Keith Jarrett - Last Solo - movie DVD cover picture
Looking at a genius at work

Although I very much admire Keith Jarrett's volume of work in performing solo improvisational piano concerts, I have never had the opportunity to see him in person. This DVD is, I suppose, the next best thing. When Jarrett plays, he does not sit passively at the keyboard. Instead, he literally throws his entire body into the effort, alternately standing and sitting and sometimes nearly crouching, his expression an ever-changing mask of fierce engagment with the music he is making. This DVD is a remarkable look at a remarkable musician.

The Ultimate Keepsake!!

I was lucky enough to attend this show when it happened Live in Chicago! It was easily the greatest concert I have ever been to. It's a very rare occasion to be able to actually own a high-quality video of a concert that you were at- so of course I bought this DVD right away! It was everything I could have hoped for and more. Shania is the epidome of a performer. She owns that stage and her presence is astonishing. She sang every hit you could want to hear plus all her amazing new songs off her latest CD, "Up!" I highly reccommend this DVD for any and every Shania fan out there!!!

Instrument - Ten Years with the Band Fugazi - movie DVD cover picture

This is a fascinating documentary.
It's well edited and evenly paced.
Fugazi is poetry. Fugazi is minimalism with movement that spans emotions and time, and this DVD successfully captures that elusive mood.
Don't expect to sit down with this DVD and do anything other than absorb words and music, the ideas and discord. I was enthralled.
This documentary has an appeal, regardless of your musical orientation. If you appreciate the creation of music, this will be of interest.
I highly recommend this intriguing production.

What is wrong with you, people?

I have to say I LOVED this movie. It was very refreshing. I am someone who has spent 15 years working with children with special needs and has seen the problems regarding acceptance of the situation (having an "atypical" child) - especially from fathers -, which was accurately depicted in this movie. I enjoyed seeing the culture of "little people" as a minority group in our "oh-so-obsessed-with-our-looks" society. Yes, the characters were somewhat over-simplified in some instances but it didn't take away from the charm of this nice little movie. I felt that the actors made the best out of their roles (especially Gary Oldman, oh, man!). I would highly recommend this movie to anyone looking for something different from the usual "mainstream" movies.

Drew Barrymore excellently portrays Cinderella!

One of my favorite movies is now Ever After! Instead of this one seeming like a kid's movie, anyone can enjoy this. The characters and story are astonishingly believable! This movie has it all. Action, romance, comedy & drama. I love the way Drew Barrymore kicks butt in this film!

Now HEAR THIS-Best of Elmo DVD Rocks !!!!

My title is in response to the several criticisms lodged against the DVD on its lack of audio quality. Audio quality?!? I have an 18th month old who LOVES Elmo, and of course, this video is one of her favorites. And mine too-for several reasons. I actually like the fact it is "short and sweet" (in fact, I am purchasing Favorite Song DVD for that exact reason)-there are times when I don't want her or us to sit in front of the TV (or computer monitor as in our case) for 45-50 mins. Sometimes, we are both in the mood for a concise, entertaining, educational, fun video-and that exactly what it delivers. I have never noticed the poor audio I have to admit. Plus, to me, the main reason I pay...extra...for a Sesame Street because I don't have to constantly rewind it. I don't expect SONY to make drastic improvements. Sesame Street was always about quality of material, not cutting edge technology. Also, DVDs have a much higher resale value which is another reason to buy it. I have to say that I am somewhat upset by all of the critics. Let your kids decide if they like it-I'm pretty sure they will!

Centennial - movie DVD cover picture
"So good that I went looking for the town!!"

The story of the American West doesn't get any better than this! As a middle school social studies instructor, I can say that Americana is on display in its most enticing format here! The acting is as superb as the actors are familiar! Star after star makes us forget whatever role they played on televison, and remember them for their characterization in Centennial! This is the highest compliment to a film-maker's casting director and producer!
The cast IS exceptional--especially Conrad, Chamberlain, and that old Detroit lineman Alex 'Brumbaugh' Karas! Honestly, having seen this epic four times, I have often wanted to just sit right through all 20+ hours consecutively; it really does grow on you! I can never forget the 'Wendells' every time I hear 'Whispering Hope', and just watching that last half hour's flashback sequence accompanied by 'Guess He'd Rather be in Colorado' still gives me goose bumps! I enjoyed this epic so much in fact, that while in Colorado in 1993, I tried to locate the town of Centennial. I noticed many familiar landmarks, crossed the Platte River, but of course, found no Centennial town--only the cafe.
I can only say that if one loves the history and drama of the American West and has not seen this chronicle from Robert Conrad's trip downstream at the beginning, to David Janson's reflective retrospection by the lonely railroad tracks at the consclusion, one has NOT fully seized upon all that Hollywood can contribute to learning about our great country.
Thank you Clay Basket, Levi Zendt, Hans Brumbaugh, R.J. Poteet, Lame Beaver...though fictitious, you made learning come alive for us! And a special thanks to the production company of 'Centennial'!
"...only the rocks live forever".

One of my Top Five

A fine script and foncused direction from Altman keeps the viewer tense with anticapation. Tim Robbins turns in yet another home run career performance. Great camera work. Allow yourself several viewings of this fine film. Bravo!

DVD is a winner

Although I prefer the truman show over edtv comparing DVDs is a no brainer. You get so much more here. Two audio commentaries, deleted scenes, a making of featurrette, and some other tidbits.I still feel that this movie is a real sick look at societies obsession with television and this dvd reinforces this viewpoint. The extra features really make this movie a treasure for any collection.
