This is a great movie! It really brings out the child in me, and I can't help but get all the terrific songs stuck in my head all day. The acting is great from both young Jennifer Connelly and David Bowie, whose character, Jareth, I love the most. He really brings the character to life.

The puppetry and special effects might be considered a tad cheesy by today's standards, but I honestly don't see how it could detract from such a wonderful story and great direction. It's a charming little fantasy, giving viewers an escape from everyday life. Watch it and love it. :)

As riveting and suspenseful as any film you're likely to see

In the past, I've occasionally stumbled upon ESPN's live coverage of the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee contest conducted in Washington, DC. I never paid much attention because the event never seemed to be all that exciting. However, this 2002 documentary of the 1999 National Spelling Bee is anything but boring.
In the beginning, the viewer is given brief but informative backgrounds on each of the film's eight subjects. The one thing that begins to come across almost immediately is how much these kids care about competing and succeeding and the fact that the parents of each care almost as much (or perhaps even more in some cases) as the kids themselves. Most of the parents spend their free time helping the kids practice spelling words.
We're told early on that nine million kids participate in spelling bees every year and that only 249 will make it to Washington, DC. The fact that these 8 (and the other 241 who are not a focus of the film) have already won numerous local and regional spelling bees within their own states is an accomplishment itself. That one will end up being the best speller out of nine million (and beat the best of the best), is simply amazing.
As the film focuses more and more on the national competition, I found myself becoming nervous right along with the kids and parents, hoping that I wouldn't hear that little bell at the end of a misspelled word which tells the participant that they may now exit stage right as it is all over with. I wanted all eight to win but the one I found myself rooting for the most was Neil Kadakia, a 12 year old Indian boy from San Clemente, California. His dedication, as well as that of his parents (particularly his father, who makes some encouraging and appreciative comments about the USA) was incredible. It is mentioned that Neil and his father studied thousands, yes thousands, of words a day in preparation. I'll not spoil the outcome for those who haven't seen it. Maybe one of the eight wins, maybe they don't.
Moreover, this is a remarkable depiction of dedicated people. Unlike some so-called "documentary filmmakers", director Jeffrey Blitz is content to make a true documentary by allowing his subjects and their surroundings tell the story. Like other great documentaries (Harlan County USA, American Dream, The Thin Blue Line) this is also a great film.

THE MOSTEST, hillarious, side-splitting show ever!!!!!

Believe it or not, the first time I encountered Peter and his brood was when my son stayed up late one weekend night and called me in the room to see what was making him roar with laughter. My son is 8. This particular episode was moderately tame and I could NOT stop laughing along with him!! After catching the next few episodes I was hooked, my son was sent to bed earlier on the weekends and my dog was eyeing my martinis.
IF you don't own this you HAVE to buy it-- It is PURE comic genius.

An outstanding movie of the peaceful warrior

A wonderful movie this is. Sir Richard Attenborough's 1982 Acadaemy Award Winner for Best movie shows his direction and insight into the first leader of independent India Mohandras Gandhi. The movie is reafirming to those who choose peace and love instead of violence and hatred.
Ben Kingsley gives a convincing and mesmorising portrayal of Mohandas Gandhi, the peaceful warrior. Kingsley rightly deserved the 1982 Oscar for Best Actor. From the moment you first see Gandhi in the movie you forget it is Ben Kingsley playing him, and start to think it is Gandhi. The movie is shot in some beautiful places in India as well as the not so beautiful places such as the riots in the large cities. Either way, the movie gives the important events in the history of India during and after British occupation in an unflinchingly manner.
I consider Mohandras Gandhi a personal hero of mine and his hatred of violence but his refusal to kneel down to racism, opression of the poor and wrong doing in the name of greater empire glory is a message all of humanity should know about. His words and insight are so revelant to the world today even 50 years after his death. This is a movie that captures the insight of Gandhi, it shows the personal struggle of him and the people of India during the time of British occupation and its eventual freedom. Also shown is the tragic conflict at the time between the newly independent India and the new Islamic Nation of Pakistan and what Gandhi tried to do to bring the two cultures together peacefully. Unfortunately today there is still suspicion and hatred between the two nations. But we all should hope that peace will eventually spread throughout the two nations and the world. What an excellent movie this is and is highly recommended to everyone.

