Lee and Ditko would be proud

This is not as much Sam Raimi's movie, nor Tobey Maguire's nor Kirsten Dunst's as it is a movie embodying the spirits of Stan Lee and Steve Ditko - the guys who created Spidey in the first place.
A surprise is this film is actually quite complex when it comes to human emotions and motivations. No one does anything without some reason (or something they truly believe is a reason), and in Spider-Man each person has their own set of complexity. The acting is excellent, particularly the scenes between Maguire and Dunst. J.K. Simmons as 'Daily Bugle' (the Flatiron Building) editor J. Jonah Jameson is truly terrifying in a bad-boss way. All the usual suspects are present; the bullying jock, the girl next door, and Aunt May. There is humor, and in a display of skill this humor grows naturally out of the situations, and does not feel forced.
The action sequences are dynamic - to say the least. Lee and Ditko imagined Spidey web-swinging across New York City at great speed. They must be delighted in seeing Maguire (who did at least some of his own stunts) bring Spidey's speed and agility to the screen.
Some may complain that parts of the film are slow (like the lead-up to the infamous spider-bite), but taken in the context that Spider-Man 2 and 3 are already in the works, we may well look back on the 'slow' scenes as a good place to catch one's breath. The only true problem is the Green Goblin mask. (I hated it in the spy photos, thru production, and especially right up there on the screen.) Other than that mask, this is a film that rocks hard and fast any time someone in costume is on screen, and seethes with intrigue when the characters are in mufti.
All in all, an excellently realised film. Some very young viewers may be startled by the action sequences.

The Last Days of Disco - movie DVD cover picture
One of my favorite films from 1998

Director and writer Walt Stillman is on a short list of talented film makers who seem to make movies only when they want to. Stiller is forty-eight years old. Besides "The Last Days of Disco", he has done just two other movies - "Metropolitan" in 1990 and "Barcelona" in 1994. Whatever else he does in life must be enlightening to him. Otherwise, his film work would not be so insightful, unique and well crafted.
People like Stillman usually have another trait. They tend to explore only a very small segment of society. In his case, it is an ongoing study of upper middle-class young adults who grown up in and around New York City. Because he makes so few movies, he is in no danger of exhausting his subject matter. In fact, those who like his work can hardly wait for the next installment.
He is a gifted craftsman. He writes about his characters with a cool detachment, allowing the viewers to form their own opinions. He is a master of dialog. He successfully pulls off a difficult genre known as the comedy of manners. His humor is so cool and dry that I usually find my brain running about five seconds behind what is happening on the screen. I catch myself wanting to talk back to the characters. This, I think, is a compliment, because it indicates becoming very involved with the story.
In "Metropolitan", Stillman's award-winning first effort, we were treated to a ritual most of us presumed was dead. The film was about the trials and tribulations of The Coming Out Ball, as in the High Society type. "Barcelona" showed a group of young New Yorkers as they tried, unsuccessfully, to apply their standards to those of Spanish society. "The Last Days of Disco" takes place in Manhattan in the early 1980s. The decline of the disco culture is secondary here to an overall change in social values that was then sweeping the country.
The cast is uniformly excellent. While none of them are especially well known, you can expect that to change for several of them. One actor, Christopher Eigerman, has appeared in all three films. This film also makes several references to the city of Barcelona. Stillman has essentially made a movie trilogy, although each film can be enjoyed independently.
I don't think you need to have much knowledge of New York to relate to the characters and the story. Exploring one's limits and seeking one's place in the world are universal pursuits.
As I said, dialog is at the forefront in "The Last Days of Disco". For example, Chloe Sevigney and Kate Beckinsale play Alice and Charlotte, two roommate who could not be more different. At one point the rather icy Charlotte pushes the much warmer Alice too far. Alice walks out of the apartment, and Chloe realizes she must make amends. So, running into the hall, she gives her best shot at an apology. "Listen! What I said that was wrong, I apologize for!", she shouts. She hesitates a moment. Unable to face complete humility, she follows with, "And what I said that wasn't wrong, I don't apology for!".
Walt Stillman has created another urbane and sophisticated work.

