Most memorable movie of my childhood!

I rented this movie for myself and my sister (35yrs and 42yrs respectively) this past weekend. Not only did we love it as much as in our childhood, my 5 year old daughter was completely charmed as well. If only studio execs realized this today! PLEASE send our message of desire for re-release!

Turning the Corner

After DVD #4 in this series turned into a recap, it is quite a relief to find the story underway again, with all of the characters following one path or another towards Jaguera's keep. Most viewers don't realize that this is a 30 episode series (the last four are an OVA), but even with that much remaining, these episodes are tense and exciting as we build to our first chilling meeting with the darkest of the Nobles.

The opening episodes follow Tsume, Toboe, and Hige in their search for Kiba. As hope dims their irritation with each other mounts only the discovery of a native tribe calleed the Hmong (very much echo our own Navaho and Hopi cultures) manages to keep the peace. There the wolves are accepted, and we first encounter the legend that it was wolves that were the first people, from whom humans were made. This experience makes so great an impression on Toboe that he feels a strong urge to remain with the human tribe. Kiba, in the meantime, seems to have wandered into a version of paradise. It is a beautiful world of woods and water where he meets a beautiful feline (My) who seems to be his soul mate. Gradually we realize that, for all his happiness, he is in danger of forgetting both Cheza and his quest. Finally they are reunited, and the wolves start out again after Cheza, somehow closer together for all their experiences.

The wolves come upon a battle between Jaguera's troops and the remaining soldiers of a large city. The join in and are directed to Jaguera's castle when the seek clues about Cheza's whereabouts. Next, attention moves to the fates of Cheza, Blue, Hubb, and Cher. Several battles trigger a great deal of path crossing and the four are first reunitied and then split up to make their way to the final confrontation. Then we are back with the wolves on their trip across a sea of ice. This brings about one of the most dramatic fights of the series as Toboe suddenly comes of age as a wolf and ceases to be the runt of the litter in one spectacular moment. Finally we come to Jaguera's keep for one final chilling image. Once again, we know why this has been a consistently excellent series.

One of the things that make this series so memorable is the consistent attention to character development. So many anime hold themselves to a minimal amount of character writing. We rarely see characters like go through the kind of development that Quent Yaiden work's through as he realizes that Blue is a wolf, not the family dog, or Toboe's remarkable turnabout in this DVD. We wind up caring as much about the characters as we do the plot, as much impressed by their depth as we are by the artwork and music. Wolf's Rain turns into a memorable experience, rather than just an entertainment. I cannot recommend this series enough.

Timeless

I first saw this film 20 years ago, on Showtime network. I was mesmerized and entranced. I understand this was originally a stage production, and it has been flawlessly adapted to film. The cast has real chemistry and the story is not predictable, which makes it that much more enjoyable.
This film is an excellent drama, sprinkled with just the right amount of laughs along the way. It is a wonderful character study and obviously long-overlooked, so I am glad to know a whole new audience will have an opportunity to discover it!

5 Stars for Charade and 3 Stars for The Truth About Charlie!

I was in a record store looking at the used DVD's they had for sale and I saw this DVD and the price was very reasonable especially for one of the bonus features which is an anamorphic widescreen version of Charade that has good picture quality and is on the other side of this Truth about Charlie DVD. The Truth about Charlie is okay and the acting from Thandie Newton, Mark Wahlberg, and Tim Robbins is good but the plot which has it's okay moments is kind of uneven and rushed and of course is nowhere near as good as Charade which is a fantastic movie but it was so worth buying this DVD just to get a nice copy of that gem! Audrey Hepburn and Cary Grant are wonderful and charming and Walter Matthau was also very good and so were James Coburn and George Kennedy who were the best of the villains. I was going to buy the Criterion Widescreen Charade DVD but it went out of print and the last time I was looking to buy it used the lowest price was 50 dollars so I bought this used Truth About Charlie/Charade DVD instead and the 5 stars is for Charade while if I was just rating The Truth About Charlie I would give it 3 stars for the good acting from Thandie Newton, Mark Wahlberg and Tim Robbins but I wouldn't rate it more then 3 stars because of the uneven plot. I just found out that Criterion is putting out a new anamorphic Widescreen DVD for Charade and I would buy it but only if the extra features are are so good that it would make it worth paying the expensive Criterion prices! Btw: the Paris location scenes in both movies are great!