Beyond Evangelion

When I first saw this short film, I was trill by the resemblance to the world famous TV anime series "Neo Genesis Evangelion". In Fact I believe this is the getting even version of a wish come true from director Makoto Shinkai. For you fans of EVA this is a most see. I will love to see this beautiful idea, converted into a full series, I was really disappointed with the un expected end, but never the less, is unique, beautiful.

one of the greatest gangster movies ever made

The chainsaw scence has got to be one of the nastiest scenes I have seen in a movie. Al Pacino comes accross excellently as Tony Montana, and Michelle Pfieffer deserves to have an oscar for her performance. This movie also reaches high for the number of times the characters say "fock", yu know what i mean if youve seen this already, if you havent, go buy it immediately!

The Best and Saddest Movie I Have Ever Seen!!!

The reason I put 5 stars was because it had some things happen that happen to me. Like Mandy gets teased by the boys and girls but she still has other friends, I get teased by some boys and some girls but I am a little popular. The reason I called it sad was because I cried from when they found out she had cancer intill the end. Another reason I loved it was because Mandy is so Pretty and Shane West is the hottest guy I have ever seen. So if you are reading this shane I am single! LOL! Any Way I want every one to see and buy this movie!Your Friend,Kasey

Great Pregnancy Exercise Video

I bought this video as the weather turned bitterly cold and I could no longer continue long walks outdoors. It is great for getting your heartrate up, breaking a light sweat, stretching and toning, and preparing for birth. The salsa section was a little hard for me to follow at first, but once I got the hang of it I found it a fun way to exercise. On the DVD, there are bonus sections about moves and positions to help you during labor, provided you are not confined to a hospital bed. I also like that once you know the routines, you can turn the narration off and just follow along with the music.
One note, the "yoga burn" section is not really yoga. I like this section, but if you're accustomed to practicing yoga you may find it to be quite different from your expectations. It is based on a few basic yoga postures, like warrior and mountain pose, but there is quite a bit of fast movement and no long, meditative poses.
I use this video alternately with "Yoga Journal's Prenatal Yoga" and find them to be excellent complements to each other. The Prenatal Yoga video has many quiet, meditative yoga poses (modified for pregnancy) to build strength and tranquility while FitMama is fast-paced and upbeat to build cardiovascular fitness.

Always a favorite of mine. Why haven't you seen it, yet?

Quentin Tarantino claimed to be disappointed with Tony Scott's treatment of Tarantino's script, but I have read the script and I can't imagine a better showing. Tarantino has proved to be a master at recycling the cliches, the themes, and the characters of our culture, but in this movie he held it together with an unusually touching love story of two simple nobodies in an antagonistic environment. The dialogue was magnificent, but the delivery was divine. How did they get this cast??? Dennis Hopper, Gary Oldman, Christopher Walken, James Gandolfini, Val Kilmer, Brad Pitt, Chris Penn, Tom Sizemore, Patricia Arquette, Christian Slater, and Samuel L. Jackson??? Not only does this movie have one of the greatest ensembles, these guys are at their best playing off one another. Walken vs. Hopper, probably the best moment of both their careers in a 10 minute scene. Gary Oldman, an underrated genius and a Brit, goes almost undetected as a Detroit pimp who believes he's black. Gandolfini put himself on the map in this film as a talky, executioner similar to Mr. Blonde in Reservoir Dogs. The movie had a simple and even flimsy plot, but the dialogue and acting elevate the formula to art.

Day of the Dead - movie DVD cover picture
"I'M runnin' this monkeyfarm now, Frankenstein!"

George A. Romero has a way with dead things. He can make totally believable situations out of the most outrageous premises. In DAY OF THE DEAD, Romero pits his army of decaying cannibals against a revamped missile silo full of soldiers and scientists. This third installment gets the point of utter hopelessness across loud and clear! We have degenerated into nothing more than food for the zombies that now outnumber us by hundreds of thousands to one. Humankind is on the brink of total extinction! Can this small band of scientists find some way to control these creatures, or will we go the way of the dinosaur, wiped from the face of the earth by the living dead? Dr. Logan (aka: Dr. Frankenstein) believes he can train the crazy carnivores to be socialized. He keeps one locked up, and has even named him / it BUB. Of course, the military types who are protecting Logan and company think he's nuts. After their commanding officer dies, he is replaced by Major Rhodes, who figures that the scientists are all idiots and the only good zombie is a (truly) dead zombie! The tension and insanity build to a finale of blood and flying intestines! I consider this movie to be every bit as good as either Night or Dawn. After all, they go together as 3 different chapters of one big story. Soon, LAND OF THE DEAD will continue this horrifically cool saga. Romero is a genius! I recommend watching all of his zombie epics back to back. Goodnight, don't let the bed-Bubs bite...
