LIEBERSTRAUM........

Cannot wax too profusely about this unique collection - it's for the sserious film student to behold - and perhaps for the not too serious - just to see 'how it was all done' with minimum effect.
Numerous extras including choice of soundtracks, etc. Absolutely a 'must have' - especially since it contains rarely viewed "The Golem" [strangely pertinent today] and the original "Waxworks".
Pity that this landmark studio is now potentially marked for destruction - ah progress!

One of the best - Una de las majores peliculas de todo tiemp

For those familiar with Southern Cone writers, this film shares the wanderer bleakness of a S?bato's "H?roes y Tumbas" - and the end-of-the-road tristesse of an Onetti's "Cuando ya no importe" - ("Que el ultimo en irse apague la luz" - Montevideo's epitaph spray-painted on the walls of the airport - "The last one please out turn off the lights"). A Shadow conveys a tanguero's nostaglia, a comradery and heartbreak of lost souls. For those familiar with Germanic writers, Knut Hamsun's "Mysterier", or Kafka's "Prozess" (The Trial), may come to mind - but in A Shadow, our wander is one among many, and there's the light, the perpetual wind, the sunsets, the semi-ghost towns of the pampas. Its absurd, poetic love of life places it more akin to Fellini - as though life were a concatenation of scenes - touching moments of intimacy, of failed dreams and haunting illusions. Indeed the main character has returned from Italy, to the Pampas' gallows humour roads and towns, driven by a nostalgia for a way of life that's too much in his blood, too much a part of him. The artistic touch for these wanderers is to sense the correct timing for their final bow and exit, before the actor and his role become grotesque.
I find this a splendidly crafted, yet simple, low-budget, humanistic work of art. I wish there were more like it.

One of best western ever

After 23 years this continues to rank up there with one of the better realistic westerns. Outside of the Sam Starr and Cole Younger knife fight, everything seems to be historically accurate and even that may be true. I can watch this one over and over again. I also like The Wild Bunch, Once Upon a Time in the West and anything Eastwood. I still think the horses going the window scene and bank robbery itself ranks up there with the watch scene from Good, Bad, Ugly.

The Ring Review

Unexpecting is what I'd like to call the suspenseful and yet on egde thriller. The movie itself gives you a fear and gothic effect to everything the audience sees and hears. The leading lady in this film, wasn't only pretty, but she also full-filled the part of Rachel in all aspects the character needed to be. If your looking for a thriller, this is deffinately the movie to see. It still leaves creepy images in the back of my mind!

Extraordinary!

Having seen a 1996 revival of this production at the ENO (my first encounter with Grimes), I was anxiously awaiting this release on DVD. Am pleased to report it is as gripping and shattering an experience. Cast all around is up to the task, and orchestra superbly captures the rhythms of Britten's driving score. Sound and video are fine. Would have appreciated optional surtitles to help grasp all the words, but we're left at the mercy of singers' diction. All in all, an extraordinary evening in the theatre.

Felicia's Journey - movie DVD cover picture
Mr Hilditch's Home for Wayward Girls

William Trevor is a wonderful writer; but I am now convinced that Atom Egoyan is an even greater filmmaker. When one compares the novel with the film, it is Trevor who suffers.
Felicia is knocked up by a visiting Irish lad who lives around Birmingham. Without letting her family know that she has gone far beyond their interdictions of her relationship, she gathers up some money and jumps the ferry to England. Did I forget to tell you that he never bothered to give her his address? All she knows is that he works in the manufacture of power lawnmowers.
Mr Hilditch, son of a deceased French female TV chef, has built his life on cooking his mother's recipes for himself and for the factory workers for whom he runs an inhouse cafeteria. He is fascinated by Felicia (as he was with other "wayward" girls in the past) and seems to stalk her with good advice and officious, somewhat suspect, help as she fails to find her beau.
What prevents Mr Hilditch from drugging and killing the helpless Felicia, who has just had an abortion at his behest, is a sudden and unexpected confrontation with a West Indian woman street preacher who quite suddenly makes Mr Hilditch confront himself for the first time. His pattern of unexamined repetitive behavior is suddenly shattered. In the confusion, Felicia escapes; and the poor gourmet/killer has no recourse but to put an end to all his compulsions in the most decisive way possible.
Given the subject matter, why are the scenes in Ireland suffused with a haunting Celtic sympathetic sadness? And why is Hilditch in love with his dead mother, and why does he spend all his time watching her videos and following her movement for movement as she concocts fabulous French dishes, which he eats alone? This is all Egoyan, not Trevor.
With Egoyan, you read between the lines. The plot is there, but mind and spirit are always taking up new and strange forms. What a marvellous ride!

Dumbo (60th Anniversary Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
a true classic - with multiple levels of meaning

Everybody loves Dumbo for all the right reasons - great story with humor and pathos, wonderful music, and delightful animation. However, no one seems to have noticed the underlying racial themes that fuel the plot. Dumbo's mom, and the other female elephants she lives and works with, are all Indian elephants (small ears). Dumbo's dad (Jumbo), from whom he must have inherited his big ears, must have been African. Dumbo (and his mother) were mocked and ultimately ostracized from decent elephant society because he was the product of a mixed marriage. Only after he learns (with the help of those zoot-suited, jive-talkin' crows) to use his physical "defect" to excel at something (flying) is he accepted back into the circus. While "Dumbo" teaches us that we're all "special," it also paints a rather darker picture of society being intolerant of differences unless or until those differences can benefit that society.
