If you are confused about abortion--

-- this movie helps to sort out your feelings, because, while abortion is a very serious matter, the people in the public eye in both the pro-choice and anti-abortion sides are often, well, laughingstocks. This movie deals with that aspect... the way extremists are so bizzarre and ultimately unhelpful. 'Citizen Ruth' can show how abortion extremists often ignore the flesh-and-blood women they're dealing with and spend more time arguing concepts.

Watch it today if you haven't seen it

Braveheart is a beautiful & well produced movie about the Scottish peoples' revolt from England with William Wallace (Gibson) leading the strike. The story line will keep you in your seat and eyes glued to the TV. If you like movies about events that happened and are somewhat documentaries of the event (i.e. Titanic), then you must see this. I promise that this one will not disappoint.

A call to honor and purity!

This movie is sad, funny, and thrilling. From Nickolas seeking honorable employment, to his sister keeping pure, this film delighted me. I saw it twice! Finally a movie that displays values and presents moral lessons! It rebukes today's immoral society and brings forth the value of a clean one. I highly recommend it, a wonderful story for all to enjoy.

One Of The Best Movies You Can Find

Forrest Gump is a different kind of movie; it's a story of the life of one man, from his adolescence to his adulthood, during the controversial as well as exciting times of the 20th century. The problem with Forrest Gump is that, now that I look back on it, Forrest himself is just your average, sugar-sweet nice boy, who happens to be in the right place at the right time, instead of the determined hero the film tries to make you think he is.

From the beginning, we view a feather floating softly and unpredictably around the sky, twirling around and around as it lands on our protagonist's feet. He picks it up and puts it in a book, and we see that he is sitting on a park bench, at a bus stop. There is someone next to him, and he strikes up a conversation, where we are brought back to his childhood. There, it is told that Forrest's feet are strong, but his back is too weak to support them. Therefore, he must wear clumsy braces and is thus made fun of.

The story isn't really interesting, up until Forrest is chased by a group of bullies and he breaks free of his braces. That in itself is an inspiring moment, and to me the only one of the film. After that, we are shown the pivoting moments of his life, as a football player, vietnam veteran, ping-pong player, shrimp-boat captain, and finally, a father.

Tom Hanks is his usual terrific self, and he transforms Forrest into a funny and likable fellow, without too much of an annoying Southern accent. But more interesting are the supporting characters of Forrest's life, more specifically Gary Sinise as Lieutenant Dan, a hard, suffering squad captain that Forrest saves in battle.

One remarkable thing about Forrest Gump is its unique storytelling device. A little bit into the film we learn that Forrest is waiting for the Number 9 bus, and along comes the Number Five, Six, Seven, and so on, as we know that the story is coming to a close. In the end, it discards this idea, and thus loses its power, and the story just..ends. No surprise, no tear-jerker, just a predictable, corny ending. Zemeckis does well with the movie, but the story doesn't live up to his direction.

Only two reviews !

OK, so its not Hollywood, but this film is totally rivetting without one gunshot or car chase in sight. No schmaltz or syrupy sentimentality, just a dispassionate look at two people who endure the agony of a long time marriage breaking up. If you are bored with Holloywood overload, take a look at something that is totally intelligent and engrossing. Take a look at what others in the world think and do.

Excellent

This is one of the best thrillers/whodunits I have ever seen. Even after I thought I knew what was going on, it still stuck it to me in the end. It was very scary, but not because of the normal slasher movie cliches, but because I had no idea what was going to happen next. The story is pretty much an updated version of Ten little indians, which is a wonderful whodunit in itself. All of the acting is wonderful. There is humor just when you need it, but it does not stay around for long.
The story follows 11 people as they are thrust into each others lives with out knowing why. One by one they are murdered and at each murder a room key is left starting with room 10 and going down to 1. So it is up to them to first find out who is killing them, second why and third what do they all have in common. The movie cuts back and forth between the motel where the murders are taking place and a courthouse where there is a midnight meeting going on about what is going to happen to a convicted killer. The pace is pretty quick and there is not much downtime. Once you think you have figured it out a screwdriver is thrown into the spokes of your wheel and you are left right back at the beginning to start over. This is a must see for all thriller/scary movie fans. Just give in and let it take you for a ride. You will not be sorry.

A Good Old Fashioned Ghost Story

I really loved this movie. It takes place in one of my favorite settings-a small American town.A lovely setting.
I enjoyed the close knit family aspects. The love the widowed father has for his two sons is palpable. And what a delight the boys' grandparents are!
The scenes in the school cloakroom are the most chilling I've ever seen in a movie! I own this movie on VHS and every time I watch it, The darn thing never fails to give me goosebumps!
It actually took me several times of watching The Lady in White before I realized that the singer singing the wonderful old tune, Did You Ever See A Dream Walking? was none other than my beloved Bing Crosby! A very young Bing!( see my review of It's Easy To Remember, a great collection of Bing's early songs ) In fact, every time I hear that song I get goosebumps! It's not a scary song, but I assosiate it with this thrilling movie.
I really have to say that there is not one single thing about the film that I don't love. Even the terrible parts that make me cry-even still-I wouldn't do without. Every scene plays an important part in making this film what it is-a completely charming, yet very frightening piece of work.
I don't recommend missing THIS movie if you love ghost stories, family values, Americana, and wonderful acting.
Thank you.Alice B. Kane

Fantastic Experience - and Educational for Americans

Ciao, Professore! is an absolutely wonderful Italian film dealing not only with the cleverness and light-heartedness of children, but also with the unfortunate political and social problems that rage in Southern Italy. The film, though distinctly European, does not assume too much of the viewer in any respect, and one has the opportunity to see how Italians view the North/South and regional splits that continue to fragment the country. The tale, following the exploits of a middle class teacher transferred by accident to a lower class elementary school, shows how the Northern teacher and Southern students gain respect for one another and reconcile their differences. The film is not afraid to comment on Southern problems that include crime, pollution, and poverty, nor on the people who endure these for the sake of their families and children. If you are tired of mob films that spin Italians in a negative light, come learn how wonderful these people really can be. An amusing comedy that the whole family can watch together...simple enough for children and sophisticated enough for adults. Five stars.

Changing Lanes - movie DVD cover picture
Moral relativism, meaning, ethics...and great acting!

This is a powerful movie. All the events take place in one day. After a minor car accident, the lives of two men become intertwined and quickly place both of them in difficult personal situations. As a result, the ethics of both of the lead characters are stretched and broken in a series of escalating acts of anger and desperation.
Yet through a series of events that ultimately illuminate the morally bankrupt relativistic worldview of his law firm, the wealthy lawyer (played by Ben Affleck) discovers his soul and begins a road to regain his life. The character played by Samuel Jackson learns to keep his emotions in check and remarkably in spite of the events of the day is able to do the right thing and "accept the things he cannot change".
Both Ben Affleck and Samuel Jackson are outstanding. The frightening ease at which our lives can quickly slip out of our control is depicted in a way that emotionally resonates. In each of us is the potential for small choices to start a series of events that test our character and ethics.
A well done, powerful film. Highly recommended.
