven months old. I regret not having exposed her earlier, since she loved it right from the start. She is now 17 months old and we have gotten her the entire Baby Einstein collection. Amazingly she loves them all and has learned enthusiastically from all the videos. It is obvious to us that babies understand so much more than we can imagine and these videos are such a lovely introduction to learning.

This Movie Sucks!!! And It Is Not A "Cult Classsic!!!"

When this waste of celluloid was first made it could not even find a distributor willing to show this piece of junk. For you younger people reading this celluloid is the stuff they used to make movies with. Enough of my History Lesson. This movie proves the Old Adage that movies, just like ageing prostitutes, drunks, politicians and buildings all become respectable with age. This movie is only reedemed by the presence of Tim Curry who I hope got paid a lot of money to star in this turkey of a movie.

This is a movie you must see. It is really sad but it still is really good. i can relate to the daughter really well because we are about the same age. i placed myself in her position. the movie is about how the kids learn to accept their mother's death, their parent's divorce, and their new mother. out of 5 stars, this is worth 6.

I wish he were still with us.

"The Pink Panther Strikes Again" is slapstick comedy at its best. Peter Sellers truly knew how to do it. Getting up off of a bench knocking archrival Dreyfus into the water (and doing it countless times), tears his pants in the door, trying to get to a drawbridge to a castle but keeps falling in the water, and a clever disguise with a prop that sends Dreyfus hysterical! NEat special effects especially when Dreyfus' ray-gun backfires and him and his castles disappear. The final sequence is incredibly silly, the bedroom sequence with Tom Jones singing "Come To Me".Great, insane fun!

Wonderful Screenplay

It's been said that half the science fiction written since the 1950s was based on "Forbidden Planet" and 3/4 of Star Trek. Watch this film and you'll have to agree.

Peppy and Bright

One of these days director Richard Thorpe will get the kind of sustained critical attention given routinely to his contemporaries, Howard Hawks and John Ford. Thorpe directed and wrote literally scores of silent westerns, moved on to a dozen saucy pre-Code sex comedies, and then moved into a comfortable berth as one of the top MGM directors. He made everything from NIGHT MUST FALL to THE GREAT CARUSO to IVANHOE. Even Burt Lancaster's first Western was directed by this old pro-VENGEANCE VALLEY, in 1951. At the same time, he was adept at romance and musical comedy. Elvis made a couple of his best pictures in tandem with Thorpe-JAILHOUSE ROCK and FUN IN ACAPULCO,

The "Thorpedo," as the fans called him, was nearly 70 when Universal assigned him to work on THAT FUNNY FEELING, with their endearing screen team, talented Bobby Darin and ditsy Sandra Dee (here exceedingly neurotic and cute, like a mod version of Margaret Sullavan). Now on DVD, THAT FUNNY FEELING shows Thorpe at his best, the assured pacing, the canny use of talented backup players-in this case, Donald O'Connor and Nita Talbot most prominently, and the robust sense of color that never failed him. Dee and Darin have never been better, and the whole movie has the freshness of a Lubitsch cocktail. Hail to Richard Thorpe! When the cinema lost him, it lost one of the greats.

A great movie. One of the Marx Brothers best. Many funny scenes. The brothers are at college. The scene with Groucho as the teacher and Harpo and Chico as students is great. This may be Harpo's best movie. "SWORDFISH"
