Get this movie!

Like most of his movies, arnold only has about 10 lines through the whole thing, but each one is quotable and priceless. I can watch this movie every day. If you have ever liked any of his movies, this is a must own. The commentary by him is quite amusing. The few deleted scenes actually show Arnold doing more than flexing, the scenes should have been kept in. The goal of a movie should be to entertain, and that is what this movie does quite well. My favorite DVD.

The Jury

First of all you must know that English is not my first language. But it was very clear and easy to understand , even so it has no subtitles in Spanish. The plot is very good and showed me many aspects of England. And also I``m a great fan of Gerard Butler , who is such a marvellous actor. But all actors in the Jury are very good and I recommended it to all my friends. But they will have to buy their own DVD in amazon, because I wouldn``t part with mine!

Could have been a bomb, but it's suprisingly good

I think this movie is really good, especially if you take interest in how movies are made. The DVD is a very good special edition. Sure it doesn't break new ground or have fancy Ghostbuster-type menus, but content is what counts in the end, and this DVD delivers. Commentary track, documentary, outtakes, etc. Worth the money.

Yet another James Cameron epic restored

There's one thing I've come to expect from movies scripted and directed by James Cameron: when you see the finished product on the big screen, you're not likely to be viewing everything that was filmed. 'The Abyss' is one of three Cameron movies (The others being 'Aliens' and 'Terminator 2') that have been released in Special Edition format. In this case, nearly a half-hour of scenes that were cut from the theatrical release have been restored.
When I first viewed the Special Edition version, many of the restored moments blended in with the movie so well that there were times I didn't realize that I was watching new scenes. The big exception to this was near the end, where an entire subplot in the story is restored. I won't ruin it for anyone else by disclosing details... you'll have to see it for yourself. The only thing I'll say about it is, I feel that the Special Edition ending is not as abrupt or as confusing as the original ending.
I've owned 'The Abyss' Special Edition on VHS, but when I checked it out on DVD, there was no comparison. I was in complete awe. I've not yet seen any other DVD movie that has nearly as many extra features as this 2-disc set does. In the first one, you can choose to view either the theatrical release or special edition version of the film. But as cool as that is, it's the second disc that sealed the deal for me.
Platter number 2 contains two 'making of' documentaries, three trailers, details and descriptions about the various equipment and vehicles in the movie, several drafts of the script, storyboards, behind-the-scenes stills, cast and crew filmographies, and an endless array of other things that can entertain a movie buff for hours without ever actually watching the movie itself. I wouldn't be surprised if this set becomes required viewing for film students, since it has so much information about how 'The Abyss' was made, the methods used to produce it, and so much more.
But, even with all of this, I have just one fairly insignificant gripe about this DVD. There's one moment, about an hour into the movie, that pauses for about a half a second before cutting to the next scene. This occurs when viewing either version of the flick. Yeah, I know... big whoop-de-doo...

Important Film

"Glory", is a historically-based film about the formation of the all-black 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry during this nation's Civil War. The film draws on a variety of sources but it should not be taken as historically perfect, and for serious students of The Civil War the film will be less satisfying. A quick example is the engagement at Antietam. This battle of the war was the single bloodiest in this nation's history; the film gives no information that will leave you better informed about this fact than prior to your viewing it. Antietam was also what many view as a missed opportunity for shortening the war, and if it is to be used in a film it is too important too be used lightly.
The story of the volunteer 54th Regiment from Massachusetts is a remarkable one, for all who were a part of this group took additional risks above and beyond that of other soldiers. The Confederacy made its view clear on what would happen to blacks fighting in uniform, and equally clear as to what fate awaited the white soldiers that were part of the regiment as well.
The movie is filled with great performances by Morgan Freeman, Matthew Broderick, and Denzel Washington, who won an Academy Award for his performance as Best Supporting Actor. The list of additional solid performances is lengthy and ensures the longevity of this film's popularity.
It would be the better part of a century before the armed forces of this nation would finally be integrated, and this would only come after non-white soldiers had fought with the same level of pride, determination and distinction as their white counterparts. Certain groups, like The Tuskegee Airmen of World War II fame, would set performance standards that were the envy of any combat flying force in history. And yet as they flew and died for their country, the same country allowed German prisoners of war more freedom, and more respect and privileges than it did these brave men.
About 50% of the 54th died in a single engagement in South Carolina during an attempt to take Fort Wagner. The assault could reasonably be called one of calculated suicide, and the 50% dead validates that idea. As another author termed it, "One Gallant Rush", demonstrated not only what type of men these were, but that whether they were black or white they took upon themselves a frontal assault of the fort, and fought and died together. It was a historical event, but their place in history was affirmed before they made that final attack as a group.

Hondo - a study of a man torn between two worlds

I found this movie too be a good character study for the duke. It made a conserted try at bridging the gap between the white/settlers vs. the native americans/plains indians on how they related on a one to one basis instead of the enmasse scenarios which usually occupy the screen. It made for a more entaining surprise that what was available for the times in the treatment of our native americans. I highly recommend it for its simple format and good character study over any of the fight scenes that were shown. A fine simple approach which is missing from the current lot of movies.

Cops R Cops

This is the premiere example of how police officers, regardless of what level, be it municipal, state or federal, bond and build relationships that may be all that they have to rely on between live and death. That the movie is set is LA is perfect. Total and modern decadence and being teasury agents that chase "funny" money fuels the fire. And fire is a major theme as well. The bonus of seeing three excellent character actors hone their craft, unrescrictedly, is a tribute to Friedkin as a director. Pacing is well done, and the action only breaks long enough to catch one's breath before the next jolt of excitement. The secondary characters are well acted as well. None of the actors overshadow the characters that weave the story to a splendidly, twisted ending, especially for a hollywood movie. Good enough to watch several times.

This movie is awesome. John Robinson is awesome as stacy pertalta. Heath Ledger portrayal of Skip Engblom is perfection. The scenery and camera angles were a great backdrop for the film and the soundtrack makes this movie absolutely perfect.
