Journey to the Center of the Earth - movie DVD cover picture
Classic - 'nuff said

One of those timeless movies that make you say, "Hey, where did those two hours go?" Saw this when I was 13 years old, and remained convinced for years that I could make it to the center of the earth if I could just find the right hole!
Ah, well. Makes me long for the production values and script writing talents of those days. No cursing, no nudity, no sex, no loud, frantically cut fight scenes. Just classy entertainment!!
Regarding the dinosaurs - in the absence of budget for stop motion animation, they actually did something very clever. They came up with dinosaurs that DID run about on all fours - dimetrodons. Rigging up a few iguanas with fins was quite an elegant idea. At least they weren't dishonest - they didn't call them tyrannosaurs and brontosaurs, like the makers of "The Lost World" a year later.

Creators of lame horror films beware!! I have just heard your death knell sound. This movie is an all-out terrifying ride that pulls no punches whatsoever. Director Silva deserves kudos for creating a movie that will definitely scare you and get under your skin. No goofy one-liners. No celebrity guest stars who couldn't act if they had an instruction manual. No soundtrack full of hip songs by bands du jour. No, none of that...just a solid tale of terror and the unknown skillfully put together and performed. Fans of the current teen horror films beware! With movies like this being released, they are starting to look more and more like what they really are; crass marketing ploys aimed at sucking all of the cash from your pockets and killing your brain cells. True horror fans take heart! There is a light at the end of this black tunnel.

Bamboozled (New Line Platinum Series) - movie DVD cover picture
Eyes Wide Open

Spike Lee brings forth yet another thought provoking and emotionally stirring "movie" that ultimately illustrated two themes: the way the media in all forms has exploited African-American culture and an underlying theme of alcoholism and how the media targets young African-Americans through propaganda to ride the wave of alcohol addiction.
Bamboozled left me speechless and ready to take further action aganst stereotypes that the media--and unfortunately many African-Americans--has perpetrated against my people.
It was a stroke of genius that Spike used two well-known comedians who had participated in such modern day minstrel shows (Damon Wayans and Tommy Davidson) to illustrate the point of his movie.
The one person in the movie who was integral to making folks wake up was Jada Pinkett-Smith, who gave each character gifts that would hopefully open their eyes up to their self-inflicted blindness.
Bamboozled truly made me think (as most Spike Lee movies do). It further justified the reason I refuse to buy into the gold tooth rockin'-women disrespecting-stereotype glamorizing media that has attacked the African-American community and has further spread like a virus as a result of the consumer habits of the United States.

Give us more!

Since first airing, the Halloween Specials (aka Treehouse of Horror) have been some of the most imaginative and satirical of Simpsons episodes. It's a shame that this is not a double disc collection of ALL Halloween Specials to date but the 4 presented here are definitely some of the best.
First up is Treehouse of Horror 1 (1991) and, like Bart says about Friday the 13th part 1, it's pretty tame by today's standards. Second is Treehouse of Horror V (1995) which is my fave because it contains Homer 3, the episode in which Homer falls into the 3rd dimension and finally into the real world. Third is Treehouse of Horror VI (1996) in which the earth is enslaved by Kang and Kodos (posing as presidential candidates Clin-ton and Bob Dole). Lastly is Treehouse of Horror XI containing a fabulous Harry Potter spoof and the voice of Pierce Brosnan as a house who takes a shine to Marge.
The DVD is in 1.33:1, as drawn and is in Dolby 2.0 surround. The only extra is a short clip highlighting Kang and Kodos best moments. It would be cool of Fox to release a few more of these Halloween sets as only a third of the Halloween Specials are featured here, sadly the one where Freddy and Jason are sitting on their sofa at the beginning is not one of them. Still, it's definitely worth picking up.

Cinematic Masterpiece!

What else can be said about this cinematic masterpiece? Also check out Paramount Studio's web page for more details. This two-disc set just packed with the works. What a different perspective I have after seeing it on AMC vs the 22 year-old version I taped on my top-load VCR. Somethings ARE worth waiting for.

