Fleetwood Mac in Concert- Mirage Tour '82 - movie DVD cover picture
The DVD Picture Cover is the Only Mirage

Like the other people are saying the picture is wrong but as for the concert, it is top notch. Stevie is unlike anything else as far as released DVDs go.
In this one she is all over the stage and truly earns the title "Rock 'n Roll Ballerina" The high kick at the end of Rhiannon is great and the end of SotM is emotionally packed. Christine looks stunning, as always, and has the coolest red boots ever. Her songs are always 'perfect' sounding. Lindsey has a funny little hat on the whole time, it's great. John and Mick are there too, of course and sound great. The only thing that I would say hurts this DVD is if you turn on the sub-titles or captions. Maybe where it was made in Brazil or something but on a few parts they don't match the actual words. If you have the extra cash, buy this DVD, it's worth every penny.

Riveting!

This movie brought back memories of my teen years and the joy I had as a youth. But really what brought home the timelessness of this Motown era is my childrens' reaction to the movie. They formed their groups and they sang "My Girl", "Ain't to Proud to Beg". They had to have more--any books, videos, or cd's that helped them hear and learn more about The Temptations. We shared many hours or singing their songs while driving somewhere. When I listen to these oldies, especially, they do not make fun of "my" music; It's another thing we can share. We first saw it on TV. I bought the video. We saw it on cable. The only thing that frustrates my is that there are scenes on the cable version that are not on the video version. Ricky Fante is listed in the credits as "Marvin Gaye" but I have not found any scene with him in it. So, that makes me think there was more filmed but it was cut in the TV and video. I would have liked to see the uncut version. We still love the film and look at it from time to time.

10th Anniversary Package Makes Superb Movie Soar Even Higher

I will always remember those tense three days in April 1970 when the Apollo 13 astronauts seemed suspended in space, and this was well before the days of 24-hour coverage by CNN and Fox. For those who have yet to purchase this movie on DVD, the tenth anniversary two-disc set is a must-have for any adventure film-lover, especially for those like myself who were obsessed with the nation's space program in the 1960's and early 70's. Ron Howard, the director, came of age with this thrilling recreation of the aborted Apollo 13 mission, as defining a moment in NASA's history as the tragic Challenger explosion. The 1995 movie was a faithful depiction of what went wrong with the flight and how the mission changed dramatically to one of saving the three astronauts from being marooned in space forever. One would think that knowing the ending would rob the viewer of the suspense factor, but Howard does an amazing job in making the story feel fresh by guiding us through the heroic acts both in the capsule and at NASA's Mission Control in vividly realistic detail. He also evokes the atmosphere back then with emotional and visual accuracy, showing how anti-climactic the mission was perceived in light of Neil Armstrong's first steps on the moon just the year prior. A rupture in the oxygen tank changed things completely as the movie illustrates a desperate attempt at survival with computer systems turned off, the capsule moving toward freezing temperatures and the three men relying on their gut instincts to maneuver the capsule home.

What I appreciate most about the movie is that Howard does not derail the basic story with unnecessary subplots or flourishes of melodrama. He realizes the real story is more than enough to engage the viewer and that the attention to detail, often technical in nature, is not off-putting. Howard even creates blood-pumping suspense out of the ground effort to jerry-build a scrubber to clean carbon dioxide from the capsule's air supply. This kind of film is all in the details, even the more predictable home scenes where family members try to confront their increasing sense of fear. The movie has a solid testosterone-heavy cast - Tom Hanks stalwart as always as Apollo 13 commander Jim Lovell; Bill Paxton as Fred Haise; Kevin Bacon as last-minute substitute Jack Swigert; Ed Harris as determined flight director Gene Kranz; Gary Sinise as grounded astronaut Ken Mattingly; and bravely leading the homefront is Kathleen Quinlan as Lovell's wife, Marilyn. Even though the move is full of familiar suspense elements and the characters' interactions are often just officious, there is hardly a wasted dramatic moment in the entire film, pretty impressive given its 140-minute running time. This is a superbly done real-life adventure film and docudrama and aside from Philip Kaufman's 1983 adaptation of Tom Wolfe's "The Right Stuff", probably the best movie about the space program.

