Kubrick's Slow Ride

Kubrick's films, as a rule, defy the rules. It's safe to say that you cannot show nearly ten minutes of raw establishing shots at the onset of a film. It's equally safe to say that series of abstract images and colors are a big no-no in a would-be mainstream, commercial film. Kubrick could give a rip. The essence of the film which makes it so fascinating is its willingness to play loose with the "rules." Space Travel is fast-paced and exciting, right? Kubrick's stroke of genius is to make a movie which is slow-paced and, to be honest, boring to explore the transformation of a society which is itself slow-paced and boring. Mankind is shown at its most mundane, making phone calls, dozing on long trips, jogging to stay in shape. Into this world is tossed an odd supernatural force, an injection of the divine, which literally speeds up the course of Dave's life and transforms him into... something wonderful. Kubrick doesn't need to be interesting. His boring movie is pointed right at every one of us, threatening us to take an odyssey into the cosmically divine.

One of the best horror films EVER!!!!

To say I love this movie, would be an understatment. It is my favorite horror flick ever. This film mixes horror, suspense, the requisite gore, love, friendship, science, and humor, all the while making me think "hey, it could happen". Alice Cooper cracks me up and he never says a word. The scenes where the future contacts the present and the scene where Lisa Blount saves the world are the best. The suspense in that Lisa Blount/Devil scene kills me every time. I am on the edge of my seat. Mind you, I have seen this movie hundreds of time. It still gets me every single time. If you are looking for a movie where barely clothed cheerleaders run around screaming, this is not the movie for you. If you want to be entertained and think a bit while you do, this IS the movie for you. I agree with the one review: this is probably a you either love it or hate it type movie. Give it a chance. I don't think you will be disappointed.

WONDERFUL, CREATIVE, ON THE EDGE ENERTAINMENT!

I have two small children both under the age of two and when I put this video in they are mesmerized. My 10 month old's eyes are fixed on the screen and never leave it! She claps to the beat of each song. My 21 month old jumps and sings. She has already learned most of the body movements to each song and we have only had this video for two weeks! What amazing, wonderful, and talented artists.

One Of The Greatest Films Ever Made

All I can say about THE THIN RED LINE is this: to all you people who hated the film and claimed how boring it is, "You obviously didn't get it. Watch it again, and this time bring your brain with you." You'll be amazed how a film can challenge you, intellectually.

Kubrick's best

This movie about a bunch of white gangsters is probably the only one that was out in the 70's. Stanley Kubrick was well known after writing this masterpiece. I can't compare this movie to any other because there are no movies about futuristic gangsters. Its just amazing. A story about a boy who has a violent head and still appreciates the art of music like mozart and beethoven. Then getting caught commiting a crime, going to jail and then totally turning from evil to good... then he goes through another process again from going from good to evil. Its very interesting.

Simply wonderful

If you enjoy a good mystery, you'll love Hetty Wainthropp Investigates. I fell in love with this series the very first time I saw it. Patricia Routledge (Keep Up Appearances) shines as Hetty. Along with Dominic Monaghan (Lord of the Rings, LOST), who plays her cheeky sidekick, you just can't go wrong. This show has it all, mystery, drama, suspense, and humor. I highly recommend purchasing this dvd, along with the season one set as well.

Fantastic

I watched this when it was on PBS last month and thought it was one of the best documentaries I've seen. It left me wondering what happened to politicians like RFK. Why are we consistently stuck with less than stellar candidates for the most important job in the world?