Renaissance Man Extraordinaire - Carpe Diem

There are so many messages behind this great movie with Bill Murray and Andie MacDowell. He is head over heals for MacDowell from the start, but as an arrogant weatherman, he seems to just tick her off from the start as well.
Imagine waking up every morning and it is the same day over and over again? Well, Murray has this happen to him. Every time he does his day becomes one disaster after another until he finally gives in and figures out he can use each day to improve himself and his life a little at a time.
The message here is clear. We all have a life that is made up of the same day everyday, what we choose to do with that day is really up to us. Do we want to improve our lot in life or just go along with being ourselves in a boring unfulfilled endless life that is a cycle of recurring themes?
This movie shows anyone, even though it is a comedy, that each day we have a choice to make the day what it can be. Murray plays Phil Connors, on Ground Hog Day when the ground hog's name is also Phil...go figure. Connors is as arrogant as they come and he just keeps trying so hard to impress people.
He goes from egotisical and self serving to seeing himself to get the girl of his dreams, Rita. It would be nice to know how many days of Ground Hog Days he spent there. You can see him go from this to a renaissance man who really cares about people, loves life and takes each day and uses it to improve himself.
Rita, although the same person and not being influenced or affected by being in Ground Hog day, comes to really like Phil. This movie makes us laugh at ourselves and our humanity. And by the end of the movie, he shows that he can have a positive effect on everyone he comes in contact with.
So when you hear the song, "I've Got You Babe," and the announcers saying, "It's Ground Hog Day....." remember to use the day to its fullest.

A Landmark

With this picture, John Ford took story and form from the B-western and raised it to the level of great filmmaking, a work of art. Ford's pioneering use of deep focus, his exceptional composition, the magnificent exterior sequences shot in Monument Valley, all make this a first-rate film and a tremendously influential work. The broader story, emblematic of the Western mythos, involves a desparate run for safety from Geronimo. Against that backdrop, the film uses character types to explore the relationships among the American classes. John Wayne is pure innocence as the Ringo Kid, surrounded by a group of top-notch players. Thomas Mitchell's performance as the drunken Doc Boone stands out particularly, for both sheer amusement and occasional glimpses of real greatness. This film is a delight to watch, for simple entertainment or for the richness of its cinematic artistry.

Dear Mr. Travers

(...)P>>> "Fahrenheit 9/11" (the title stolen without permission >> from Ray Bradbury's "Fahrenheit 451")By your standards, this would be a "lie", as you're trying to imply that his riff on Bradbury's title required Ray's permission - but it's clearly fair use. Example: half the porn movies that come out have titles that parody mainstream films.
>> one must accept the fact that George Bush knew >> about 9/11 ahead of timeMoore didn't say that. Is that what you think after seeing Bush's "reaction"? And...who benefitted?
>> allowed it in cahoots with Osama bin Laden>> and the Saudi royal familyHe didn't say that either, now, did he? He said they went light on the Saudis and that his dad gave Bin Laden his first serious backing - both things clear from the public record.
>> in order to justify the long-desired American>> invasion of the Middle EastOh, it's a conicidence that all the actually intelligent people around Shrub have openly lusted for just such a series of invasions for years? Check the congressional record from Feb. 2001 when Unocal was asking us for an invasion of Afghanistan. Check far-eastern newspapers from summer 2001, when they all said we'd be invading Afghanistan in the fall. Check ownership of the flight schools where the hijackers went in Florida.
>> spirited bin Laden's legitimate family>> out of the countryAnother matter that is easily proven from the government's own testimony and documents, though the Bushies denied it UNTIL proof was shown to the public. THEN they said it was no biggie...
>> because they were part of the plot >> bring oil profits to the Bush familyMoore didn't say either of these things either, where do you get this stuff? Have you been watching a different movie from everyone else? Hint: "911 - Road to Tyranny" is not the Moore film
>> 6,778 pieces of factual evidenceWhat a joke. You haven't managed to list one actual assertion made by Moore that isn't easily confirmed, and you have listed your assumptions and his jokes as if they were his statements. This is really weak; you would not make it through 9th grade logic at a decent Catholic school.
>> that have been determined by the world to >> discredit Moore's work as lies.Gosh I hope you're just learning English as a second language. If it's your first language, you should get checked for Down's Syndrome.
>> the liberal press hit us with big headlines telling us that it "broke records" made $21 millionThe records spoken of were in the documentary category, and once again the statements are easily proven.
>> "The Passion of the Christ" made $117 million in its first weekend.Yes, but repulsive bloody porn like that is always more profitable than documentaries.
>> It will influence the election. In favor of Bush. If it does, it still won't be enough to get that hydrocephalic dung beetle Connecticut rich boy fake conservative elected for what would be the first time. Maybe they'll pull something and stop the election, but they're history anyway.
>> Still, Moore is a hero of the LeftI'm a libertarian - ie, true conservative, and I like his work. The left you imagine is tiny and is not that majority of educated people who oppose Bush and his hillbilly supporters. Most people are a little smarter than that "left-right" dichotomy, but some are just sheep who think any criticism of Lord Shrub makes the critical party a "liberal" (neocon codeword for someone who has traveled and actually reads books)
>> These Truths remain self-evident. Res ipsa loquiter.Throwing in one English and one Latin clich? at the end doesn't make up for the fact that you're a sub-literate liar, sir.
