Long Time Love for Dr Phibes

I first saw the Dr Phibes two picture series years ago and taped the "Dr Phibes rises again" sequel as the best of the two. I recently bought the DVD from Amazon and was amazed at the improved resolution and clarity over my treasured tape version. So if you have a tape version of either movie, get the DVD as it is a great improvement. As for the movie, what can I say. Vincent Price is a master of satire and plays it to the fullest in this movie. In spite of the horror you will laugh your head off at the way he lampoons the more serious horror movies. It's all preposterous but a great show, will keep teenagers glued to the screen for hours as well as me and I'm in my 80's.

Victor/Victoria - movie DVD cover picture

I can say this --- I never saw the whole movie back in the early 80's when it was on cable t.v. I had seen bits and pieces, and it appeared very odd to me. Now that I am older, wiser and have more control over the clicker, when I found this on PBS this past Sunday night, I couldn't resist it. Who can resist Julie Andrews singing? She is just utterly stunning in this movie. I also feel that for her take this part was a very bold statement on her part. It is such a departue from roles like Mary Poppins and Maria, and even the fair Eliza Doolittle, which she originated on Broadway. I'm sure her being married to the film's director, Blake Edwards, had something to do with her being in this movie, and I am so glad she did it!"A woman pretending to be a man pretending to be a woman"..this pretty much sums up the generality of the films' premise. She is Victoria, a down on her luck singer in clubs in Paris. It's when she meets up with Drag Queen, Toddie, played to the hilt by Robert Preston, the the scheme falls into play -- Enter Victor, the man role she plays. Toddie comes up with the idea. King Marchand, played coolly and quite humorously by the charming James Garner, is the man who falls for Victor. It really isn't as confusing as it sounds. I am pretty sure Marchand knew it was a woman all along. Victor becomes quite a showstopper in Paris. Eventually, Victor/Victoria, tells the truth. Watch to see what happens in the romance category. The acting all around in this film is awesome. Andrews, Preston, and Lesley Ann Warren, who plays the ditzy blond character, Norma, were all nominated for Oscars. And deservantly so! The music is great. The era was jazz, and Andrews really shows off her amazing vocal range here. The woman is such an amazing and talented entertainer. Preston and Andrews have a great chemistry on screen and stage together. Even if he is a drag queen, and she isn't really a man, they still shine together.Let's remember this is a Blake Edwards' movie. He brought us the Pink Pather movies, and "Ten". These were all very funny films, and this is very funny too. This is a fun, comical, musical film that stars very talented performers. It's great fun!

the greatest show ever!!

I am French, I discovered "Desperate Housewives" a few months ago in Ireland where I spent nine months as an erasmus student, and I got addicted to this show!! You can identify to the characters and it depicts American suburbia through an ironic point of view!
"Desperate Housewives" is definitely halfway between "sex and the city" and "American beauty"!!
This show is like cigarets: don't start or you'll get addicted!!!

L.A. Confidential - movie DVD cover picture

Director Curtis Hanson's L.A. CONFIDENTIAL is one of the first DVD's that I have bought and I still watch this movie on a regular basis with pleasure. Being an old fan of 15 years of James Ellroy, I was apprehending a lot the cinematographical adaptation of this masterpiece of american contemporary literature because the 1987 adaptation of BLOOD ON THE MOON, rebaptized COP and directed by James B Harris, was not at all impressive even with James Woods as Lloyd Hopkins.
Firstly, there is the casting, outstanding, with actors impersonating in a terrific manner the dozens of characters creating by James Ellroy. L.A. CONFIDENTIAL is not only the story of the investigation of a shooting in the Los Angeles of the early 50's, it's also the unique re-creation of the atmosphere of a period that should have been the paradise on earth, at least in the city of angels. Curtis Hanson, following James Ellroy, did a splendid job by smashing the false mirrors this society tried to believe in.
Fortunately, for once, a studio has decided to exploit the enormous possibilities of the DVD standard for a great movie. Usually, only artistically uninteresting blockbusters have the honour to be presented with important extra-features. So, don't hesitate, buy the DVD of L.A. CONFIDENTIAL, it's a movie to keep.
A DVD for your library.

very good

Seldom do you find a film that makes you feel as close to the characters as this one does. If I could put into words the range of emotion you will feel when viewing this series, you would purchase this set without hesitation.
Though it is true that this is not for everyone, those who can deal with the harshest realities of life will be blown away by the gritty "in your face" approach of this Mini-Series. You will find yourself hoping with all your heart that Gary or Fran will "straighten up" and get it together, only to realize that they are not pillars of strength and are sometimes doomed to fail, even before they start. The most disappointing thing about the series is that it ends. As you progress through the episodes you will gradually begin to dread the inevitable end, and it will leave you hungry for more.

Why Isn't His Splash Bigger???

You would think that when a comic of this genius is revealed to the public,it is with a louder bang; a bigger splash. He was HILARIOUS! The film was too short. Obviously there was more that was to be said, had he had the time to say it. I want to see more....When, where, and how can that happen? Obviously he is a King of Comedy and Walter Latham dropped the ball when he wasn't added to the line-up!

criterion dvd review

Im not going to read all 843 reviews so i figure "there are many like it but this one is mine."When I first saw this movie in the theater I hated it. I still hate it. Is it possible that u could have so much action in a movie that it bores u senseless? Yes it is.Ok now for the DVD criterion collection I absolutely loved it. First of all an unrated directors cut that has a store security sticker that says must be 18 to purchase. Well, criterion has never let me down so i got. The extra material really make this movie a whole lot better. Not this added footage in the movie mind you but michael bays commentary is definately a plus. Also a highlight on this is the gag reel. Its totally uncensored stuff and its great. Theres also a great technical commentary as well as excellent production making of featuretts.Definately not the greatest movie of all time but for the person who loves movie making this is the 1 for u.
