The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - Vol. 1: (A Scandal in Bohemia/ The Dancing Men/ The Naval Treaty/ The Solitary Cyclist) - movie DVD cover picture
Leaves you wanting more!

What a wonderful adaptation of Sherlock! I have been a Holmes fan for years, from the first paperback I bought in high school to the annoted hardbacks detailing the great detectives works I now have in my library. This series is brilliant! The quality of acting, direction and dialogue is superb!
Jeremy Brett will make you believe he actually is Sherlock! David Burke is the perfect Watson. The scenery and the settings are beautifully conceived! The attention to detail is so amazing, I believe Holmes himself would have approved.
Each story is a carefully woven tapestry of drama and intrigue. The relationship between Holmes and Watson so vivid and endearing, with the subtle touch of humor good friends often share.
The only downside is I find myself impatiently waiting for the next release from the same series.

Awesome!!! Totally Awesome!

You got two, rare cannibal flicks for the price of half of one in a one case DVD!!!! Deranged, the better of the two, is the tale of Ezra Cobb, based off Ed Gein, who "geins" a little sexual fetish for the opposite sex after his mother dies...and it all turns out to be a grave robbing, necrophilliac nightmare! Motel Hell is the tale of a fat, sweaty, ugly cow named Ida and her tall, anorexic, ugly brother Vincent who kill people and put them in their special recipe food....moohaha. MGM rocks!

I loved this movie!

I loved this move! And the soundtrack is fantastic!Being a harsh critic myself, I was somewhat surprised to see all of the negative (1 star reviews). Whatever...
If you're a Lucy Liu fan and enjoy non-cerebral action movies with great music, well then perhaps you will be one of the few (like me) who saw it twice and want to see it again.
If you want to get the music CD, go for the "original score" version. It's better than the "soundtrack" version.

Frank Herbert's Dune (TV Miniseries) (Director's Cut Special Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
One of the best Sci-Fi's out there.

"Diehard" sci-fi fans will always inevitably make a comparison to the original dune book by Frank Herbert. The book spans some three hundred something pages, and to fit the intricacies of a novel of this length and detail into a mini-series is impossible; the comparison between the tv mini-series and the book, even, is a pointless one. With each transfer to a different medium, you lose details and you gain others, since each medium has its unique idiosyncrasies. Therefore, it seems to me a mistake to judge the mini-series or even the movie in comparison to the book, and makes even more sense to judge it independently within the context of each medium. If any comparison can be made is that this mini-series adequately preserves the human element and its metaphoric parallel relevance to our own time of environmental degradation, political intrigue and corruption, lifestyle dependence on finite natural resources, and spirituality as the original book intended. Some might even consider it "injustice" to the book, that some details of fremen rituals or political "feints within feints within feints within feints" were excluded. I might even suggest that for the medium, and the time allowed, these scenes, although relevant, are not necessarily needed. The directors of the mini-series have done a wonderful job adapting the book to the screen. If you judge this series for what it is, and not how exacting it fits into the book, you will derive much more enjoyment and meaning from herbert's intentions, than if you nitpick. :-)

Edward Norton At His Best

I absolutley loved this movie and was very moved by it. I do admit however that I think it is only because of Norton. This movie is brutal at times and laden with profanity....not for the faint of heart. It also serves as a great example of the power of brainwashing and redemption.

A Date Movie For Guys

The film is honest and hilarious. I've always enjoyed John Cusack's work all the way back to Better Off Dead and One Crazy Summer. There is something always charming about him even when he plays a complete jerk as he does here. I wouldn't say his character, Rob Gordon, is a typical man but he is one type of man. The director, Stephen Frears, shows him warts and all. Cusack's honest performance keeps Rob from being totally unsympathetic. His monologues hit the truth so many times I was actually astounded. Agree or disagree with what he says but you can't deny there is more than a little truth there. While everyone involved does a great job, this film rides completely on John Cusack's performance.
It amazes me how many reviews here talk about how much they identify with this film and I'm no exception. I've known record store geeks like Jack Black and Todd Louiso's characters. I've spent nights in bars having the same juvenile conversations on pop culture. I also like the constant references to the Clash as being one of the all time great bands.
The way Rob matures through the film is well handled and realistic. There is no blatant attempt to manipulate emotions or any sudden, sappy epiphany. When Rob finally tells his girlfriend he's ready for a real relationship it's a pleasant suprise. Right up to that point you're still not sure he'll do the right thing.
I was wowed by this movie and can't say enough good things about it.
