Mulan (Disney Gold Classic Collection) - movie DVD cover picture
Mulan is one of the top three Disney movies of all time.

Disney's Mulan is packed with wonderful animation, fun music, and alot of great humor. Beautiful, true-to-life animation enhances this ancient story set in midevil China. The characters bring the story to life. Mulan is a character that relates to audience members of any age and gender. Other characters in the movie provide a wonderful ensemble of friendship, as well as a suspenseful conflict between the Chinese Imperialistic Army and the Evil Huns. The score in this movie is very well written. The music puts us in the appropriate mood and creates a real sense of Chinese culture. The songs are also well written and well performed. They are so good in fact that I wish more would have been written and included in the movie. As far as humor is concerned, this movie has it. Eddie Murphy brings true animation to life in this movie; his vocal talents shine through. Other characters, including Ling and his comrades and Crickee, my personal favorite, add a touch of realism through humor. Mulan is wonderful on all levels, which makes it such an enjoyable film for the family to watch together.

I have to admit that before seeing this movie, I wasn't a big fan of the Band, but their performance on this particular night really rocked. Kudos to Martin Scorsese for bringing us closer to the intimacy of the group in live performance. This intimacy is only hightened by the fact that the director seems to have made a concerted effort not to film the audience. There are also some wonderful performances by other musicians such as Joni Mitchell and Muddy Waters.
I have to say though that Bob Dylan had to be the worst performer on the night and I was glad when everybody else got up there to help him out.
Apparently when Scorsese showed the initial cut to Neil Young's manager he was furious as Neil had a huge cocaine booger hanging from his nostril. Somehow Scorsese managed to cover it up.

Standing ovation!!!

You really get to explore and understand extreme genius. Just as Amadeus showed us the tortured mind of Mozart and Shine, a surprising story about real-life classical pianist David Helfgott, A Beautiful Mind will also be an insightful classic.
Russell Crowe's performance was key to the success of this movie. Few, if any other could have brought to life the screen with such understanding of the character. Did not know the range that this actor possesses.

So we have another 'harrowing' film about drug addiction. Yeah we all know a small percentage of users end up completely destroying themselves. Yes, long term use of stimulants like diet pills and amphetamines leads to temporary psychosis. Let's see some films about the long, successful lives many addicts lead and here's a radical idea - how about showing the reality that the majority of drug users live long, happy, fullfilled lives? The movie is well acted and well executed, but it is a pretense and a distortion of reality which would be fine if it was openly so.

Barefoot Gen - movie DVD cover picture

I rented this movie one day just as a curiosity piece. It looked different from the rest of the boxes in the Anime section. No robots or half naked women or vampires or anything futuristic. It turned out to be a touching story of a boy & his family's struggle in Japan during the closing days of WWII. The animated bombing of Hiroshima is one of the most disturbing scenes I have ever watched-one can only imagine the horror of being there in person. But its the aftermath of the bombing that sends chills down my spine. This film is not Pro-Japanese or Pro-American. It tells it like it was. This is the kind of film parents should show children, teachers should show students. It transcends all ethnicity and makes the viewer think. I wish that it wasn't anime because a film like this needs more exposure than to be put into a category with few outside interests. If you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about, and if you haven't, then make it a point to.

One of the best action films ever...

I should thank my cousin for introducing me to Jackie Chan. After watching a few films I became fan... I watched his last him "Who am I?" and i should say you have to watch it if you get the chance. This film is not only an action film, it's one of the funniest films I have ever seen... You can be sure Jackie never uses stuntmen. If you watch the film you will understand what I mean. Those dangerous scenes up on the skyscraper... This man has no fear!... So go and watch this film!!!

Hey, the best reason to watch this movie is the ice cube scene with Elizabeth Hurley, this and this alone make this worth owning. That's all that needs to be said. Get some tissues ready.

Gamera Limited Edition Dvd Box Set - movie DVD cover picture

It was only recently, to be honest, that I first learned who Gamera even was. Godzilla? Sure, I grew up on the guy... I've got the lunchbox, have taped the Godzilla's Rockin' New Year's Eve special many times and even saw the Andrew Lloyd Weber adaptation on Broadway during its woefully short run in 1994.

But now there's a NEW guardian of the universe? Why didn't anyone tell me?? Finally, someone did. Specifically, it was a co-worker from the main office of the Tokyo-based manufacturing company (it shall remain nameless) for which I have worked for the last 8 years. He was relocated to New York and has become a rather good friend.

Hunushi is a fantastic resource for all things Japanese. One of those is monster movies ("kaiju" as the genre is called in Japan), and I am also a big fan. Knowing this, Hunushi recommended to me the first Gamera film when it was released in English in 1997. Since then, I have been hooked and wanting more.

Why do I like this Gamera series so much? The special effects are AWESOME, and the dubbing is simply masterful. Forget everything that you thought you knew about dubbed dialogue, as that knowledge is now useless and outdated. The story lines are engaging, the characters are well developed. These are great movies, period.

When I heard that a box set of all three movies (Gamera: Guardian of the Universe, Gamera 2: Attack of Legion and Gamera 3: Revenge of Iris) was available, I jumped on it.

I thought I knew why I was buying this box set, but I had no idea at the time that its most entertaining feature was an as-yet-unknown-to-me DVD extra. Within the extras of the second film, Gamera 2, the English-language director has created an entirely new and hilarious version of that film dubbed almost entirely with "red neck" character voices.

This is an absolute stitch, but in no way did it offend my delicate "kaiju" sensibilities. Gamera remains completely untouched in this tongue-in-cheek version of the film. Only the human contingent, scurrying below, is made to look anything less than admirable. The bottom line is this: I have never laughed harder in my life (by the way, there is also a fantastic DVD extra on the 3rd disc but I'll let you discover that one on your own).

I hope you enjoy these films as much as I have. Thankfully, it looks like Japan's best kept "kaiju" secret has just been let out of the box!

This movie rocks big time... This is an example of what a big budget movie should be like: AWESOME SPECIAL EFFECTS combined with an AWESOME STORY!!! Not just a typical slam-bang SFX movie like that piece of crap Armageddon... Ah-nuld and James Cameron make a perfect star-director tandem, much like the DeNiro-Scorsese tandem.... This movie is a classic. Don't let the snobs who think that sci-fi doesn't cut it tell you otherwise...
