Loved it. Worth the long wait.

For the person who wants to learn what the war at sea was about in World War II, there is no better way than to watch these films. Although the films came out in the 1950s, they have more than stood the test of time. The pictures, music and narration are the best ever. If you have been not moved by what happened during those terrible years, these films will certainly do that.
My wife told me she used to watch the TV when she was five years old and was transfixed by them. I cannot think of a better recommendation than that. I even watch these from time to time myself to refresh my memory.

better than the original

This movie takes the few very cool elements of the sixties cult classic with Michael Cain and incorporates them into a breathtaking thriller. The story is a classic heist, but has thief vs. thief betrayal thrown into it. Mark Wahlberg gives a solid performance, Ed Norton once again is superb as the smart and wicked bad guy they go after and unfortunately we see far too little of the wonderful Donald Sutherland. And of course there is the mini-Cooper, the other star of this movie. Like in the sixties original, this swank vehicle (here of course in its new millenium reincarnation) plays a central role in the whole ploy. The special effects and cinematography leave you breathless, the locations are well-picked, this is an edge-of-the-seat wonderfully entertaining flic.

To be cheesy-this movie made me laugh and it made me cry. I personally love Jim Carrey whether he is funny (Liar Liar) or serious (The Magestic) but this was the first time that I saw him as a romantic lead. "I Liked It A Lot." I can't wait until it comes out on video and I am truly looking forward to what Jim Carrey is doing next. Jennifer Aniston was great. I think she's wonderful and Morgan Freeman as God. You don't get much better than this!!! He's got the Power!!!

So where's the DVD???

I was recently strolling through the DVD section of my local Circut City and found Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase's movie "Seem Like Old Times" on DVD. Excited, I jumped over to the "F" section to see if "Foul Play" had been released on DVD... only not to see it there. "Seems..." was a disappointing follow-up movie to me that paired up Chevy and Goldie two years after "Foul Play." I am perplexed as to why "Seems..." is available on DVD format before "Foul Play."
"Foul Play" is one of those movies that just gets better with time. Colin Higgins created one of those films in a Hitchcock manner that shows how "the student can outshine the teacher." The plot is spelled out in many other reviews posted here so I won't do that in my post... just give you a few of the impressions the movie gave me- and continues to give me 25 years later. Few, if any, movies are superior to me in moving seamlessly from a suspense scene to a comedy scene to romantic scene and back to a suspense scene without falling apart and becoming disjointed as "Foul Play." SO many funny scenes and phrases that stick with me today... "Beware the dwarf," "I gotta go warm up the... uh... weenies," Nobody messes with Stella unless Stella wants to be messed," "That was one tough mama!," "Far out," "Bang, bang Kojack"... the list just goes on and on. How many films can you really say that about?
The movie has one of those casts with a chemistry that you couldn't imagine anyone else being cast in their place. Goldie and Chevy interact as if this was their 100th movie together, not their first. Dudley Moore, Rachel Roberts, Bruce Soloman, and Burgess Meredith, and everyone else whose names I can't remember or don't know... perfect, perfect, perfect in their respective roles... and Barry Manilow, at the height of his career, singing the theme song. How many car chases have been filmed in San Francisco?? This car chase out does them all! It just doesn't get better than this.
"Foul Play" is the reason people go to see movies and how movies should be made. My idea?? Any aspiring film-maker shoudl be required to watch and discuss this movie in film class! <heh heh> In general, comedies always play second rank to the serious films when being ranked for influence and greatness. "Foul Play," however, deserves the title of "classic" in its own right. It is truly that great a film to me. If you haven't seen this movie, run, don't walk to your local video store and hope they have the VHS edition available. An evening home with an imaginative, first-class, blue ribbon, and Oscar-worthy best director, best actor, best actress, best screenplay, best cinematography, best movie (whew!- heh heh) movie- can't get better than "Foul Play."

Love Actually

I just got home from watching this brilliant movie. I took my 12 year old daughter and even though there were several nude scenes, I was never embarassed to have her setting next to me. This movie was not your typical hollywood boy meets girl flick. This film showed you several sides of LOVE. The love between a parent and child, love between siblings, old love, new love, love from afar, and love without words, for love is truly the international language. I laughed , I cried, but most of all I LOVED while I watched, and as the movie ended I saw I was not alone. People were smiling, holding hands, and in an all around better mood for having been there. I would highly recomend ACTUALLY falling in LOVE with it too!!
