Memento pulls you in, minute by minute

Memento is one of the most captivating movies I have ever seen. I ran across it while channel surfing the cable movie channels, and was pulled in immediately. Conceptually, a movie that moves backward in time sounds contrived and very difficult to pull off. Memento pulls it off beautifully with strong performances from the three key actors, Guy Pearce, Carrie Anne Moss, and Joe Pantoliano.
Memento is my favorite movie from 2001!!!

It was a Fantastic Movie. The book was just fab!

I'm an 11 year old that has seen Titanic several(six)times. It is a wonderful movie that deserves to be an Oscar-winner.The charachters were strong and very poised. They(Kate n' Leo)were well prepared for Titanic and they said each word of their script just right. The book was awsome, too. It was full of striking facts that I didn't know.Great going,James! The book AND the movie were just fab! END

One of the greats.

I caught this movie one night on Bravo and was instenly drawn in to it. The costumes and music are a visual delight, and the acting worthy of some sort of awards.. I realize this movie was released in 98 but someone should really consider re-releasing it to the big screen.. I would be willing to say if this were to happen the amount of money maid would triple from its origanl debuet. I have come to this conclusion based on the booming exceptance of sexual orientation here in the states in the last year.. If you have not seen this movie I suggest you do.

Jane Austin's Pride and Prejudice

I love Jane Austen and all filmed versions of her books; with the possible exception of "Mansfield Park." But this version of Pride and Prejudice I really enjoy because it is so campy. I truly wish that it would be made on dvd because my vhs is in very bad condition after so much viewing.

Troy (Two-Disc Full Screen Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
The best movie so far this year

You'd think for $185 million (or whatever) the producers of "Troy" could have coughed up a historical consultant. Brad Pitt's biceps were the best thing about this movie (hence the 2 stars), which takes the Iliad and mythological tradition and dilutes it for modern viewers (in many ways insulting the intelligence of modern viewers). Ancient Greek culture is left in the dust (Achilles would NEVER have decapitated a statue of Apollo!). The best sequence runs from the battle between Achilles and Hector through the scene between Achilles and Priam, which was reasonably true to the Iliad or at least close enough; the rest...whatever. An archaeological disaster as well: hello, coins weren't invented until long after the time of the alleged Trojan War. The production designer seems to have flipped through an art history book and picked random works from many centuries and ancient cultures to decorate his sets with no rhyme or reason. I spotted reliefs from Persian Persepolis, Assyrian pillars, columns from Knossos, Egyptian statues, and one really really bad colossal statue of who-is-that-supposed-to-be. Gimme a break. At least I'll know if my students really read the Iliad or saw this movie. I'm just sad that people will come away from it thinking this is what Greek myth and culture is all about.

Not a shlocky Hollywood drama - see this movie!

Several lonely characters in a small non descript New Jersey town do not make for a major Hollywood drama. But this "small movie" is very human and manages to sustain your involvement without the usual gratuitous doses of fight or flesh. Finnbar, the main character, is a midget who inherits a disused smalltown train station when his boss dies. He converts this to his new home next to the tracks where trains no longer stop. Initially trying to shun contact with others, his life becomes slowly woven with other characters in this little New Jersey town of Newfoundland. There is Joe, the hot dog/coffee stand vendor, who continually receives calls from his ill father; Olivia, the artist haunted by the accidental death of her young son, which has estranged her from the husband from whom she has now seperated; a pretty young local town librarian who admires the midget's striking facial features; and a young black schoogirl who keeps popping in and out from seemingly nowhere, seeking to get Finnbar to overcome his reluctance to make a presentation on trains to her grade school class. What binds Finnbarr to Joe and Olivia is their common sense of intense loneliness, for which the abandoned silent tracks provide an unmistkable metaphor. Several superbly shot scenes and some wonderful dialogue are what keeps you hooked throughout this movie in addition to some very fine acting. You almost begin feeling after a while that you are next to the same railway tracks or in the same living room as the three main characters. I only wished, when it was over, that this type of movie were more the norm. Please see this movie!

The most quality sequel in the series.

You can't beat the original, but you can come damn close, and this one does. After suffering the pointless 3, the mediocre 4, and the abhorrent 5 and 6, we finally see the return of Jaime Lee Curtis in the role that made her popular. Laurie Strode's return is not just the only catch for this film. The great cast, including Josh Hartnett, Adam Arkin, and LL Cool J, fleshes out a wonderfully written script, as well as a feasible plot line. Michael and Laurie play off each other phenomenally, and we finally see Laurie become the heroine was always knew she should be. Overall, a must-see with a killer ending (no pun intended).

Wonderful Movie!!

This Movie was absolutely amazing! I laughed, Cried and felt like I was actually there. This is a very realistic movie with great special effects also. I loved how the actors and actresses portrayed the characters. Ben, Kate & Josh all deserve credit for this one, as well as everyone who participated in it. It was one of my most favorite movies. This really brought to life the sacrifice and noble actions of our boys who fought, and made me feel a very real sense of pride and saddness at thier courage and sacrifice.

Thelma & Louise - movie DVD cover picture
Flying High

Perhaps I am a bit behind the times, but I recently viewed 'Thelma and Louise' for the first time. At first I was skeptical that the movie would live up to all the positive stories I heard about it years ago when it was released. After watching the entire movie I am happy to admit that I was wrong to be so pessimistic.
'Thelma and Louise' is a brilliant look at the way our lives are affected by the decisions we make and it offers an insightful glimpse into the way many women think. Although I cannot relate totally to either of these women, virtually every woman I know has personality attributes similar to these characters. Their accidental adventures and traumatic experiences portray a magnificent connection between cause and effect.
True friendship is what holds this entire movie together and it is easy to see why both these women were nominated for Academy Awards. I may have been skeptical at first, but I found myself rooting for these women and considering what I would do in similar situations. While I cannot imagine ever going to such extremes, this movie presents a valuable lesson in learning how to cope with the problems life throws your way.
