Ed Sullivan's Rock 'n' Roll Classics Boxed Set - movie DVD cover picture
You cannot please all of the people all of the time.

Jeez! I cannot believe some of the overly negative and somewhat paranoid reviews of this amazing set.I mean, where else can you get so many performances of artists from the 1960's in colour? The picture quality is very good and it's all beautifully packaged in a set looking like a 1960's TV with a 3-dimensional image on the front. The set also has comments and film throughout telling us about the history of the times as well as an interview with Ed Sullivan and his wife. Now some fans may be disappointed for whatever reason, but for a few to give only one star to this magnificent set, with well over 100 performances by some of the world's best artists,is just over-reacting.It has nine performaces by Elvis Presley plus many performances by artists such as The 4 Tops,The Supremes(6 performances),The Jackson 5,Stevie Wonder,James Brown,The Beatles(6 performances),The Rolling Stones,The Carpenters,Tom Jones,The Beach Boys,Hermans Hermits,The Association,The Animals,The Mamas and The Papas,Johny Rivers,The 4 Seasons,The Temptations(6 performances),The Rightous Brothers,Smoky Robinson and The Miracles,Jerry Lee Lewis,Buddy Holly,Lou Rawls,Sly And The Family Stone,Jackie Wilson,The 5th Dimension,Gerry And The Pacemakers,The Searchers,Fats Domino,Lulu,Sonny and Cher,Paul Anka,Marvin Gaye,Bo Diddley,The Doors,Jefferson Airplane,Creedence Clearwater Revival,Little Anthony and The Imperials,Bobby Darin Jannis Joplin,Santana and others. And most of these performances are in colour and this is the only set to have this. The early performances by The Beatles and the 1950's artists are in black and white, but it is very rare to see so many of these artists in full colour. So those few that are disappointed are entitled to their opinions, but I think that this set is fantastic. To counter one poster's comments, the Hullabaloo set is mostly black and white and has only a few colour performances as the rest of the colour versions were lost. The Ed Sullivan Box Set has many more performances in colour.

Better than being in a cell

It seems to me as if critics do not like this movie for its bloody content or its hype. But let's face it, this is "Hannibal Lecter" did you think that it would be like a trip to Disney? The game of cat and mouse keeps the movie going, adding suspense. And as you know any movie with a depraved serial killer needs gore as well as art and Hopkins certainly provides that. I thought that Moore's acting was as dry as a cactus. She ment more time busting "Drumgo" than Hopkins eluding her with snares. Besides the dryness the only other flaw would be that Hopkins doesn't seem to have a point to his killings. In my opinion this version is far better, as in the last, Hopkins was in a cell the entire movie!

must for any definitive sci-fi collection

all four alien movies in one fair price. whats not to like. My favorite one is Alien Resurrection, but I get a lot out of the others. The behind the scenes extra's are a good bonus, for all the trivia hounds. The collection box is well done, for your display.

'Kolchak:the nightstalker' t.v. series.

There are very few science fiction programmes or films I have ever watched with true enjoyment, and this is one of the finest examples. This has appeared a number of times on TV in its edited versions (broadcast as "films"), but the story lines in the edited versions have missed the point of story and plot development. Each episode is linked from beginning to end, and as the series progresses, the viewer will be taken in by the developments that occur. For those who have never seen this, I provide a brief description.
The story starts with the pilot episode in which a group of ships are heading towards a planet for a meeting on a peace treaty. On their way, they are attacked by Sylons (robots controlled by an evil master). The Galactica is the only surviving ship in this attack, and the remainder of the story unfolds to reveal how the enemy is defeated, and how Galactica attempts to reach its final destination - Earth. There are twists, character developments, and a very original plot make this series a unique one and a classic. I have not seen such a depth of story telling in any other science fiction programme or film. The special effects for its time are far superior to Star Trek or Space 1999 (in my opinion, another classic). The acting is superb. I personally feel that Battlestar Galactica was grossly underrated, but I am glad to see that it is being released on DVD for the benefit of a new generation to enjoy.

