Napoleon Dynamite - movie DVD cover picture
My first thought; "This sucks." In 30 minutes, my favorite!

I did not watch Napoleon Dynamite until it came out on DVD. The first words out of Napoleon's mouth in response to a question about what he's going to do that day were, "I'll do whatever I want to do. Gosh!" Then he proceeds to throw an action figure out the window of the school bus tied to a piece of string. My brothers-in-law who had already seen the movie repeated the line and then all started laughing hysterically when he threw the GI Joe out the window. I said to myself, "This is stupid." My wife muttered to me, "I can't believe we're wasting out time watching this."

Then you start to realize that the stupider the movie got, the funnier everybody who had seen it thought it was. By about twenty minutes in, I started laughing out loud. By the end of the DVD, I started watching it again and found myself repeated the lines. Now, three weeks later, I find that Napoleon Dynamite's "dorky," "geeky," "nerdy," and all the other adjectives that reviewers have used to describe him have become part of my vocabulary. My wife and I regularly find ourselves responding to each other like Pedro, "Yes," "No," "Build her a cake or something," and "Is she hot?" We mutter, "Idiot," "Freakin' idiot," "Lucky," Gosh," "This is pretty much the worst video ever made," "What kind of gun did you use; A freakin' 12 gauge, what do you think?" "I already made like infinity of those," "I see you're drinking 1%. Is that 'cause you think you're fat? Because you're not. You could be drinking whole if you wanted to," "I'm so T.O. [ticked off]", "Sweet," "Yessss..." ""Come get your dinner you fat lard," "My lips hurt real bad," and many others.

This movie is great because it really is a waste of time and is a story about nothing and the producers acknowledge it. There is nothing amazing about the cinematography; the amateurishness of it adds to the humor. This has already become a cult classic for good reason. It's popularity will only grow. This is certainly one of my favorite movies I've ever seen, although I'm not sure I could ever describe to you the reason why.

I'll be with you in a moment, Mr. Peabody...

I'm prejudiced because this is my all-time favorite screwball comedy and it might just be my favorite comedy of all time. To watch the purely gorgeous and suave Cary Grant play an absent-minded professor complete with glasses and dinosaur bone and to see him caught up in this insane adventure with the free-spirited and looney Katherine Hepburn is a treat not to be missed. I've been anticipating the DVD special edition even though expanded editions of classic movies can sometimes be a disappointment. I haven't seen all the features on disk two but can comment on the commentary of Peter Bogdonavich. I enjoyed it because of his obvious love of the movie and I liked that he enjoys watching it as much as I do. He also quotes extensively from an interview he did with Howard Hawks and a lot of what he shares is fairly enlightening. DVD's of classic movies just don't have great commentary because everyone associated with the picture is, well, either dead or greatly infirm so Bogdonavich's is decent and better than most. So to fans of Hepburn, Grant or just brilliant comedy in general, I can heartily recommend this DVD edition. It's such a cliche but they really do not make movies like this anymore.

A stunning DVD

The Criterion Collection manages to do it again and yet again. What a superb transfer of this film noir gem! The movie is superb, period. Need I say something more. But what makes this Criterion treat all the more special is a special digital transfer, an introspection on Carol Reed, multiple trailers, and so many other extras. So much love and care has gone into producing this masterpeiece of a DVD. Just buy this one!

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (Full Screen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
A Christmas Tradition

Since about 1995, christmas at our house jsut wouldnt be the same if we didn't watch "christmas vacation" and "christmas story" about 80 times between the dvd and when its on tv. This movie is perfect. I can't think of a single instance in the film where something could be changed. Teh best of the vacation movies and one of my all time favorite films, Christmas Vacation shows every family that no matter how bad christmas is at your house it could always be worse. If you like Chevy Chase, in his good days, or any of the other vacation movies then buy this now, don't rent, don't think jsut buy. Even if its jsut for the sleddign scene this movie is worth 14 bux. Video quality o nthe dsic is clear and clean, but not mindblowing, it doesn't need to be. the sound is good, voices are clear, music doesn't drown anyone out. ONce again nothing spectacular but it doesnt need to be. Extras are slim pickings, but there wouldnt be much to put on here anyways. Even tho thsi movie will be on tv 3468 times between November 1st and December 25th. It is still worth owning as it can be watched year round. You won't fee lstoopid watching it at other times in the year. Christmas in July, anyone?

Must see movie

If you don't like stories about sin and deliverance, don't watch it. If however you are a human being who has considered his mortal plight and shares in the author's desire to ask the big questions, you Must see this. More than any other movie I've seen in a Looong time, this movie portrays the best and worst in man. I agree with another Reviewer that Coffey is a Christ figure, who dies because of human ignorance. This is not a pretty movie. Kids won't like it, and neither will people who don't want to look deeply into the human heart. It's also long, but essentially so. I totally disagree with a reviewer saying it could have been cut 50 min. Every moment was used effectively to draw us deeper into this strange and wonderful story.
