Nightmare On Elm Street Collection

Movies: Nightmare on Elm Street really was the launching pad for New Line Cinema. Without Freddy, where would they be? After the runaway success of the original Nightmare On Elm Street film, a sequel was pretty much guarenteed. But what followed instead were SIX very popular sequels. Some ranging from great (Dream Warriors, New Nightmare) to somewhere in-between (The Dream Master, The Dream Child) to not so good (Freddy's Revenge, Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare.) Freddy Kruegar started off as truly frightening in Nightmare On Elm Street. Things took a slightly homoerotic turn in Nightmare On Elm Street 2: Freddy's Revenge. Freddy did get back on track with Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. Freddy did turn slightly funnier, and more MTV-ish with Nightmare On Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. Then, Freddy did take a big fall with Nightmare On Elm Street 5: The Dream Child. But he went way over the top with Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare. Wes Craven successfully made Freddy scary again in Wes Craven's New Nightmare. The evolution that the series took was really interesting to watch, and quite enjoyable at times. While not completely even, the series is pretty fun, nonetheless.
Nightare On Elm Street: 5/5
Freddy's Revenge: 3/5
Dream Warriors: 5/5
The Dream Master: 4/5
The Dream Child: 3.5/5
Freddy's Dead: 2.5/5
New Nightmare: 5/5
Extras: The boxed set has an entire eighth disc devoted to the special features. There are really too many to list. First, there's a "Welcome To Primetime" featurette, which goes into the making of the first film. Then, you can go into the Labyrinth, which is a really long and complicated maze to find the extras. Or, you can go to the index to see most of, but not all the extras. All in all, a feature packed disc loaded with special features. 6/5
Overall: A great boxed set. Not only do you get all of the movies, you gety an entire disc loaded with features to boot. Go, get this!

I Hate to Exercise, I Love to Tap

This is a delightful, easy to follow, instructional video featuring three routines. Bonnie takes you through some beginning steps and builds so you learn a waltz clog routine, soft shoe routine and time-step routine. She gives you all the tools you need to learn. The tape is geared to take you through each routine at a comfortable pace with enough repititions to remember and suggests you rewind and review so you can learn at your own pace. Good, solid traditional routines -- not too difficult.

Great fun, with a lot of laughs!

This movie is a riot! If I watch a comedy, and that's what this is, and I fall down laughing, then it gets a 5! This movie is very entertaining, with lots of Jackie Chan action. This is a movie where the humor and action are what count, not some sophisticated, complex plot. If you like Jackie Chan style action and fun, you will enjoy this movie, most assuredly! The short time Jason Isaacs spends as the super agent, while a major departure from his best known role as Lucius Malfoy, is really entertaining. And as says in their review, the faux James Brown scene is a show stopper. I recommend this movie to all Jackie Chan fans and all those who enjoy the martial arts humor he has make popular. This movie does deserve a 5!

Beatifully acted and performed

I am 30 years old and I just viewed this movie on tv for the first time. I was hesitant to watch it as it was a black and white movie, ( not my preference ). The more I watched the more I liked. I enjoyed this movie so much, I searched for the title and now will own it very shortly.

Greatest WrestleMania ever?

Some people think that this is the greatest show the Wwe has ever put on, but I can't agree. Now, it is one of my favorites, most definately, but saying it's the greatest WrestleMania ever is pushing it. See, comparing this to WrestleMania 3 is like comparing regular water to filtered water, it's close, but it's not the same.

Intercontinental Championship Match
-------------------------------------- -----
<br />William Regal vs. Chris Jericho: It was a good match, though it was very short. If they were to extend the length of the match, it would have been much, much better. Anyways, they both pulled off some nice moves and did a good job in the ring. 8/10

6 Man Tag Team Match
-------------------------------------- -----
<br />APA and Tazz vs. Right to Censor: Okay, i'll put it in simple terms, it sucked. Tazz wasn't doing good in the ring and it was just short. It sucked. 3/10

Hardcore Championship Match
-------------------------------------- -----
<br />Raven vs. Big Show vs. Kane: I didn't expect to much out of this match but a bunch of chokeslams, but I was wrong, big time. This match was not only hilarious, but it was brutal. This match was not only good for a laugh, but it was actually a great match. 8/10

European Championship Match
-------------------------------------- -----
<br />Test vs. Eddie Guerrero: Solid match, a few big moves, a few small moves here and there. Test just doesn't really get my attention, and Eddie Guerrero is one of the best, so it wasn't a really good match to begin with. 5/10

Kurt Angle vs. Chris Benoit: I was blown away by this match. One of the best WrestleMania matches ever, by far. Both of these guys have a great wrestling background, and it shows in this match. 10/10

Womens Championship Match
-------------------------------------- -----
<br />Ivory vs. Chyna: This one blew, big time, even worse than the 6 man tag match. 2/10

Street Fight
-------------------------------------- -----
<br />Shane McMahon vs. Vince McMahon with Mick Foley as Guest Referee:
I really don't know what to say about this match. Vince took some bumps, Shane took some bumps, so it was back and forth. Don't get me wrong, it was a good match, and they both did good jobs, so it was good. 9/10

