My Favorite

This is my favorite U2 VHS. I love hearing the details about the making of this incredible album. You get a real idea of who these men are and what their music means to them. They have an incredible gift, they are huge stars, but at the same time they are everyday guys. They give commentary on their songs and there is footage of their Joshua Tree tour.

A great combination of sci-fi and comedy!

Innerspace has always been one of my all-time favorite movies, so I was excited to find out it would be released on DVD. Perhaps the best part of the DVD is the excellent digital transfer they did. The movie was originally released in 1986, but it looks and sounds brand new on the DVD. You can see and hear things you couldn't before, an example being the deep bass of Putter's heartbeat during the scenes taking place inside of him. If you are a fan of this movie and have a DVD player, do yourself a favor and pick this up. You will not be disappointed!

Well Done!

The Kikaida dvd's are excellent. Video is remastered, subtitles are done very well, great extras. The show really good too, lots of crazy Destuctiods for Kikaida to do battle with. The story is closer to the Kamen Rider series than the Ultraman shows.

This is a dvd release that should be supported by all fans of Japanese sci fi. Kamen Rider V3 will be released by the same company in late 2005.

Saturday Night Fever - movie DVD cover picture
The Disco Era Classic Film

In 1977 not everybody knew what the innovative disco music was, and to what extent night clubing was going on. This film depicts John Travolta as Brookyn's Tony Manero, hero to the dance floor. His dead end job at a paint store makes him live for The Saturday Night disco scene. Travolta meets Karen Gorney and enters a dance contest with her but she refuses his sexuall advances. Gorney sees herself going to Manhattan to move on with her life. Travolta sees her as a snob. One local girl played by Donna Pescow likes Travolta but is pushed away by him for Gorneys character since she's a better dancer and Pescow is considered boring. What underlies is Trvoltas often at odds relationship with his family. Racial gang wars and a friend you can't help but wonder about his sexuality. Not only did this movie imitate the era, it influenced the next seven years with it's record selling soundtrack and the great timing in which some of the best nightclubs in America remained open. The movies message is vague but lets you fill in the blanks as Travoltas (Manero) becomes fed up with his existing lifestyle. Moviegoers became so enthralled with it, it would continue into the mid 80's. A PG version was recut to feature the dancing and less social conciousness with virtually no explicit language. This movie had one of the biggest impacts of late 70's films!

Terrific!

This is one of my favourite movies, aside from its wonderful soundtrack, it is just a really good movie. Tom Hanks produces it. With his production hits such as "My Big Fat Greek Wedding", you know he knows his stuff. This is one of the things he knows. This movie is absolutely wonderful.

Nightbreed - movie DVD cover picture
For once the monsters get to be the good guys.

I am a big fan of the Clive Barker novels and loved his film Hellraiser. That's why I gave Nightbreed a try, since it is based on his novel Cabal and he directed it himself. This proves that even the writer himself can have trouble putting his image of his novel on the big screen. It does portray an interesting story with some imaginative "demons" (even though most of them are corny at best), the film still comes out way to cheesy for my taste of horror films. Even more cheesy than Hellraiser III, with all those wierd "new" cenobites like camerahead. Sadly to say, I was disappointed with Nightbreed. With Barker at the helm, one would think it should've been great and refreshing. It's not. Does not come near the impact of Hellraiser and only slightly begins to tread the same grounds of that film.I still enjoyed Nightbreed, but it didn't impress me. Other Barker fans will probably like.

It's About Time I Reviewed This!

Since I will have the pleasure of seeing Dream Theater in concert this coming Thursday, July 10th (along with Queensryche and Fates Warning), I think it's about time I reviewed their marvelous DVD called METROPOLIS 2000: SCENES FROM NEW YORK. I've had this DVD since April of last year, but I never got a chance to give it a justifiable review. It seemed I was too speechless to do so. Not anymore. Since I'm hyped about this performance, I can finally speak my peace, if you will.
As you already guessed, this is the DVD counterpart for the live album LIVE SCENES FROM NEW YORK, which featured the entire full-length concert on three CDs. On the DVD however, it contains the band's final full performance of their classic concept album SCENES FROM A MEMORY from beginning to end. Although ironically, the sound quality of the CDs are superior to that of the DVD, nevertheless the picture quality is awesome and DT puts on a fiery, blistering performance that never lets up as soon as "Overture 1928" gets rolling.
Listening to this August 30, 2000 concert on CD is a great experience. Watching it is an entirely overwhelming experience altogether. Witnessing John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy, and Jordan Rudess go off on their instruments is jaw-dropping to watch. If you really didn't believe these guys could play like that, then you REALLY won't believe the stuff they do here. Lead singer James LaBrie is very strong vocally throughout, and John Myung, despite standing perfectly still the whole time, holds things together with his fast and fluid six-string bass.
To bring the SCENES story to life, the band uses actual movie footage (shot in Sweden) on the screens behind them as "reenactments" for the events described in the lyrics. I didn't mind the movie footage, but the psychedelic images that pop up here and there are pretty distracting. Sometimes they look cool (like during "The Dance of Eternity") and other times they frustrate (during "Fatal Tragedy"). At least they use them occasionally and they don't detract for the overall power of the concert. There's even a live narrator for "Regression" which was a neat touch.
There are a ton of great moments on here, but these have to be the best: the killer opening combo of "Overture 1928" and "Strange Deja Vu"; the band literally going nuts during the instrumental jam section of "Beyond This Life"; the dark, haunting rendition of "Home"; the breakneck performance of "Dance of Eternity"; and "The Spirit Carries On" which reaches an emotional, spiritual peak by bringing out Teresa Thompson and the full gospel choir to sing along with James.
The special features are also excellent. There's an insightful yet hilarious audio commentary with the entire band, discussing how the story, album, and music came into place; a short behind-the-scenes documentary; and bonus live footage from the concert's second set, comprised of the "Mind Beside Itself" trilogy, "Learning to Live," and the 23-minute juggernaut "A Change of Seasons."
This is a really great DVD. Dream Theater prove that they can pull off their complex, intricate music on stage and still know how to have fun. If the July 10th concert is anywhere near as good as this, I will be very impressed.