Certainly Not Inferior

Try is certainly not an inferior part of the Slayers collection. It is everything the previous collections were and in some ways more. There are tears to your eyes humor coupled with the traditional climactic endings, which has made Slayers the best anime ever created. These are all well intermingled, creating a varied and exciting series of episodes. Many people say that Try is darker and inferior to the previous series. I disagree with them. It is its own series and quite deserving of praise. It is a worthy addition to my collection.

Futurama is one of the best

Futurama Volume 2 is a great buy for the Futurama fan. Hey, it was only on 5 seasons so it's easy to own the entire collection. Still, I wish it would come back. Volume two continues to amuse with its sharp wit and creative stories... and some not so creative. Some quick humor as well as some pretty lame puns makes it fun to watch. Hey, whatever makes you laugh right? Seasons 3, 4, and 5 will soon be added to my collection.

The Art of Conversation

I saw this movie on television many years ago late at night. I sat on the living room floor about 5 feet from the screen and was absolutely enthralled with the dinner conversation between two friends. In a television world, we have become passive viewers and forgotten how to engage in the art of verbal conversation between people of experience whose curiosity leads them to consider everybody and everything interesting. If you are into action movies with violence and pyrotechnics, you won't want this one. If you are interested in people and their experiences ... buy this! ... Kyle R. Simplot

A lush and luminous romantic tragedy

Not much of a story, but a terrific movie. I first saw this in the mid-sixties with my new husband - and he left the theater in tears. Yeah, he's still a softie, so it didn't surprise me that he cried again when we recently watched it again. Set in the mid-1800s, it's the story of a married (with children) Swedish army officer who falls madly in love with a beautiful Danish tightrope walker. In spite of pressures from all sides, they abandon life, responsibility, society, and conventions to be together. The music is rhapsodic, the photography is gorgeous, the setting n an idyllic forest is lush - and the tragic outcome is inevitable. And it's based on a true story. Who could ask for more?

City of God - movie DVD cover picture
CIDADE DE DEUS

Simply put, this is probably one of the single most significant films ever released, and (so far) undoubtedly the most important film of the 21st century. You know, I won't bog you down with technical and story details, 'cause you don't want to read those again. But the film is packed to the gills with so much rich detail and believably realistic acting from no one's residing in the very "favela" that is the film's namesake, which inherently implies that it warrants something uniquely special. Any misanthropic gutterpunk in the US can hate our government because of what it deprives its citizens, but you know what? They haven't seen this movie; they have not known true and calculated governmental neglect. But, I'll just let these facts speak for themselves: "Cidade de Deus" has remained in Bay Area movie theaters for going on fifteen months straight, the controversy of the film's failure to gain entry into the 2002 Oscars' Best Foreign Language Film category heralded delayed critical celebratory nominations for the following year, in which it garnered every single important nomination excluding "Best Picture". And the film is Brazil's number one all-time money maker. That not enough? The film's reception and high accolades are also responsible for the Brazilian government prompting socioeconomic reform. This is what I mean when I use the term "significant," and I don't use it lightly. The direction is beyond craftsmanlike, the cinematography exemplary, the screenplay is crisp, layered, and cleverly nonlinear without ever making the viewer play catchup. And the editing... oh, man, the editing. It won the British Film Award for Editing back in 2002, and in case you don't know, that is a granddaddy prize for technical film achievement. The film boasts maybe one of the strongest senses of place I've ever witnessed in film. This film takes place INSIDE that world; the world does not take place around the film, if that makes any sense. If you want to watch something that will teach you about the forgotten corners of the world even more than being uncommonly entertaining and violently riveting, this is the film to wake up with. I cannot offer a higher recommendation.
