My most watched film

This is probably one of my most often watched movies. I had skipped this movie for the longest time, thinking it was all about dance. It's not. Those in Theater tell me this is a good look at what goes on behind a big Broadway production. Those who knew Bob Fosse think it's a narcissistic self-serving film. I didn't think so. In my opinion, this is a movie about life, using an unfinished Broadway musical as a metaphor for all the loose ends we leave behind us when we leave this world behind. The movie is quite a roller-coaster ride of funny, sad, dramatic, and light-hearted scenes. Such is life.

a stylistic tour de force withbeautiful content

those that do not appreciate fincher's work here have truely missed out. this film is more than merely a sequel as it is not pap. look at the hardcore machismo of aleins to see what a sequel should not be. yes i enjoy aliens on a gungho level but alien 3 carries over the feel of isolation in the human condition from alien well. this film resonates.

This is a classic! Miles ahead of the Disney version. And a heroine for the ages. This should be in every collector's library. Charming.

This film touched my heart. You'll laugh and cry and laugh some more. It is an open and honest look at growing up lower middle-class, desperately yearning for what you just can't seem to reach. The happy ending makes for dreams come true - maybe it could happen to you!

Stunning; poignant

I have shown this film to my English students after having read Dai Sijie's book, BALZAC AND THE LITTLE CHINESE SEAMSTRESS, because of the portrayal of communism and the effects of the Chinese "cultural revolution". While it at first appears to be loaded with communist propoganda, it becomes apparent by the end of the film that it is an outspoken criticism of Mao and this harsh period of recent Chinese history.
Aside from the political overtones, this is also a masterful study of overcoming loss and adversity that transcends cultural or political boundaries. While my students almost invariably complain about the subtitles at the beginning of the showing, by the end, they have been completely drawn in, and are laughing and crying on cue. If this isn't the true test of a great flick, I don't know what is.
A masterpiece, and one that everyone should see.

From Victory to Success

This film is a beautiful achievement about several issues. First about WW2, the liberation of Paris and the role the Americans played in that event. Some Americans stayed behind and made Paris their ? capital ?, their regular living quarters because of the artistic and easygoing atmosphere of the city, because of what they thought was the permanent celebrating calvacade. No surprise that George fell into the trap, married a young beauty and tried to live up to this city. But he failed. And that is the second achievement. It is a perfect love affair and lifelong love for a woman that he idolizes and yet is unable to equal and even to come close to. He fails his own love and he destroys himself in alcohol to forget his failure. She will die because of it, leaving him and their daughter stranded behind. This is a lesson about achieving anything in life : achievement is a lot harder than striving for it, a lot more haphazard and unguaranteed and when the illusion disappears there is nothing left but frustration and selfdestruction. Then George is torn apart by his love for the departed woman, his wife, and his guilt about it, the jealousy of her sister who grabs the daughter and gets a court order to take care of her, and his desire to recuperate his daughter that finds a similar desire in the girl who wants to live with her daddy. The sister will have to realize that she is chastizing him for her own sister's death, for her own rejection as a possible wife and for her incapability to have a child of her own with her own husband. The end of this film is an absolute tear-shedding scene that should rip the heart of any viewer apart. An amazing Elizabeth Taylor is enhancing the film with the art of one of the best actresses of those times.