A Masterpiece of Television History

I am quite picky to what I watch on TV expecially with all the garbage thats on these days. Lately I have began watching the Soprano Series, currently on Season 3 but have been watching it quite quickly. The writing is brilliant, the acting is one of the best ever to be seen on TV. So convincing that it seems like you're right there watching the real people in action. All the actors in this show are extremely talented protraying the characters. I don't think anything can replace a series like this. Too bad HBO is not in Canada and Soprano's is no longer on Canadian Television, that I have to rely on DVDs. Pure Art!!

GREAT

I love this movie, but then I love Prince. If you don't, then you may find this movie silly and perhaps amateurish. It certainly isn't "Purple Rain." But, the b&w photography is beautiful and so are the locations. I believe this is also Kristin Scott Thomas' first movie and she is very good. Francesca Annis is also wonderful. Prince and Jerome Benton are very funny together and have great chemistry. Unfortunately, Prince looks funny running in high heeled boots, too. (Sorry, but that had to be said.) Anyway, there are much worse movies you could watch so give it a try, if only for the music! (Sometimes it Snows in April is such a sadly unrecognized song! But he is singing it as part of the Musicology tour.) Prince 4ever!

A Kirov Classic Performance!

Every now and then Amazon.com presents us with a mystery like this one(as of this writing). I love mysteries, so I bought it and I was very pleased to see that it is actually one of my favorite Swan Lakes. I was looking to purchase this version on dvd but I was unable to find it--until now. This is the classic Kirov performance featuring Yelena Yevteyeva as Odette/Odile and John Markovsky as Prince Siegfried. These principals give first rate performances in very distinctive styles. Yevteyeva Is very precise and expressive and her Odile is one of my favorites. Markovsky is extremely smooth in his style with great execution: impressive pirouettes and elevation and unmatched partnering technique. The role of Rothbart is portrayed by Makhmud Esambayev and ranks as one of the finest Rothbarts I have seen. The quality of the picture and sound is very good; this is a movie version, so it is at the standard of the time(1968). The color quality is not bad either. Even though I rate this as a classic, since it is bright and colorful, it should be fine for all audiences.

An incrediable film!

Having read the entire Lord of the rings tril. including many of Tolkiens other works, I must say this movie is truely awsome. I am on many peoples side in saying "Hey! That never happened in the book!" or "Wow! That was totally messed up!" but I must agree some of the changes made were for the BETTER! When i say better I don't mean take Gimli's axe an hack up Tolkien's work, but I mean it is for the better of the movie. Tolkien didn't get as into the love story as the movie did, granted, but the love story makes it more appealing for a large audiance. Now people can root for Aragorn cleaving off an Uruk Hai head as much as they can root for him to marry Arwen. Also, I have heard it so many times my head is going to explode. yes we know the elves didn't go to Helm's Deep. And that is perfect for the book, but when you see 10,000 Uruk Hai marching to Helm's Deep and 300 rohan soldiers, which a large portion is old men and children, you gotta wonder how are they ever going to pull this off? Petter Jackson made a good move in my oppion in making the elves go to Helm's Deep for two reasons. I think the non-reader would actually be saying "How did 300 soldiers hold off those Uruk Hai like that?" Rohan needed help, and in order to make the survial look possible, those elves were needed. Also, a overwhelming majority of people love elves, so what better a way that to show them fight at Helm's Deep, looking crisp and ready for action! I believe that Peter Jackson made a smart move there. i will say this though, Aragorn falling off the cliff? That was....weird. On a more comic note, imagine waking up to his horse? Scary huh? But the whole falling off the cliff made it possible to explore the love a little more. Because in the book, it kind of seemed the love theme was diffently out of it, and sort of appeared out of no where in return of the king. Overall I rate this movie very highly and recommend it to anyone. It is hard to juggle waiting till Novemeber to get the special edition or buying the one released. So I say go for the special edition and borrow the one released from a friend.
