Life As A Sport

This is not Oliver Stone's best movie, it is full of cliches, it is totally macho and often stereotypic, it is often pretentious in the way it is filmed.
But if you ever poured your heart out into anything, if you ever fought for something through pain, disillusion and disappointment, if you ever put on cleats, or skates or basketball shoes or anything to go out with a bunch of guys and win a game this movie will touch you deeply.
I guess you can always see the movie through the relatively simple plot but try instead to loose the perspective of a spectator and imagine yourself as one of those characters: the disillusioned coach who somehow fights through the emotional pain while it seems that there's nothing there left to keep him going, the ambitious, hotheaded and cynical thirdstring quarterback who wants to take on anybody and anything, the beleagured owner in the shadow of her father. If you can do that the film will be a rewarding emotional experience - if you can't it will be a somewhat old sports flick starring Pacino.
It is easiest to understand the movie if you were ever involved in competitive sports but trust Pacino when he says that the game of football is just like life - or rather what life was supposed to be about. Try exploring the parallels between football and life - think of your job, your company, etc.
If nothing else, listen to the coach's halftime speech towards the end of the movie.

A MUST FOR ALL ELECTRONIC MUSIC FANS

This video isn't perfect but it's the best so far in covering the entire spectrum of electronic dance music. It goes so far as to actually showing the Roland keyboard factory! There's multiple interviews with legendary pioneers from decades ago along with today's new artists. There's coverage of Love Parade in Berlin and various other raves. Just about every style of dance music is represented. Drum and Bass and House probably got the most attention. It breaks down to the smallest components of electronic music and how artists get and arrange samples. It's a great introduction to electronic music for those who don't quite understand it yet and a great history lesson to those of use who already love it.

Les Miserables

Les Miserables. This is the one of the greats, but really greats, musicals that have ever been made. Every single song, every orchestred note, every word, every "personagem" holds a world in itself (try felling Javert's paper). And at this production, particulally, there is an extraordinary kind of "restricted interpetration" by each one of the singer-actors(actress); they have to do all their papers with only their voices and faces... their bodys are likelly attached by a standing microphone in front of them. But, although this pecluiarity, their performances are remarkable... there is so much beauty in this show; Ruthie Henshall is everything! So, if you like really great music, performed by extreme competent singers-actors, buy it. You really don't have to think twice.

One of the best seasons

While I only saw a few episodes of Futurama on TV, they were enough that I knew I had to get the boxset. So when Vol. 1 came out a few years back, I picked it up. And every year since then, like clock work, I've bought the new one on the release day. This past time, however, was tinged with sadness, as it looks like Futurama has expired like the dinosaurs.

This was one of the funniest seasons (with season two being the only vaugly disappointing season) and the season where the writers really let loose with some off the wall episodes.

One of the hilights of past season boxsets were the audio commentaries. This last season is no different. The commentaries are simultaniously funny, informative, and feel rather like a party sans the balloons.

Enjoy.
