My favorite Christmas movie

It's true. This is my favorite Christmas movie. Now, be warned, you have to be a fan of smart, talky movies (think of comedies from the thirties and forties). The uniting of Judy Davis, Denis Leary, and Kevin Spacey was inspired, and Christine Baranski and Glynis Johns (one of my favorite stars when I was a kid) provide extra pith to an already pith-laden production.
Now you know, of course, that whenever you get Kevin Spacey and Denis Leary in one film there's going to a lot of talking and a lot of ranting, and the rants are truly delicious, topped off with Spacey's line: "The corpse has the floor!"
Judy Davis more than holds her own with Spacey and Leary, and B. D. Wong is delightful as the overwhelmed psychotherapist. As everyone gets a number in a musical, everyone gets a rant in The Ref, reminding us again of why two people argue: because they're both right.
Give yourself a treat and don't wait for Christmas to watch this one.

How to make the world a better place!

This movie, Pay It Forward, portrays an excellent way for all peoples both young and old to work together to make the world a better place in which to live. Young superstar, Haley Joel Osment gives an outstanding performance in the role of a student,Trevor McKenney, that takes a school assignment, to come up with a way to make the world a better place in which to live, and turns it into a national phenomenon. Keven Spacey as Eugene Simonet, Trevors teacher, and Helen Hunt as Arlene McKenney, Trevors Mother both handled their roles to perfection. This is a movie that is well worth seeing. It will warm your hearts, and leave you in tears, as it did me and my family.

BEST WAR MOVIE EVER!!!!!!!!!

Platoon is after my opinion one of the best movies made about the Vietnam War ever. Oliver Stone let us see the war through the eyes of a young recruit Chris(Sheen), and his struggle to keep his sanity and his morality intact in this brutal war, that threatens to steal both things from him.The movie is not about the big aspects of the war, but more about how the men that fought and died in the jungles of Cambodia and Vietnam felt, the hopelesnes, the despair and the anger. We get a harrowingly look at the "political" struggle between sgt. Elias(Dafoe) and Staff Sgt. Barnes (Berenger) and how the integrity of the platoon is split between the loyalties to the two men and their different aproaches on how to wage war.The movie is shocking and I believe(without having any first hand experience) it gives you a good idea what it is really like being at war. This seems to be a very personal movie for Stone, and the message is still an important one today. Don't miss out on this one.

Clear, rich color. Enhanced sound. Great DVDs

While I agree the individual episode breaks can get a little tedious with the "GI Joe will return after these messages" followed by "Now back to GI Joe" but the color and sound more than make up for it. (Of course I have a powerful home audio system ;)
I just hit the skip button at the end to move on the the next episode. I just wish the Piramyd of Darkness and all the other episodes don't get forgotten on DVD.
I'll buy every one on DVD if available.

The Cult Classic in its truest form...

I don't care what the critics say -- Battlestar Gallactica was NOT Star Wars for the small screen! Gallactica is the embodiment of cult evolution theory (as noted in Charriots of the Gods and the likes) and a good ol' fashioned down-to-earth good vs evil Sci-Fi flic. Ok, I admit that I'm remiss it only features a mono soundtrack, but to be honest, after the first couple minutes, you become so involved in the storyline and (although dated) decent special effects (for their time) that you really don't notice.
This is a MUST-HAVE for any sci-fi buff!

The Mayor of Casterbridge - movie DVD cover picture
A Superb and Riveting Period Drama!

This is a lavish 2003 production by A&E which stays true to the characterization and flow of the story in Hardy's novel. The 5 major characters in this drama will hold your attention throughout as you watch how their lives intertwine and the tragedies unfold.
The story centers on Michael Henchard, Mayor of Casterbridge. Henchard has a dark and shameful secret which occurs nearly 20 years before when he is then just a poor hay trusser. One day, when drunk, he sells his wife (Susan) and baby daughter (Elizabeth-Jane) to a stranger. When he regains sobriety, he tries to locate his family but they have gone abroad with the stranger. Regretting his action, Henchard vows to refrain from alcohol. He turns over a new leaf, settles in a new town (Casterbrige) and later becomes a wealthy tradesman and Mayor. Then one day, Susan returns to him with the now grown Elizabeth-Jane ("EJ", played by Jodie May), who may or may not be Henchard's real daughter. They reconcile and he "remarries" Susan, both agreeing to keep their past relationship a secret. There is relative domestic bliss in Henchard's life until the appearance of 2 other characters.
The first is Donald Farfrae, a young and handsome Scotsman (played by James Purefoy) whom Henchard persuades to assist him in his wheat and corn business. When Farfrae becomes more popular than Henchard and proves to be cleverer in managing the business, Henchard becomes jealous, fires him and begins to treat him as an enemy. The problem is that at that time, Farfrae is already subtly courting EJ. The second character to rock the boat is a beautiful woman, Lucetta (played by Polly Walker) who is Henchard's secret lover before the return of Susan.
The acting by all the actors is phenomenal. Ciaran Hinds is perfect in the title role. James Purefoy, with his dreamy eyes and sensuous lips is a heavensent as the handsome, gentle and well-meaning Farfrae. But the best performance is by Jodie May who plays the sweet, uncomplaining (and quietly suffering) EJ most sensitively. She is my favourite character in the story.
Many scenes will stay in the viewer's mind. To me, these are the 3 most unforgetable scenes:
1) EJ and Farfrae meeting in a barn while it is raining heavily outside. After they have talked a little, Farfrae tells EJ that she has dust(husks?) all over her dress. EJ tries to wipe them off, but Farfrae (in that delicious Scottish accent of his) tells her that "blowing is best" (so as not to ruin the dress). He then gets real close to her to blow the dust away. So gently he does it, blowing around EJ and close to her neck. It is a most romantic scene. Throughout you see that EJ is shy about it but there is an unmistakably delighted expression on her face.
2) When Henchard chooses to reveal a terrible secret to EJ, causing her heart to break. As she cries bitterly, you realize all the more what a wonderful actress Jodie May is. Her tears are genuine, large drops that literally rain down from her eyes.
3) The scene involving Lucetta in her red dress, and two human effigies. I cannot forget how Lucetta collapses to the floor in hearsickness when she catches sight of the effigies from her window, and her anguished cries of "Oh, I shall die. I shall die." I find this scene most sad and harrowing.
To sum it up, this is a most superior and sumptuous period drama and I highly recommend it. The storyline is meaningful and the performances absolutely unforgetable.

A Season to Remember...

This season's ending certainly does tie things up...

You are no longer left unsettled, uncertain, or afraid for Felicity Porter. She has grown into an independent, challenging, though a still emotionally-driven individual.

The creators of Felicity deserve a job well done...

I hope you all have enjoyed, what is 'Felicity', as much as I have grown to love her.

One of the Greats.

I think that this movie is possibly one of the greatest animated movies ever created. I watched it first when I was about 5 years old ... and never saw it again until I caught I glimps of it while flipping through channels when I was 22, and I knew exactly what it was within 2 seconds. That's how memorable the movie was for me. Of course, when I was five I liked it because it had unicorns in it - what five year old, doesn't like unicorns? I still like it because of the unicorns, but I absolutely LOVE it because of the story and the beautiful job the animators have done with it. It's such a touching, sad, story with equally touching, sad, music, intended (in my opinion) more for adults than for children, although both will enjoy it. I still cry every time I watch it. I probably always will.If you were ever a child, this movie will touch your heart.
