Kubrick Takes on the Cold War

Dr. Strangelove is at the top of of the (very short) list of political parodies in the world of cinema. With the help of some fine performances from Peter Sellers, George C. Scott, and Slim Pickens, among others, Kubrick skewers a wide range of targets - the absurdity of the nuclear world, with its Mutually Assured Destruction and Missile Gaps, the irony of the contribution of German scientists to America's military might, the paranoia that surrounded the Red Scare - they're all here. It is Sellers' wonderfully understated Mandrake (the embodiment of the "special relationship" between America and Britain - see Christopher Hitchens, among others) who carries the day, and the film. Kubrick seems to have a way with soft-spoken English chaps who take their time getting to where they are going (think of the bartender in the Shining, and much of the early bits of 2001), but who speak volumes nonetheless. A little dated, perhaps, but the humor (and the underlying politics) still rings true.

Very Real!

This 4-disc set includes all the episodes from season one, including the pilot. The pilot is a double-length episode that grabs you from the very beginning. Over 25 hours of viewing pleasure in this set. The pilot has a commentary track by series creator, Michael Chrichton.
There are other various commentaries throughout the set. I would recommend this set as a gift or as a gift to yourself. The discs are double-sided and the packaging is pretty amazing. I was not sure about Warner Brothers' packaging for a while but they seem to have a grasp on how to package & release important titles. You won't be disappointed. You'll eagerly await the release of season two.

The Worst Witch will charm you!

BATTLE OF THE BROOMSTICKSPoor Mildred Hubble makes a mess of her first day at Witch Academy. First, on her way to school, she runs afoul of snobby Ethel Hallow who'll become her arch enemy. Then she arrives late and the gate is closed on her. She clumsily flies over it and crash lands into a dust bin on the other side, narrow missing a collision with Miss Hardbroom, the strict no-nosense witch who'll be Mildred's home room teacher. Luckily Mildred makes fast friends with the sweet, soft spoken Maud Moonshine. Who patches Mildred's now broken broom with packing tape. Having a bent broom won't help with the broomstick flying test, which the girls will have to pass in order to stay on at the academy. And Mildred's both afraid of heights and the dark, which will make the test difficult. But, she has the the help of her new friends, Maud, Ruby Cherrytree and Jadu Wali, and she'll need it.
WHEN WE FEAST AT THE MIDNIGHT HOUR.Mildred and her friends plan a midnight raid on the kitchen, prompted by the disgusting school menu. Which is no fault of Miss Tapioca, the cook. She has to follow the school book of regulations on what to serve. And it always gets cold, on the long journey to the dining room.Because of the complaints, Miss Cackle decides to eat the same food as the students. And discovers just how gross it is.The girls' midnight feast is scheduled for the last night of Sir Walter's Wet Week, a time when a ghost is supposed to wander the corridors of the spooky old castle.
PIG IN A POKEMr. Blossom's nephew Charlie comes for a visit, and Ethel is being particulary snotty to Mildred. Especially after the cat presentation ceremony & Mildred is given cute tabby kitten, instead of the traditional black one, because they ran out. Ethel can't resist teasing. Mildred is pushed too far, and turns Ethel into a pig by accident (she was trying for a frog...) Then Ethel trots off, getting lost, and Mr. Blossom takes her to a local pig farmer, who is taking his pigs to market that day!
Charlie takes an active part in the rescue, he knows a reversing spell, kind of..
Based on the books by Jill Murphy and presented in the U.S. on HBO. This is an incredible series. Heart warming, wholesome, and witty. I don't think it's for an specific age group, people of all ages will enjoy it. The scripts are very well written, very humorous. And the cast is excellent. They all seem to enjoy their roles very much. Georgina Sherrington will charm you, she's the perfect match for Mildred Hubble.
And that spooky castle is really cool. I wish there was a school like that. :-)
And I wish and hope that BFS video and Granada will put more episodes on vhs and dvd. There are more than what's in the two collections, including one of my favorites "It's a Frog's Life".

A Sumptuous and Charming Recipe for Magic!

It was very early one morning, the rising September sun just begining to brightly filter through the windows, when I, not ordinarily accustomed to early rising, wrapped myself in a blanket and sat down to watch "Blonde Venus" soon followed by "Suzy" with Jean Harlow - two films as silly as anything to come out of the Hollywood dream factory. But strangely, that sleepy morning was one of the most warm and pleasurable of my life. Don't ask me just why, but then and there all the ingredients for magic simply clicked. "Blonde Venus," like so many of Sternberg's films, has been frequently called an excercise in style over substance. I would have to disagee, though the style is of course sumptuous, I would say rather it was a triumph in substance over story, if that can be. In spite of an undeniably soap opera style plot, it can also not be denied its empathy and emotion, generated in no small part by Marlene Dietrich. It is impossible to say just how, but Dietrich in this film has done something truly unique. She has managed to be at one time smolderingly sexy, and yet tender and warm, maternally comforting. These traits should be a natural contradiction, but somehow she subtly blends them, making one seem unthinkable without the other. It is not a great film, yet it is wonderful. Coupled remarkably well with "Suzy," "Blond Venus" gave me a light and wonderful morning of escapist magic. If you give in at the right time, I should certainly think it would do the same for you.

wonderful show, wonderful people, wonderful story

When I first heard about One Tree Hill, I was intrigued because I had heard of Chad Michael Murray, and I really wanted to see if the show was worth watching. It was. The Pilot was... well bad. No point denying it, but like someone else said, I saw potential, I saw a show that had a heart, I saw characters that were interseting and could be explored, and wasn't just about who was slept with who one week after another. I know that it has constantly has been compared with both Dawson's Creek and The O.C., and I for one don't find it even on the same level as either, much less worse than them. I never got into DC. O.C.... well, OC is entertaining, but at the end of the day, I can't relate to any of the characters like I can relate to the ones on this show. OC is so completely unrealistic, and lack of heart and soul is seriously killing it.

