King of Swashbucklers

This is truly an amazing film. It's obvious that the makers of the film were subtlely trying to draw paralells between the expansionism of Spain in the late 16th century to the turmoil that was occuring in Europe in 1940, the year the film was made. This is done so expertly by director Michael Curtiz that it does not detract from your enjoyment of the film's action sequences. The film is first rate all the way from it's sets, it's score, and editing. I'd like to reiterate an earlier reviewer in stating that the sepia tones employed for the Panama sequences are breathtaking. The performances here are all first-rate with star Errol Flynn as Captain Geoffrey Thorpe doing probably the best work of his career. The always dependable Claude Rains assays a complex account of villainy as Spanish ambassador Alvarez. Flora Robson does a powerful turn as Queen Elizabeth. Alan Hale, usually comic relief in Flynn's films, even gives a restrained performance as Thorpe's first mate. It does this film a disservice to pigeonhole it as a swashbuckler because there is so much texture here that it can be appreciated on so many levels.

A powerful film with very contemporary themes

The film, set in the mid-1800's plays out a Greek tragedy through a Japanese lens. The film's basic story of a young man who is denied knowledge of his father's identity, rebels by joining a gang (of ronin), murders his best friend in order to maintain the trust of the gang leader, and ends up, unknowingly, committing one of the most horrific of crimes is amazingly contemporary. The ending is bloody, but the imagined aftermath is more powerful than any fight scene. Mifume and co-stars are excellent. This is a film I could have imagined Mifume and Kurosawa collaborating on.

Sports Night - The Complete Series Boxed Set - movie DVD cover picture
best show in the history of the medium

Some people use TV as a soporific, others use it to be engaged, challenged, surprised, inspired, and energized. Sports Night (SN) was a series for those who appreciate the latter. SN redefined how television shows could engage viewers without pandering to or insulting their intelligence. It offered a humorous, realistic and thoroughly engaging view of intelligent, human and witty career professionals working in a high-pressure environment.
Given that nowadays "character driven" on a television show means "stereotypical," these characters live and breathe, and week-to-week, I couldn't wait to find out what they'd do next.
One of the many interesting things about the way SN evolved, was that the ER-style camera work and interwoven, fast-paced dialogue made the traditional network TV model of having a laugh track punctuate every "funny" moment woefully inappropriate. As the episodes progressed, ABC wisely allowed the show's creators to drop the laugh track and let the story unfold without such unnecessary commentary.
Another surprisingly well-handled aspect of the show is how it embraced the fact that actor Robert Guillaume had a stroke midway through the series by enabling his character to tackle, onscreen, the questions of competency, careerism, and identity such a crisis might engender.
I don't know if I'll ever forgive ABC for its lack of courage and vision when it came to canceling the show, but with this DVD set SN is finally free of their unappreciative clutches.
If you like your entertainment to do more than offer you a preview of this fall's fashion offerings, Sports Night is for you. Any fan of television that rewards paying attention, like the West Wing, Six Feet Under, or M*A*S*H* should give Sports Night a try.

Tony Scott and Denzel Win us over Again!!!

What a team. Not only a great movie based on a "True story" but also some great cinematography. Something you see a little more of lately but has a very good action feel to it. Not only was the story and acting excellent, but the soundtrack was also perfectly in sync with the movie. Dakota Fanning also did a great job and helped make the movie much more appealing and human. Thank the lord they got De Niro off of this film, Denzel was perfect.

The critics were wrong

I HAVE SEEN THE FILM AND EVEN THOUGH AS A WRITER MYSELF THERE ARE CERTAIN THINGS THAT WOULDNT NORMALLY HAPPEN I THINK IT IS SOMETHING YOU HAVE TO LOOK PAST. I THINK EMILY FOX DID A GREAT JOB ON THE SCRIPT WITH BILL AND ADAM AND DENNIE GORDON DID A GREAT JOB DIRECTING.
THE FILM ITSELF WAS PACY AND VERY FUNNY IN PLACES. THE MUSIC ROCKED ESPECIALLY MARY KATE PLAYING THE DRUMS. THE DOWNSIDE FOR ME IS THOUGH THE FILM WAS WRITTEN WELL THE FIGHT SCENES WITH ASHLEYS JANE AND MARY KATES ROXY FOR ME COULD HAVE BEEN FILLED WITH MORE EMOTION. I KNOW IT MUST HAVE BEEN HARD TO DO BUT IM LEFT WITH THE QUESTION WHEN ACTING HAVE THEY THE ABILITY TO CRY?
IF THERE HAD BEEN A FEW TEARS THE SCENE WOULD HAVE BEEN COMPLETE FOR ME.
IT TOOK ME TO A DIFFERENT PLACE WHILE I WATCHED IT BUT IT NEVER TOOK ME TO THE ULTIMATE PLACE WHICH FOR ME WOULD HAVE BEEN STANDING NEXT TO MARY KATE AND ASHLEY WHILE THEY WERE FIGHTING.
EUGENE LEVY WAS EXCELLENT AS MAX LOMAX (VERY SQUARE) AND ANDY RICHTER JUST MADE ME LAUGH WHETHER THE LINE WAS FUNNY OR NOT.
I HOPE IN THE FUTURE THEIR FILMS PAN AWAY FROM THE BOYS SUBJECT AND MAYBE GO MORE INTO THE DRAMATIC SIDE OF LIFE.
I RECOMMEND THIS FILM AND IT WAS GREAT TO SEE JACK OSBOURNE SPRUCED UP TOO.
BUY THIS FILM AND ENJOY IT. AND GET THE SOUNDTRACK TOO.

Beautiful indeed

This movie has everything, You can't help but love every character, and feel each individual person's life. Whether your gay, straight, a mother, friend or WHATEVER. It has warmth, tenderness, understanding, I just can't go on. I can't stop watching it, I even got my parents to watch it, and they love it. This should be a required movie to see in all 50 states, I'm certain hatred, bigotry, and so on will go on a downscale immensely.

Great show, waaay too expensive DVD release

I probably don't have to sell anyone on the quality of Northern Exposure. It was a simply charming and wonderfully entertaining show. For its content it deserves every star.
But I just bought from Amazon the 22 full episodes of the second season of West Wing for $39, the 22 second season episodes of ER for about the same, and the 18 episodes of cruelly cancelled Freaks and Geeks for just a bit more. Those shows were pretty high-quality too.
And Universal wants to charge me that much for the *eight* NX first season episodes? Not in this life, fellas. I'll just rent the NX shows, recognizing that this could damage the prospects of further Northern Exposure releases. That would be a shame, but you've got to throttle this kind of greed right in its tracks if you don't want to see more of it.

polanski's best film

Repulsion is the masterpeice of director Roman Polanski and one of the most disturbing films ever made. The movie refuses to be outright scary instead it goes at a decaying pace as you see Denueve slowly and quietly go made which is more disturbing than scary. Polanski tells the story visually and uses a technique of deleting sound at key moments which is a brilliant move. Themes of mental decay and the faceless nameless rapist that denueve sees are very powerful. Overall and excellent, disturbing film that stays with you for your hole life.

...

This is one of the best movies I've ever seen . The reasons:
1. They had some Phat cars and they had some doped out engines.
2. There were hot girls in da movie ( the hottest was Michelle Rodriguez) So you can just watch it for the girls.
3. The races were always tight when they had the cars fly down the street.
4. They had J to the A Ja Rule . It was just a tight movie and if I could I would rate Michelle Rodriguez And she would get about a Thousand stars .
So go watch The Fast And The Furious you wont be disappointed.
(Michelle if you read this your the hottest girl I know):) Come visit me
