Kowalski Rides Again

'Vanishing Point' still resonates within my soul, some 34 years after it was filmed. This latest release in DVD offers great extras (Sarafian's commentary and the extra scenes edited out of the original release make it worthwhile). Vanishing Point has not a single allure, it has many. It is Kowalski, the Challenger, the music, the trip and yes it is (was) the times, all of which make it very personal for me, having lived them. So much so that in the summer of 2003 I retraced Kowalski's path from Colorado through Utah and Nevada in my 1970 Challenger RT. It's a long, long ride but the scenery is still magnificent and the Challenger still dominates the highway (and surprises the occassional state trooper like the one who eyed me just outside of Eureka, Nevada - arriving a minute earlier he would have heard me go by at 140 mph. And they say you can't go home again...of course you can :) If you didn't live it or can't drive it, then by all means see it - you're not likely to be dissapointed.

Soylent Green - movie DVD cover picture
Soylent Green is made out of.....you'll have to see the film

It is of no surprise that certain corporations or institutions run industrial cities and destroy the environment around them. Let alone these two oragnizations being run by petty bureaucrats who weave their own Machavellian webs of deceit, use innocent people as scapegoats, and try to coverup things. Corporations like UPS, Meijer, Wal-Mart, Kroger, GSL, ans IUS have been guilty and notorious for such misdeeds. Even your typical university/college and its personnel are also guilty of such charges (i.e. the computer sciences division, the head cooridinator of student disabilities, The Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, The Police Cheif who is always looking for something and his subordiantes, etc). Not a pretty picture is it? Yet, when you get right down to it, such corruption and atrocities are everywhere in the world and people are willing to go to extremes to cover it up, even iif it means enforcing a gag order or killing someone. And Soylent Green does an excellent job in bringing these realities to the screen with frightening clarity and shocking results.
Set in an overcrowded and polluted 21st Century New York City, circa 2022 AD, and based on Harry Harrison's classic science fiction novel "Make Room! Make Room!", the movie tells the story about the conspiracy and murder of a corporate board member, and a hard-nosed New York Police Detective assigned to solving the case. A case that some corporate and government officials do not want to be solved.
When the executive of the Soylent Board(a corporation that wields a distrubing amount of political influence and power) is brutally murdered in what apperas to be a buggled robbery attempt, Detective Thorn is assigned to finding out who killed the board member and why. With the help of the member's girlfriend, and his roommate, Thorn manages to put the pieces of the enigmatic puzzle together, and discovers that it was an assasination, not a robbery attempt. Thorn also manages to discover something else about the nutrient wafers called Soylent Green and what they are made of. During the course of his investigation he ends up finding more information than he bargained for, and all hell breaks loose. It's up to Thorn to expose the secret and stop the corporation anyway he can.
Not a bad movie, despite it's '70's retrospective look. It introduces audience members a future that is well on its way, and what could happen if the human race does not take better care of the Earth snd its environment. Charlton Heston, Edward G. Robinson(in his final role), Leigh Taylor-Young, Chuck Connors, and a whole plethora of excellent actors do an extraordinary job of the material they are given, and the entire special effects, plot, music, and other elements of the movie are really good. If you enjoy science fiction or just the works of Charlton Heston in general, you might like this film. Be prepared for a shock. The source of Soylent Green will really take you by surprise.
*Trivia note- The book that the movie was based on was set in New York City in 1999, right before New Year's Eve. Scary thought.

Superb!!!

I've seen alooooooooooooot of movies set in ancient times but the only i thought was better than this was Gladiator, and that was mostly for the acting. While most of the performances in this film where miscast the major roles where certainly well done, the fighting scenes displayed some of the best directing I've seen since LOTR, and the special effects did full justice to the original poem. The single most obvious problem in this film is the length, you simply cannot fit a plot that complex into two and a half hours. The only Armand Assante movie I've seen better than this was the Hunley.

Why no MillenniuM?

I live in Germany and I'm a Millennium fan. I wonder why [everything] is coming on DVD and Millennium - one oft the best TV shows ever produced - have to wait years and years until it is put on DVD. Fox might think this show doesn't bring money because it's too heavy or no one would buy it. I don't think so. But I think quality should not be undervalued. Millennium isn't the X-Files, no commercial phenomenon, no chart-breaker, but simply well made suspense.

So atmospheric you can almost feel the heat!

This is just great. The story is a very traditional one, that of a country boy Ivan (played by Jimmy Cliff) who comes to the city and gradually gets wise to the ways of the world. Through his eyes we see all the sophistications of Jamaican life, the music industry, the ganja trade, the police, religious life and girls.
Ivan tries to make money in the city...
The soundtrack is populated with reggae classics from the likes of The Melodians, Desmond Dekker and Jimmy Cliff himself, and it's just as well the title song is a classic as it's played about four or five times!
This film is essential for anyone wanting to see the real Jamaica, away from the tourist spots and the dance-halls. You can almost smell the shanty towns, illustrated best by the sign saying 'please don't pass urine, people live here'. Even if you don't pay attention to the action, enjoy it for the songs.

Amazing and certainly astonishing

This film was certainly one of the best films ever made. I fell in love with it. People who don't like the film usaully complain about it having no plot thus being an extreme bore to them. or they complain it was stupid and didnt make any sense. or the complain the acting sucked. The Movie wasn't meant to have an incredible story. The movie was an epic work of art. It was an example of evolution. It made such a wonderful transition from the prehistoric past to the future. It certainly was amazing. Just how the monkeys acted was incredible. I laughed very much myself, because it showed the ignorance the monkeys had before they experienced something. The whole part where the monkey discovers how to use a weapon was amazing. After the monkey discovers how to use the object he forms his own gang and they get in a fight with the other monkeys. it was amazing.

The space part did get a little tedious with its lack of story but it was extremely interesting within the visuals. There was always something going on for you to look at and be amazed by. The whole thing was a work of art. The camera angles captured a lot of the awe, and the soundtrack moved the movie right along. It was great how the mix of music and visual art went together so well.

I have some kind of interpretation for the movie though. I think it was about the struggle of man vs. machine. Kubrik's future was a world run by computers. The wall was a symbol of the machine, and the sun was a symbol of light or truth. The machine blocks the sun. The machine hides the truth of emotion in a world where only humans are with error. the whole scene where Frank gets locked out of the spaceship was definately great. Then he destroys HAL. Yes most excellent. The ending was a little weird. With the baby and everything. I think the baby symbolized ignorance though. Well that's my interpretation at least.

So all in all superb movie. It has become one of my favorites. It had comedy and it had drama. it was wonderful. The tension at the end was great. The visual display is amazing. THe music was superb as well. Kubrik is certainly a genious who shall be remembered for many ages.

The Alamo

Sure, the movie had its flaws, it could be a little long winded at times but I can not understand why it did as bad as it did. The part I liked about the movie was that the defenders were actually stuck in the fort for most of the time, not free to leave whenever they wanted like in the John Wayne Version.

Overall-Good movie but I think the movie focused too much no the negative aspects of these men and that is why the movie did poorly at the book office people want to remember treasured national heros as something like gods. They do not want to remember their human frailties.

Masterpiece

There are probably 10 minutes in the film with no action...one of the best kung-fu films I've seen, with an excellent plot and full of action. This is what makes these kind of film so interesting, a honor and friedship problem, resolved via kung-fu. Any way, the film is very different from modern John Woo's filmography, so don't expect a Hard Target or Face/Off kind of film. This film is quite more deep and not filled with hi-tech fx, but when you think it was filmed in 1978, the fx are surprising...