Worth Buying And Watching

"Secondhand Lions" is one of those movies like "A Christmas Story". If you were lucky enough to catch it in theaters, you passed the word along that this was worth the time to see. Like "A Christmas Story", more audiences will discover how good it is by catching it on cable.

It's still worth investing in the DVD, as there is something for everyone. For kids, it's safe for them to watch it on their own (although the language may be a bit rough in spots, but Duvall and Caine are playing old Texas boys, so Emily Post is out). For movie buffs, there's side by side comparison of Script to Screen. For those who want to see what didn't make it to the screen, there's alternate and deleted scenes (including one sight gag involving Walter's imagining breakfast with his two uncles - I'll say no more).

Best of all, director Tim McCanlies audio commentary is insightful and smart. Unlike other DVD audio, where the director and stars end up saying "That scene was a lot of fun to do" over and over when they run out of things to say about 30 minutes into the movie, McCanlies's film is such a labor of love that what he says keeps your interest. I don't know if McCanlies will become a millionaire out of this movie, but this film will be seeing a lot of viewing time on TV and DVD long after the summer blockbusters end up in the remainder bin of your local video outlet.

Brilliant, life-affirming film.

Compare and contrast with Hemingway's "The Short, Happy Life of Francis Macomber." The man with no debts and no assets is a free man. Kevin Spacey is impossibly brilliant in his role.

A great european film

I saw this movie when it just came out in theatres and many of my friends right away started talking about how this is another european movie that doesnt make sense. Well, they were surprised to see how great this movie is. It's packed with action through the martial-arts of Mark Dacascos and Samuel Le Bihan (the two main characters of the movie), it's packed with drama and suspense-all of which, with the story, make Brotherhood of the Wolf a great movie to watch for potentially all viewers who basically enjoy fun movies (such as this one)!!!

WATCH IT! THIS IS THE THING! HE'S REALLY BACK!!! YAHOO!!

...All I can say about this effort is that True Lies II had better be a whole heap better than this. I don't want ever to go to a cinema and watch an audience file out in stupified silence like I did yesterday. It was sort of clear that something was very, very wrong when a (large) bunch of teenagers filed out two thirds through, but at the actual end, when the titles came up, I swear I have never seen a more fed up bunch of folks in my life, ever.
This isn't my opinion exactly. I probably WILL get the 3/4 disc special edition when it comes out, like everybody else. But I promise you that those kids DID trail out and the audience was utterly flat. Doesn't matter what I think....!

This movie is wonderfull!

I loved the the Fellowship and this movie was a spectaculair sequal. I really didn't think they could make Legolas or Aragorn or anyone else any better, but they did! I've seen it three times and plan to see it again and again! And "Smeegle" (my apologies to those who know how to spell it) was so cute! I loved him! Sure, he was evil at times, but really, he was a charming creature. I have never read the books, so I'm don't care if they changed anything. As someone who saw just the movies, this was the best movie ever! I'm not saying it's better but it's just as good as the first one and we all know how great that was. I mean, who didn't cheer when the elves marched to help Theoden? (And yes, I do know that didn't happen in the book) Please! Go! If you adored the first movie, you will love this one as well!

Fantastic Romantic Comedy!

When I first saw Love Actually, i totally loved it. And since my first time, I watched it several times, again and again. In my opinion, it definitely is the most romantic comedy of all times. I usually watch it when I'm feeling a bit down, and I must say it is a great movie for such situations. It features several stories. You have a prime-minister's story (Hugh Grant) who's falls in love with his house-help girl. Then a story about Brittish guy, who travells to America in order to get American girls who love Brittish accent (also with Elisha Cuthbert). Then about a man who's wife cheated on him, so he went to France and met a Portuguesse girl. Then, a youun boy who's in loved with a girl from school, and his father who is mourning after his wife. Also a story about two co-workers who finally get together, but this doesn't work because she has a sick brother. Next is the story of a married couple and the man starts flirting with his secretary. There's also a story about a couple who has met during filming an erotic movie. And there is also a story about a newlyweds and a guy's friend who is in loved with his wife (Keira Knightley). And all of this stories and characters are somehow connected to others. A great movie overall. If you love romance, you'll love it.