-------------------------------------- -----
<br />Dudley Boyz vs. Edge and Christian vs. Hardy Boyz: What a match. It was a very high flying, risk taking match, and these guys talent showed. Jeff Hardy and Edge pulled off some sweet moves, like the Swanton bomb from that tall ladder and that sweet spear from the ladder. Great match. 10/10

Gimmick Battle Royal
-------------------------------------- -----
<br />Well, I enjoyed it. 7/10

Triple H vs. Undertaker: Whoa! This match was a wild one, and an unintentional street fight. Best match of the night? By far. 10/10

Wwe Championship Match
-------------------------------------- -----
<br />The Rock vs. "Stone Cold" Steve Austin: After seeing WrestleMania 15, I knew this would be a good one. It was made into a "street fight" at the last minute, and that made it even better. It was a great match, but the shocker comes at the end of the match, and it still shocks me every time I see it. 10/10

What an event. All the wrestlers did great jobs in, and out, of the ring, and made this one of the best ever, though not as good as WrestleMania 3. Altogether, I give it a 9.5/10

Frank Herbert's Children of Dune (TV Miniseries) - movie DVD cover picture
Daring to say it's better than the books

Unlike most fans of Dune, I read the books after watching both miniseries and the 1984 film. Without trying to make a review of every one of these, I will say that the books are an excellent study in philosophy, politics and ecology, with many ingenuous ideas presented, and a very unique feel to them in a world of clunky science fiction full of ray guns and blue-skinned aliens. With this in mind I highly reccommend them, but as far as the story goes, the presentation falls flat. Oh, there's an excellent story unfolding, but many of the key dramatic moments are written almost as an afterthought (remember when Paul's first son died? Or how about when the conspirators of Dune Messiah were killed? These things seem kind of important, and yet in the books they get about a paragraph of mention each). The David Lynch film failed because it took its cue from this aspect of the books, but was unable to truly deliver the philosophical deepness of the books. As such, the Lynch film is better watched with the mute button on--visually impressive for its time, but hollow both thematically and emotionally.

The one thing I will say that both of the miniseries lacked (the first more than the second) was the intellectual depth of the books, but it would have been incredibly difficult to bring this out on the medium of film anyways. Where the miniseries succeed is in the fact that while the books read like a textbook with a story wrapped around it to keep it interesting (which Herbert does very well), the series have just plain excellent story presentation.

No matter what purists say, Children of Dune makes the story and characters infinitely more accessible with the changes that it made, and there were many changes. Leto and Ghanima being teenagers was a good choice--they are still young enough to be remarkable with the wisdom they have, and old enough to be able to empathise with their characters and conflicts better. The change in the nature of Leto's transformation, while admittedly not suitably explained, was a good choice, again because he still looks mostly human, and thus we may empathise more. Irulan was a character that I enjoyed in both of the miniseries, and I am very glad she was given greater treatment, because in the books she is so insignificant that I wonder why Herbert even gave her dialogue. Her unrequited love for Paul was painfully felt almost from the first appearance of her character in Children. Alia's final scene, as well, was ever so much more powerful than in the book--with an amazing added touch by referencing a poingnant moment from the first miniseries (watch them back to back, and pay attention).

There are certain things that the miniseries could never have portrayed faithfully from the books, and these happen to be the things that I find most enjoyable about the books, even though I was frustrated with the conclusion Leto came to at the end of the text--it seemed like such a monumental mistake to me, and I hope that it is cleared up in God-Emperor, which I haven't yet read. That being said, instead of trying in vain to be faithful to books that are lacking in story presentation where they are amazing in every other respect, the miniseries changed and added the right elements to actually make the story enjoyable on screen. I am glad I read the books, but I look forward more to enjoying the miniseries over and over again.

The stars to rate this video need to start at 10!

I have seen the movie and read the book more than once. Talk about staying power! This book has it and more. Good and Evil, power and glory, love and hate, GOD and satan, you name it this movie covers it. From the beginning of the movie, the crow (Randy Flagg) is seen as evil and there is no "poor little demon wasn't loved as a child" as the movie goes along. There is the Good guys and there is the bad guys, no confusion here! Thanks Stephen King. "You done good."

How could Fox possibly have cancelled this?

I picked up these DVD's based on a friend's recommendation. I was reluctant at first because I knew this show was cancelled after only a brief run and I assumed that meant it wasn't very good. I am now simply stunned at both the quality of this show and Fox's stupidity. This show has everything an intelligent science-fiction fan wants- great writing, great acting, interesting situations and sympathetic characters. The ensemble nature of the cast is outstanding. The different characters are extremely well-defined, unlike other shows such as Voyager. The whole "Wild West in Space" theme sounds hokey but really works, due to the talent involved. And the music is both memorable and effective.

I cannot recommend this set highly enough. It's such a shame it's so small. I understand there is a movie version of Firefly in the works and I hope it lives up to the series. Better still, I hope it inspires another network to bring the cast back together for a new series.

Buy this.
