Kip Pardue- A Rising Star

... I thought DRIVEN was a suspenseful thrill ride from beginning to end. I thought we saw some fine acting from Stallone but the real star of this movie was young Kip Pardue (Jimmy Bly) I think he stole the show... I have been waiting anxiously for DRIVEN's arrival in theatres and the wait was well worth while. The intensity and message of the movie was addicting and I encourage others to see it, as I will, AGAIN, and AGAIN, and AGAIN!

Spiccoli makes this movie worthwhile!

Awesome! Totally awesome! A lot of laughs with a little drama, but that makes the movie. It is a movie about friendship and crushes, love and hate. Sean Penn makes the movie playing a stoned surfer named Jeff Spiccoli. Filled with fast food, fast girls, fast cars, fast laughs, it is Fast Times at Ridgemont High!

Fantastic debut

Writer/Director/Lead Actor Zach Braff has put together one of those films that makes you excited for what he will do next. "Garden State" is a quirky, inventive, and ultimately moving Comedy that has real heart. The smart dialogue, subtle humor, and heart-tugging emotional scenes make this film a must see.

The acting is what makes this movie so incredible. Natalie Portman gives a career defining performance, Zach Braff is stellar, and Peter Sarsgaard rounds it out with another brilliant performance. The DVD features are also good- the deleted scenes are often just short snippets, but there are a few long scenes cut that are interesting to watch. The featurette on the making of the film is also good.

It's a good DVD of a good movie, and I highly recommend it.

Harper Lee's Masterpiece comes to life.

This movie is like a magnet to just about everyone I know. As soon as you say the title peoples eyes light up and they always say "I LOVE THAT MOVIE!!". It's rare that a movie has such universal appeal that even my nephew who was seven at the time he saw it loved it and wanted to see it again. I remember watching this when I was young. It was so dark and there was such an air of seriousness (I was too young to realize everything happening in it) and the kids were literally so much like kids in my neighborhood accents and all. The mystery of Boo Radley scared me silly but I couldn't help but watch it. All I knew was that Gregory Peck was a dad that was too cool for words, who reluctantly shot a rabid dog in the street and who had a voice that would go right through you. It left such an impression on me. Especially Scout in the ham suit!

Later when I actually knew what was happening in the movie. I fell even deeper in love with this film. The relationship Scout and Jem had with their father was wondrous and moving. There was such an air of admiration for Atticus from just about everyone. Gregory Peck's performance as the widowed lawyer with 2 kids showed the strength, grace, dignity and vulnerability of Atticus Finch during the trial and aftermath of Tom Robinson the black man accused of rape. Mary Badham's performance as the mischievous and willful tomboy named Scout who lovingly reminisces about her mother with her father is so pure and innocent. She and her brother Jem's decision to make the town recluse come out of hiding is a fateful one that will forever change their lives. The book was a masterpiece and although the film couldn't possibly include everything that was in the book all is forgiven because the film is a masterpiece in it's own right.

Val Kilmer - Jason Bourne with no memory problems!

Great plot and great action. While action is not as intense as The Bourne Identity, it is as suspenseful. The ending is a little disappointing, but hopefully leaves the door open to a sequel. Val Kilmer is impressive.

Wet & Salty

Another production from Pixar and they have not disappointed me yet. Animation was wonderful and seamless. The graphics are quite stunning to be fact.

On Abel Gance's Beethoven

On Abel Gance's Beethoven
I have mixed reactions about Abel Gance's Beethoven. It was a great movie and Harry Baur's portrayal of Beethoven was impeccable, but there was too much use of Beethoven's 5th Symphony as soundtrack music. To Gance, Beethoven seems to equal the 5th Symphony. This is untrue. He wrote a lot of great music that was not used in the film. One of the features of this film that I really liked was that it did not include any vulgar sex scenes that I found in the movie, The Immortal Beloved. But what I consider the ultimate strengths of this movie is that it metaphorically shows the composer struggling against the disappointment of hearing that the woman he loves has fallen in love with someone else, coming to terms with his worsening deafness, and struggling against poverty by trying desperately to earn a living through his music. Although most of the scenes are fictional, these scenes are metaphors of his existence as a human being.

They don't make them like this anymore

If you're looking at this page, I've got to assume you're a Jimmy Cagney fan. Cagney absolutely lit up the screen in his portrayal of Tom Powers , bad boy turned gangster. Sure , the film is a bit dated and some of the dialogue is corny but for a good old fashioned gangster epic Public Enemy still can't be beat.
Cagney is the quintissential tough guy and he supported here by a great cast of character actors from the period. The scene with Cagney and Jeane Harlowe where she is telling him " you're the kind of man....and I've known (PAUSE)dozens of them..." is priceless 1930's corn but it works in context. I find it amazing that Harlowe was considered a sex symbol in her day because by todays standards ,she is almost laughable in her bizarre lounge wear and strange delivery.
The story is positioned as a cautionary tale of the tragic results of a life of crime. Very mild in retrospect but a great view into the mores of pre-WWII America. Like looking into a time capsule.
Oh yea, this is the film with the famous grapefruit scene too.
