Masterpiece of fear

It is quite simply said, everyone who likes to let their imagination run wild, this movie will probably be the biggest scare you will ever encounter. No fancy special effects or incredible settings, but a masterpiece of film. This is a must see. Open up... and be terrified.

God Told Me To Write This...

Yes, this is one weird movie. Mass murder has broken out in New York City like a particularly bad flu epidemic. The film opens with a guy perched on a water tower, gunning down pedestrians for no apparent reason. Tony Lo Bianco is a cop named Nicholas who climbs the tower to talk to the man. When asked why he did it, the gunman says, "God told me to." He then takes a swan-dive onto the street below. Nicholas is a very religious man and is fascinated with the idea of God telling anyone to commit mass murder. The murders keep happening. A man goes to the market and stabs a bunch of customers. Andy Kaufman is a cop who goes berserk at the St. Patrick's Day parade and shoots cops and bystanders alike. Another guy kills his entire family and calmly waits for the police. Of course there's one common denominator in all of these incidents. God told them to do it. Nicholas digs deeper into the mystery to the point of losing his job. He seeks out a young man with long blonde hair who was seen with all the killers just before their crimes. He finds the blonde man's mother, who promptly tries to kill him. Later, Nicholas is told by an older, retired officer about a strange occurance back in 1951. A woman he picked up (running naked down the road) told him she'd been abducted by aliens and raped. Nicholas finds her, still living, in a nursing home. What dark secrets does she hold? What connection is there between Nicholas and the blonde haired man? GOD TOLD ME TO is a VERY different movie! Is God really orchestrating these killings? Or is some alien hybrid only impersonating the deity? Check this one out...

Cosmos Series

I was ten when this series originally aired, and I remember it well. I sat up many nights watching this show when first on, and later in PBS reruns. It effected me then and still does today. I've also seen the Turner re-release on VHS in 1989. The Turner tapes were true to the shows in not modifying them with updates. And there was also an interview with Sagan and Turner included which is not with this current DVD release. Keep in mind this new series of DVDs has had new visuals added in or taking the place of some old shots which may seem dated today. You can easily tell the newer additions by for example seeing shuttle launches pasted in montages when in 1980 there were no shuttle launches. But this helps to update the series for people today watching it. I have no clue if any info was taken out of the show since the first edition, since I did not compare the old VHS tapes I had with the new DVDs. But there are addendas added on to the shows end which have 10 year later additions to info mentioned in the show. But to basically sum up what others have said- this show is a masterpiece. Though the evolution theory can still be argued over the creation theory. I liked watching this show again. It reminded me of the old joke "billions and billions" of stars, etc. Anyone with a interest in science or space should get this set, but as said keep in mind it has been modified from the original tv release.

Sarah Brightman - One Night in Eden - movie DVD cover picture

I'm convinced that if I ever hear angels sing, they will sound like Sarah Brightman! What a performance - truly breathtaking. The extras on the DVD add to the experience, as she shares her thoughts and feelings about the songs. Nice background info that adds to the enjoyment of listening to her sing. The stage, settings and costumes were wonderful. Watch this DVD with the lights turned down and the surround-sound turned up. You'll feel like you've seen her live in concert. BRAVO!

The Ultimate Music Video

My only complaint about this was too short. I could have watched another hour if the quality stayed the same. It was unfortunate that Run Lola Run didn't have move exposure in the US. It was the perfect fusion of form and function. I'm not sure what played a more important role, the music, the story, or the red hair. They were all intertwined so perfectly that I found myself drawn in more than I've found with almost any other movie.
This movie is driven by a pulsating, drving beat. I found myself unable to keep from moving with it. But, it's more than just a music video. The story behind this movie, similar to Sliding Doors, is one of "What if..." It takes you through three different scenarios showing how everything is affected by everything else. The slightest change can cause an entire day to go differently for everyone. The metaphysical ramifications are astounding. The future's not fixed. Our lives aren't predetermined. It's also frightening. One small change can alter the entire course of history.
Of course, this is completely unnecessary to enjoy the movie. What this movie lacks is tedium. It never lets you down and is always engaging. It also has very red hair.

Endearing without being maudlin

Lovely and endearing movie about two brothers, one a mildly retarded garbageman (Hulce) and the other an medical intern (Liotta) trying to get through life. Film makes its points subtly and with great care, and never steps wrong until the last scene or two, but is brilliant otherwise. Lee Curtis, as Liotta's girlfriend, is also splendid. They don't make 'em like this anymore, for a reason.

Henson's Best

This is a masterpiece. Many people consider "Labyrinth" to be Henson's best movie, but "Dark Crystal" has an incredible mysticism associated with it that no other movie has been able to develop. I only have one complaint about this movie: it was too ambitious for the budget alloted to it. This is especially noticable in some of the sets, which are often too small, and that some of the lighting was not as good as one would expect. However, this movie more than makes up for those shortcomings with story, the excellent directing, and some of the best animatronic puppets ever created. This movie is one of a kind. No one else has ever made anything like it, and this is totally different from anything else Henson ever created.

Grows on me over time

To be honest, the first time I saw this film I thought it was overhyped. The second time I saw this film, I thought it was interesting. When I saw it for the third time, on this criterion collection dvd, it won me over.
The most compelling part of this film is the way it comes out of nowhere, the way we begin to see how little common things we say and do have more meaning than we can realize. In the beginning of the film, you see Ossie Davis' character as lazy and pitiful. By the time you travel in the shoes of the characters, you start to wonder how he could be so brave.
