No Controversy, Just Terrific Television

I never saw "Taxi" until Nick@Nite was showing them and I fell in love with it. I managed to get most of them on VHS but all the episodes were out of order and the tapes took up so much room. I want them to release all the other episodes too so I can finally junk these worn out tapes! The best part of these discs is being able to see scenes that I never saw before. If you ask me, these have to be the full shows because the versions that Nick was rerunning didn't have so many lines and moments that I now get to see. And I don't know which tape I have it on, but there is probably an episode from later on where Jim does something notable with a hat but it can't be the one where he joins the garage because that doesn't make any sense. Oh, and I watched the episode again and the reason the audience laughs is because of the punchline he delivers as he puts the hat on. When he crashes the cab with Alex in the back seat I still LOL! And don't get me started on that drivers ed test routine. Whoever thought that up is a genius!!

Come on, guys, get seasons three to five out soon!!! I'm dying to see the episodes where Simka marries Latka and then goes crazy with PMS ("PEEL ME LIKE A GRAPE!").

Nicely done!

I love this movie. But why is it in the kid's movie section? The humor in it is not really for kids.

It's refreshing to have the Cinderella story told from the prince's point of view. Handsome, young Richard Chamberlain in the lead certainly didn't hurt. Is it me or do anyone of you viewers see how the young Gemma Craven resembles Alicia Silverstone?

Another thing that's great about this movie is the music, especially the lyrics. Sherman brothers were funny as hell to pen the lyrics.

Over all, the music, cast, production design all went tightly with the story line.

Make sure you listen to the director's commentary. He's done a good job commenting on his film and you can feel the commitment and passion he brought to directing this movie.

Saved by the bell rules!

There is suppose to be a show where Slater arrives at Bayside for the first time. Somehow I think NBC aired it during the Third Season. If the DVD starts with AC as part of the gang then the storyline is out of order. The order of DVD sets should always be linear- and if the networks got it wrong then you should not want the original airdates. Therefore I must give the set 3 stars. Otherwise I would have kept it and not sold it. SBTB is an American Classic! You'll just have to wait for the second set and piece the correct order together or just punish Lion's Gate for screwing up by not buying it.

Believe the hype

"Seven Samurai" is one of those movies your hear referred to constantly by full-time film afficionados. Those are the kinds of movies I'm usually leery of. Finally I broke down and rented "Seven Samurai," and found it to be well worth the praise-indeed, worthy of its position as one of the all-time great movies. The story is a rousing one, the cinematography instantly affecting. I liked the dvd so much I purchased a copy. I appreciate Criterion's decision to have commentary from a full-fledged Japanese film fan. He knows the material inside out and provides a wealth of small details, as well as appreciative remarks that no director would feel comfortable making. Highly recommended.

Brother Cadfael - Leper of St. Giles - movie DVD cover picture
Retribution and romance....

Ellis Peters wrote 20 books about her hero Brother Cadfael. THE LEPER OF ST GILES is an early book in her series, and the DVD film is a faithful account of her story, first broadcast on PBS Mystery series. Sir Derek Jacobi plays Cadfael, and a host of other fine British actors fill the remaining roles. The Cadfael films were shot in Eastern Europe, and early episodes are the best because Peters served as a technical consultant (she died before the filming was completed).
Cadfael's exploits are generally set in the tumultuous years 1130-1150 when the Empress Maud and her cousin Stephen were fighting for the English throne. However, in THE LEPER OF ST GILES, the key to a current mystery lies in the period some 40 years before when Cadfael and other young men took up the cross for Christ as participants in the the First Crusade. In this book/film we learn more about those times and how Cadfael came to his current vocation.
St Giles is a way station outside Shrewsbury where the Benedictine monks of the local abby minister to the physical and spiritual needs of the Lepers. In the Middle Ages, people were terrified of Leperosy, a disease that showed up in Europe following the First Crusade to the Holy Land. Because the disease was so contagious and horrible, lepers were not allowed to enter settlements but confined to way stations maintained by the church. Moreover, lepers were ordered to wear little bells or carry them and ring them when the approached others.
One day, an old leper shows up at the Leper Hospital of St Giles. He is tall and at one time was very well built, tho now the ravages of the disease have diminished him. At the same time as his arrival at St Giles, a young girl is escorted to Shrewsbury Abby by her kinfolk for her wedding--to an older man not of her choosing. The young man she would prefer to marry is not well enough situated for her kinsfolk, who want her to join their (her) lands with the bridegroom's lands which lie adjacent to their own. As was the case in many of these arranged marriages, the bottom line overshadows feelings.
The day of the wedding the bridegroom is discovered dead. He had been out riding in the early moring hours and apparently his horse stumbled and he was thrown and his neck broken--or was he. Of course, Cadfael discovers evidence of foul play, but who would want the man dead? Immediate suspicion falls on the young affinanced woman's illicit lover. Did he do it? If not, only Cadfael can unravel the mystery and discover many things including the identity of the mysterious leper of St. Giles.

Awesome

This movie kicked arse! I watched it at 3:00 in the morning, so it was even funnier in my confused state of mind. Not to mention that the brunette in the biodome was pretty hot, if lacking a little bit in the chest. I'm proud to say that I am the 69th reviewer of this movie.

Paradise is in the wind

Brilliant deapan humor, slow timely dialog, low budget distinct look, raw though beautiful black and white production and stunning subtle performances by a small well placed cast. When Willie's (Lurie) Hungarian cousin Eva (Balint) comes to stay with him for a few weeks before retreating to Cleveland to stay with her Aunt, we experience, from a fly on the wall perspective, the boring lives of the two unfold. After Willie grows fond of her, he tracks her down in Cleveland along with his buddy Eddie (Edson) in search for something more in their dull existence. The three decide to voyage to Florida to escape the cold and dark environment, only to find similar dullness only in sunnier shades. Brilliant deapan originality and haunting story of three people looking for "Paradise" or any place that doesn't resemble hell. This is the greatest Indie flick ever made.. simple and honest the film's low budget production looks better than most. This one will stay with you and force you to look at our world differently from here on.

Cape Fear - movie DVD cover picture
This one is Scary!

Gregory Peck stars as a Southern lawyer stalked by ex-con Robert Mitchum. It seems Peck withheld evidence in Mitchum's trial, and by doing so, helped send him to prison. Now Mitchum's out and wants to get even by hurting Peck's wife and daughter. The family hides in a house boat in Cape Fear, but Mitchum finds them..! Robert Mitchum is so creepy and slimy in this film you'll be breathless watching him terrorize wife Polly Bergen and daughter Lori Martin. Every ounce of him seethes with hatred and viciousness. He is terrifying to behold. This version of the film is much better than the remake, due to Mitchum's bravura performance and the overall dignity of the family. If you like chilling movies, you'll love Cape Fear.
