A Testament to Courage

This is a riveting soldiers in combat drama that works as a human drama also. Director Edward Zwick has made something special here as what could have been a routine story, takes on depth and a sense of honor and history as the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the first female officer killed in combat turns into a marshy quicksand of lies and deception about the events leading to her death.

Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Serling (Denzel Washington) is assigned the task of signing off on the details so Captain Karen Walden (Meg Ryan) can be given the Medal of Honor for her sacrifice. But as Serling begins to talk to the crew of soldiers who went down with Walden in the Medivac helicopter over Kuwait, he becomes unsure whether or not she deserves it. It is not any kind of preconceptions about women in combat that prompts his misgivings but his conversations with those involved.

Michael Moriarty gives a fine performance as Serling's superior and old friend Brigadier General Hershberg. The President wants to give Walden this honor and the pressure is great on Serling to hurry up and sign off on the investigation. Ilario (Matt Damon) was the closest to Walden personally and he seems just a little to scared of the investigation to Serling. Lou Diamond Phillips gives the performance of his career as the hard edged Sgt. Monfriez, a military lifer with a chip on his shoulder who thinks Serling is there to whitewash what happened, so refuses to tell him anything.

Denzel Washington gives another great performance as the flawed Lieutenant Colonel Serling, whose attempt to get at the truth may cost him his career. Scott Glenn has a nice turn in this quietly powerful drama as a reporter who smells a big story. This film is about honor and integrity and human weakness. The flashback scenes are riveting as each soldier tells his version of events. When Serling finally uncovers the truth, which is quite different from the offical version, it still remains a story of courage under fire.

Though Denzel gets most of the screen time, Meg Ryan not only holds her own but equals him. Her moments on screen paint a portrait of a very real person who served her country bravely and with honor. This film slowly draws you in until you are glued to the screen, waiting for the truth to come out. It is a testament to honor and sacrifice by our military, whatever the circumstances.

If you don't own this film you'll want to pick it up soon. It's one you'll watch more than once.

American Truth

I went through a situation in my life that was very similar to what Lester was faced with. Instead of just keeping his mouth shut like everyone else, he went unconventional. Quitting his job and lusting after a teenager while smoking pot were his way of saying "F*** You" to those who would try to keep him trapped in their expectations of what they wanted him to be. I love this film because so many people in America are trapped in mundane lives like he was at the beginning of the movie. Everyone has to live in the same kind of neighborhood, send their kids to the same school and soccer fields, go out to eat every Friday, and pretend like this makes them happy. That's why we have the highest divorce rate in the world. Sure, he was killed in the end, but he was looking back at a time when his life was so simple. Look closer at your own life. Look closer at this movie.

Awesome movie! Dunst rules!

Kirsten Dunst delivers a fantastic performance in this movie. It is an absolutely hilarious movie that keeps your interests at all times. It is about a group of students at an all girls school that want to be heard. Some of the students will do anything to get what they want. I would recommend this comedy to everyone!

To all the purists who cry that this movie shouldn't have been made. Catch up, already. It's 2004 - time for another look at a (supposed) "classic". If you haven't figured it out, I was never much of a fan of the original, unless I needed a good laugh. What was scary about it? By the end of the original, I was mad Leatherface didn't kill ALL the dorky teens. About the only redeeming quality it had was being different for it's time, and times DO change (YEAH!!)
Better acting, better story (which is almost enough to take it out of the remake catagory) and the first movie to make me jump since I was 10. After leaving the theater, THIS one had me and my girlfriend talking for days (but then she's always been a bigger fan or the original than I'll ever be....she still thinks this one kicked butt)
It's really almost unfair to compare it to the original, it's NOT the same movie. It's BETTER.

Commandeer--It's a nautical term

Ahoy there, me hearties! I've got to say, this movie is (so far) the best movie of the year (we'll see how ROTK fares--hopefully well!). Johnny Depp gave a stellar performance as, who else, Captain Jack Sparrow (what a cool name). I don't know exactly what it is about him, but his overall demeanor throughout the movie put me in a rather good mood, and had me laughing to the end. Anyone who hasn't seen it (what are you waiting for?) needs to go. NOW! Oh, and *waste* your time by watching 'till the end of the credits. You'll thank me. :)

Why are Americans deprived?

Finally! Friends on DVD?? Yes and No. in America yes, everywhere else, No. The only difference being that everywhere else has the full compilations and not just 'Best of..'
Save your money buy going to a British DVD retailer such as and buy all 6 series of Friends on DVD without missing episodes. Or simply wait and hope they don't screw you over and eventually realise them in the US.

Extremely underated.

I don't know why everyone dislikes this move.
Acting - Their is some good acting... Tom Cruise is not at the very top of his game but it is good.
Directing - John Woo directed this movie excellently.
Action - Very cool action scenes including puching, kicking, and shoot outs.
Music - Excellent music from Metallica, Limp Bizkit and more.
John Woo has managed to make a PG-13 movie with EXCELLENT action, great music, A good story, and is done very well. What more could you ask for. I think this movie deserves 5 starz and most people will like it.
