The Ref - movie DVD cover picture
Leary fans rejoice!

Denis... ah, you whimsical angry poet. He's at his best in this one, folks! A burglar (and a good one) forced into taking hostages in order to escape a slightly botched robbery, finds himself held hostage by his prey! In his own words, "I've kidnapped my parents!" This was also before Kevin Spacey was REALLY famous, too, so you know there's some good acting involved. Not all around, I will admit, the son is a bit tenuous and immature. Some of the characters a little dry, but that actually changes later in the movie. The star, of course, is Denis. Riding close behind him, though, are Spacey and Judy Davis, the bickering couple Leary is stuck with.
Spacey and Davis play off each other beautifully in this film, as a couple in DESPERATE need of marriage counseling. They have both lost sight of why they married in the first place, are stuck in life-ruts, and are considering a divorce. Then, Leary steps in and the fur starts to fly. I can't say too much without giving it away, but it's a witty and slightly warm movie about rediscovery and redemption. After all, it is Christmastime! Oh, and that element adds to the humor value, by the way.
If you are a Leary fan, no question, just buy it. If you are a comedy fan, same thing. If you like Spacey, while his part isn't the biggest in the film, he really shines as usual, so again... buy it. ;-) I recommend it all around! Especially if you've 'been there' on the holidays with 'the family' (you know what I mean). :-)

Live Aid (4 Disc Set) - movie DVD cover picture
As good as it will probably get

I snapped up this item as soon as I saw it on sale! This was, and is, the concert event of a lifetime. There have been a few attempts to do something similar to this over the years, but none have reached the scale or success as Live Aid.

When I observed that the length was 10 hours, I knew that some compromises had to be made as to who to include, and who to ignore. I had just graduated from high school in 1985 and remember running VHS tapes from 6 in the morning (to catch the Australia footage) to well past 10 that night...almost 17 hours' worth of footage. I still have those tapes and can shed some light on the Zep story.

True that the Zep set is missing; true that Plant and Page refused to let it be included; also true is that it was not a quality performance by any objective measure. Jimmy Page was obviously well-stoned by the time he got out there, and the interaction between Phil Collins and ex-Chic drummer Tony Thompson (NOT Jason Bohnam as an earlier viewer implied) was sporadic at best.

Others key moments were left out as well. The Thompson Twins' "Hold Me Now" and "Doctor Doctor" was left off, as was Duran Duran's "View To a Kill. However, it would have required another 2 discs to do the whole program, and the sheer amout of stuff that is there is more than worth the price of the package!

As to why it took this long to get this in some format or another, Bob Geldof opposed releasing it until now saying that the show was best left in people's memory. I vehemently disagree! This was well overdue, and hopefully the $ raised will be put to good use.

Unfortunately, much of the original funds from the concerts bought aid that ended up being diverted by corrupt African regimes to their own pockets. We can only hope that won't happen this time around

Hanson rocking the Fillmore

I was actually in attendance at this concert, in addition to owning the DVD. I've seen hundreds of bands live, and Hanson has been the most intense. The passion they exert while playing their music is breathtaking, even though at the show itself it was kind of hard for me to get a great view of them playing since I was being squished in between screaming girls.Hanson's three part harmony over their catchy and mostly upbeat pop-rock music (which they wrote themselves) is so much more real than all the other pop that was coming out at around this time. The only problem I have with this DVD is how they keep cutting to the really young girls singing along to the songs and making fools of themselves... I remember the girls around me looking much older than those girls, and I really could have done without those shots included constantly. Hanson themselves should have been the sole focus.Hanson are born musicians, great songwriters, and I wish people would take them seriously instead of associating them with MMMBop because they have matured and really have great talent to offer the world.

I Spit on Your Grave (Millennium Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
A Film Obviously Created By A True Humanitarian

Allow me to get one thing off my back immediately: those people who consider this film exploitive are living well outside of reality. Scumbags like the ones portrayed in this movie exist, and, sadly enough, traumatic and horrific experiences such as the ones depicted herein do occur in real life. If you find trouble accepting the violence of this movie, than I suggest getting your head out of Mickey Mouse's a**, because these bastards are out there (although most are out of view and directing Hollywood films these days)
Sure, it does have it's faults, which is only usual for such low-budget fare. But we horror buffs are more willing than others to accept these 'mistakes' as an acceptable and perhaps necessary ingredient to a good horror film. Take, for instance, the segments where the sound is cut off for no apparent reason, or the poor voice overs in others (the rape scenes are a good example). Speaking of which, the scenes depicting rape are about as realistic as movie slugfights are in real life, so I don't see what the big fuss is over. There is nothing 'tasteless' about it, unless a beautiful woman running around naked through the woods strikes you as tasteless. One has to assume the observatory stance of anthropologist studying caveman behavior in some parts, true, but it's a simplicity that is needed to portray the basest and most primal human instincts.
The ending is purgation exemplified, as our heroine, once gained clearance from God at a local church, enacts her revenge through some exceptionally cruel (and seductive) means, inexorably until each and every grave is sufficiently 'spat upon.'
Overall, a great movie: the setting is beautiful and the characters, though exaggerated, believable. All making for a classic horror experience that is not to be missed. Rent it immediately or drown forever in Disney psychosis!

A Lesson Before Dying - movie DVD cover picture
Deals With Issues Much Deeper That Skin Color

I missed the first few minutes of this film, so I watched the rest not knowing if the convicted man was guilty. By the end of the film, it was no longer an issue...The same appeared to happen with the racial issues presented. The open demoralizing of the blacks (by the whites) was soon overshadowed by the more personal issues of spirituality and self-esteem. One of Cheadle's finer performances, in my opinion, with equally impressive supporting performances.
This is a wonderful film, with a "Lesson" or two for us all.

This Copy Is The Best

What's not mentioned on the cover or in any of these other reviews is that this copy must have been transfered by or remastered from the original negative. I've never seen this film look so good except for when i first saw it on T.V. back in the 70's. Everthing is better, The sound, The picture, The action, And i think even the plot is made better by this upgrade. If you already own one of those other copies of this movie, Buy this one, You wont be disapointed.

Patch Adams - DTS - movie DVD cover picture
A good message

Patch Adams may have had cliches, may have been a bit too feel-good, and may have had too many predictable and/or one-dimentional characters. However, the message of the movie comes across loud and clear. That is, in the midst of all the hustle and bustle of life, we humans lose sight of our most basic need: love. As Patch loved his fellow humans, he received the love he needed to make his life worth living. And I loved the comparison of Karin's death to a caterpillar's metamorphosis into a butterfly. Being a butterfly lover and a believer in heaven, it was a beautiful metaphor. I give this movie five stars because the theme is so necessary for everyone to understand.