The smoothly edited, 116-minute IMAX version (produced in 2002) is on the second disc, and the widescreen orientation coupled with the enhanced sound makes for great viewing as well. There are three documentaries included spread across both discs: the comprehensive making-of feature, "Lost Moon: The Triumph of Apollo 13 - The Making of Apollo 13", which has interviews with Howard and the cast, as well as insight into how the space shots were created; "Conquering Space: The Moon and Beyond", a 48-minute general overview of the race to the Moon and the exploration of Mars, produced mainly for the uninitiated; and a twelve-minute NBC Dateline feature called "Lucky 13: The Astronauts' Story", which contains interviews with the astronauts and members of Mission Control for the Apollo 13 mission. There are two alternative commentary tracks, the first with Howard who is extremely knowledgeable and highly infectious in his descriptions of the shoot, the other with Jim and Marilyn Lovell providing valuable insight as to how it really felt as the events were unfolding. A truly excellent package.

I'd rather have this set instead of Van Helsing

And this is despite the fact that I also have trouble with freezing at times. I have not yet read a review that mentions a specific disc or movie that freezes - mine is Spanish Dracula at around 17:15 to 17:25 into the movie. This happens on three different players from three different manufacturers (though the Pioneer recovers gracefully and plays on). My box arrived in good condition without any loose discs as Amazon's packaging is above average for this type of item. It sounds like bad encoding at the source and I hope the next sets are not problematic. I'm grateful for DVD technology bringing so many classics into my home without breaking the bank and even enjoy the old silent horror movies and serials as well.

The Cardinal is an excellent story of the early times in the church. It is nicely done and portrays the very difficult life of a priest who becomes a Cardinal and all the struggles he had to overcome. It is an excellent movie.

This version fills in a lot of the gaps that the original cut had. Even after 12 years, I remember the movie had too many characters with not enough development. This version, along with better sound & color is almost 4 hours of pure gold!

touching 'coming-of-age' story - Beautiful Music

Woven into the story of a young violin prodigy from the countryside of China on the path to fame in Beijing, is a wonderful "coming of age story" about learning to follow your heart.
The music in this story is beyond compare. I have already ordered the soundtrack and I just watched this movie last night.
The young star is brilliant. The supporting roles were superb. I especially enjoyed the relationships that develop between the young boy and his first music teacher and between his father and the young neighbor.
The mandarin dialogue is excellently translated into idiom-rich English. I also liked the openness of the movies portrayal of the "guanxi" (favoritism) in Chinese society.
American watchers may find one or two conversations a bit slow and circular - but remember you are catching a glimpse into another society - one that is not so fast paced and not always as direct in speech as our own. All in all, this movie has a fast pace a plot that keeps you guessing what will happen next. The teenage star throws in a twist of his own (as teenagers often do).
Unless the sound of beautiful, emotional orchestral music with powerful ever intensifying violin solos makes you want to put cotton in your ears and leave the building, I can't think of anyone who would not like this movie.

Almost every thing said about this series is true

I am a thorough going Sherlock Holmes fan and owner of the entire series on VHS tape. Most everything that everyone says about this series is true. Excellent production values; as faithful to the Victorian era as I can imagine not having been in it; generally superb acting, especially Edward Hardwicke (replaced in these episodes by David Burke when Hardwicke was ill); extremely faithful to the original stories (dialog often being lifted verbatim), the sense of the characters is an exact reproduction of the originals, and Brett is the best Holmes ever. Nonetheless and contrary to what is usually stated, Brett's affect is often exaggerated and artificial, and sometimes the timing within his lines simply does not fit the meaning.
