Neat Exercise in Hitchcock Neo Realism

Hitchcock wanted Vera Miles to be Madeleine in Vertigo. She's very beautiful in this movie. Her acting is superb. I remember seeing this movie when I was around 15 and I was actually scared for her character when she starts losing her mind in the middle of the story.
Some people on here were dismissive of the scenes where she is losing her mind, but I generally found them heartbreaking.
I also found the Catholic symbolism to be very effective.

Go to Lunch!!

An excellently acted film with a great script. Each actor rubs on you the wrong way, which just draws you in more to see it unfold. Kevin Spacey and Jack Lemmon are rarely better than this. No bells and whistles, just a remarkable ensemble playing out a terrifically written piece.

Sad Spellbinder, A Beautiful Film!

The deglamorization of the western has never been made so beautifully. One of the sadest films ever made. Altman has basically no compassion for his characters, that is the reason we care so much about them. Warren Beatty gives probably his best performance as the gambler McCabe who transforms a small mining town into a busy boomtown. Julie Christie is also excellent as the business wise hooker that brings 'high class girls' to the town. What make this one unique are the beautiful landscapes that are expertly captured by the masterful cinematography, the haunting and unforgettable Leonard Cohen songs, and powerhouse direction by Altman who brings us richly textured characters that provide a breathtaking and unforgettable cinematic experience. The film also features one of the saddest deaths in Western history, young cocky Keith Carradine is tricked by a ruthless gunslinger and meats his death on that fatal bridge. The last scenes in the snow storm where the antihero McCabe is put into a heroic position is unbearably poignant and unbelievably beautiful. A fascinating film that has a lot to offer. From a scale of 1-10 I give this film a 9!

Ain't nothing better!

I was so glad to get the "Purple Rain" 2 disc anniversary DVD! I'm finally writing a review although I ordered it last August when it came out. Anyhow, I look at this DVD at least once a week, it's like my weekly dose of Prince. The acting isn't all that great, but who cares Prince is looking sexy, and the music is sounding good too! Plus in my eyes Prince can do no wrong. This is a must own for all Prince fans. The part were his dad slaps the ish out of him is real funny!! His performance of "Darling Nikki" is one of my favorites in this movie.

"There are demons here too"

When I first saw the opening shot of the THE HOLE i felt that this would be some old B-Movie but i was amazed to discover what a beautiful peice of art it was. The story is of a mother living in a marshy expanse in the country in a feudal japan under the constant warring shoguns, bitter of the world around for the taking the life of her only son, and even more so of the bearer of news she restrains her daughter-in-law, who she uses as a replacement for her lost son, from pursuing romantic interests with a doctrine free runaway samurai. The mother performs this by guising as a demon and frightening her, but fate takes it's toll as the mother is unable to remove the mask, when the daugther does undernearth the meddling mother's face has been scarred and deformed. This frightens the daughter and causes her to flee.
There is alot of deep meaning to this story that teaches us that by limiting others through envy in the end we shall never benefit from it. Whta I enjoyed about the movie was the ambience. Shots of the long grasses swaying individually in the wind gave a feel as if the story was timeless and uninterrupted. The occurence was isolated and uncomplicated. It was in another world.
There is a lot to learn from this movie, i recommend it to any who seek a moral reasoning or enjoy fantastic psychological horrors.

Keen Eddie - The Complete Series - movie DVD cover picture

I looked forward every week to "Keen Eddie" when it was originally on. Then the network started fiddling with it's time slot, you weren't sure whether it would show up at all and then it went on "hiatus" before they cancelled it outright. It was a disgrace. This show was well written, well acted and had quality production values. In short, it was too good. Maybe if it had been another mindless dribble reality show???!!!! Egad!! The network didn't give it a chance. I am, however, deeply grateful that it is being issued on DVD. Too often a good showed that died an early death disappears without a trace. At least now, when we want to enjoy some wit, we can go back to "Keen Eddie".

Wonderful stories, acting and Christmas Cake, too.

We are great fans of the series and books and particularly love this set. Series Two contains the wonderful "Merry Gentlemen", which features the delightful "Christmas Cake" subplot. Here, Seigreid proves to all, including James, that he is indeed, "an excellent judge of cakes." Running time for the collection is 11 hours and 40 minutes.

Absolutely wonderful, unless you get the CUT version!

This is an absolutely wonderful movie! We watched it as a family and loved it! Dougray Scott is an amazing actor and very believable as the Sultan going mad. I received this video as a present and my 8 year old daughter pointed out that huge parts of it were cut out! The tale of the beggar and sultan, a huge turning point in the story was gone, among other parts! It didn't make sense! And my husband had ordered the extended play version. We finally rented it and saw it in its entirety. If you watch it make sure you get the full is 175 minutes long. The cut version is 139 minutes long and really takes away from the story. The story is nothing without the crucial parts cut out. I highly recommend the extended play version and feel you are really missing out if you don't watch it at least once!