One Tree Hill is about two half-brothers, Lucas (Chad Michael Murray) and Nathan (James Lafferty), who share the same father, Dan (Paul Johansson), but different mothers, Lucas' mom, Karen(Moira Kelly) and Nathan's mom, Deb (Barbara Alyn Woods). The show basically revolves around the two brothers and the girls in their lives and what they deal with everyday. Dan left Karen their senior year of high school after he found out that she was pregnant with Lucas. He went off to college and met Deb, got her pregnant, and the two later got married and had Nathan. Keith (Craig Sheffer)is Dan's older brother and has always had feelings for Karen, although those feelings haven't been reciprocated. He's also been like a father to Lucas. Peyton (Hilarie Burton) and Brooke (Sophia Bush) are the two girls that both loved Lucas last season, they were best friends, and Lucas liked Peyton, then went out with Brooke, then cheated on her with Peyton, just to put it in a nutshell. Haley (Bethany Joy Lenz) is Lucas' best friend who falls in love with Nathan.

Someone said that they think James Lafferty is the most underrated actor on the show, and I just wanted to say that I agree with you whole-heartedly. At the beginning of the show, he was the biggest jerk in the world, and I love the journey and development it took from him being an ass to him being a really loyal and wonderful boyfriend. I find it very sad that he is so underappreciated, and that everything is always focused on Chad. But James can play both the ass and the sweet boyfriend incredibly well, and I for one really want to see what the future has for this young actor. One of my favorite things about the show is the relationship between Nathan and Haley, they are so perfect for each other, fit so well, and James and Bethany's chemistry on screen seriously crackles. Their storyline and the development of how they started going out is truly spectacular writing and I can't wait to see what the writers have in store for them.

Another thing that I really enjoy about this show, is the variety of songs that they play. A lot of shows just play the "biggest hits" of the season on their show just because that's what they are, the biggest hits. But have absolutely nothing to do with what's going on. You can really tell that the producers spend time to make sure that the songs that they choose for each individual scene, to make sure that it fits perfectly and that it has actual relevance to what's happening. And they don't just play one genre like other shows, they have a variety of different groups and types of music that I have come to love and look forward to.

Complicated, but true...

I've heard stuff like "This movie is ALL racism, hatred, and even more hatred." Now I'm wondering if all of us really got the point of this movie. I was pretty surprised to find many people saying that this movie was not good. I knew a lot about the Armenian Genocide(that is, I'm Armenian :) and what happened to my family, I didn't need to know any more... Although I'm seriously against racism(don't get me wrong, this movie isn't racist), I seriously want the Turks to admit that they did such a thing. I was seriously thinking after this movie. This is not a movie that Armenians HAVE to see, this is a movie that everyone else should see. By the way that guy from Glendale who said that this movie was racism and stuff:"I'll meet you on Pacific."My friends and I were amazed by this movie. I can't find words to describe this. I seriously think that everybody should see this. My father told me that there was [someone]on TV who said a lot of bad things about this, whatever his name is, I seriously think that guy should get a life. It's like he is racist himself, I can't actually believe that he said something bad about this movie. Of course you wouldn't take 6 or 7 year olds to see this movie, but... If you really get the point of this you'll realize that this movie was just made to make people realize that it's not just the land, or the people, but how much we've been hated, just like they said it in the movie, you know? Now, I'm seriously not against the Turks, so don't get me wrong. I hear that the Turks are trying to make a movie that will show that we're wrong. Let them believe what they want. Movies like "Ararat" come once or twice in a lifetime. This movie is way too heavy, if you know what I mean. Someone just might get a heart attack on their way home after seeing this movie. I don't mean that that'll be you but still people, this movie is simply amazing. I don't think I'm going to be doing anything for a while. But seriously, Atom Egoyan has really done it this time(in a good way, of course). You won't be taught anything like this in your History classes, so just go see the movie. I think I won't see it again, but I wonder... Will this come out on DVD or video or both? Well anyway, this is just great. This movie is really thought-provoking. There's one sex scene(this was not necessary, but okay) and no I didn't like it. "The Sweet Herafter" was really good, "What real movies are supposed to be."(everyone keeps saying this). LISTEN to what the characters say, all of the dialogue. Because most of the point of this movie is in the dialogue. Just go see it!

Great Digital Remaster

Finally its been digitally remastered! This and "Snake In The Eagle's Shadow" are perfect for your collection. The quality is excellent and superior to any video version. On my DVD player, the audio language sometimes alternated between English and Chinese but I set it to display the caption in English. And it's in fantastic widescreen so you can see all the action, literally, that is cut off in the video version.
