Just one of "those" films.....

North and South is just one of "those" films that you either love or you hate. And if you love it, you fall hard. When N&S first came out, I was too young to understand what I was watching. But it was one of those films that I grew up with. It was something I came to watch with my father all the time and a bond between us. It's just such a great film by an amazing author... I'm dying for it to come out on dvd.

Grave of the Fireflies - movie DVD cover picture
Why DO fireflies have to die?

What can I say? This is the *Braveheart*, the *Titanic*, the *Schindler's List* of anime - *Grave of the Fireflies* is a tear-jerker with three-hanky ending. You WILL cry. I promise. However, it's worth seeing. This masterpiece shows us that there is nothing noble or glorious about war. The "enemy" has a face. As Americans, we didn't have to watch our homes be destroyed by air raids; we didn't see our love ones charred to a crisp in fires started by fighter planes. With the exception of Pearl Harbor, the war was fought overseas and far away from our homes. *Everyone* is affected in a total war. This two children are orphaned and their struggle to survive is heart-wrenching. This isn't a war movie about soldiers like one would expect-- this is a war movie about what happens to ordinary people. I don't understand how anyone could want to fight a war after seeing *Grave of the Fireflies*. I think the director is showing us something about ourselves and our society. I've tried my best, but I can't describe this movie in words. You have to see to believe. Also, young children should not watch this movie- war and death are graphic. I've had the image of little Sasuko burying the fireflies in my head all day and the image of her mother being thrown into a mass grave (what Seta sees when he sees his sister burying the insects). Please, watch this movie. Watching Miyazaki's *My Neighbor Totoro* afterward with the kids is a great idea since it's a happy movie.

GoodFellas - movie DVD cover picture
Cultural diversity?

GoodFellas immerses you in the strange, violent world of armed, ignorant thugs. The Mafia depicted here clings to no pretenses of civility. Everything is about money and power, and no one--not even "made" Mafiosi--are immune from a bullet to the back (or front or side) of the head for just about any reason. Walk a little funny? Get shot. Talk back? Get shot. Bust someone's chops? Get shot. GoodFellas, in fact, spirals into a blood bath of gangster killing ganster for reasons ranging from revenge to keeping mouths shut permanently.
The story is told from the perspective a young Irish-Italian boy who becomes an errand runner for thugs who hang out across the street from his blue collar home. The money, power, and freedom of being above the law are too much for him to resist, and, soon, he becomes a young, murderous thug himself. Ray Liota, who plays this central character (and provides splendid narration), follows this path to its natural conclusion--a cocaine-addled, unfaithful, narcisstic mob informant. The transformation is spectacular to watch, particular in the scenes leading up to his final arrest, complete with overtones of paranoia, a mysterious helicopter that seems to be shadowing him, the creation of an elaborate meal, a remarkable scene between the drug-snorting Liota and his junkie mistress, and a cranky, crazy drug courier-baby sitter.
A word of warning: GoodFellas is brutally violent. People are dispatched, graphically, with guns, knives, and ice picks. Frankly, the story wouldn't be as gut-wrenching or honest without the casual brutality of these animals in full display. It makes the ease with which they kill all the more bizarre.

Good and wholesome family entertainment!!

The "road" series are tremendous fun. Despite having seen these movies many times over we still enjoy them each and every time that we watch them. My wife and I have introduced these classics to our children who have become avid fans of Bob Hope, Bing Crosby and Dorothy Lamour. When you think of Bob Hope you naturally think of the ROAD series. This is comedy that you can share with your family without fear inappropriate content. Enjoy!!

Mission Impossible 2 - movie DVD cover picture

I hadn't even seen the first Mission Impossible movie so didn'tknow 'exactly' what to expect when I went to see the sequel in a UK cinema recently. It was absolutely fantastic. It has a very similar structure, story and similar characters to the recent excellent James Bond films but has more engrossing and awe-inspiring scenes of action and fantastic scenery.
The cast all perform brilliantly especially the supremely talented Mr. Tom Cruise who puts in another outstanding performance. Dougray Scott as the bad guy also deserves credit for his performance as does the rest of the cast.
I recommend this film to James Bond fans and all action/adventure/mystery/thriller fans and fans of similar genres.
All in all, an excellent film!

This DVD saved my sanity!

My daughter is now 11 months and has watched this DVD at least once a week since she was about 3 months. When I need to get something done all I have to do is pop in this DVD and she will sit in front of the TV watching until I turn it off. NOTHING will draw her attention away from this DVD. Now that she's much more mobile, she likes to play while the DVD is going in the background instead of just sitting there glued to the TV. On several occasions she's been so tired and cranky after she gets home from daycare that she won't eat her dinner. All I have to do is put in Baby Einstein and she calms down, eats her dinner and goes straight to bed.

Pink Floyd - Live at Pompeii (Director's Cut) (Jewel Case) - movie DVD cover picture
A true masterpiece

Firstly, one has to say that pre-Dark Side era of The Pink Floyd is just as good as what followed the greatest album of all times. This way, it is quite obvious that Live At Pompeii should be extremely good. But it's not just it. I bought the VHS expecting to watch one of the greatest band of all time doing their well-known songs live. And that's not what I found. I found the greatest band of all times rediscovering their own songs, and making it so beautifully that I would call it mystical.
The set list includes the 23-minute-epic-masterpiece "Echoes", much better than the original version. The chemistry between the band is so intense that you actually feel as if they were all doing just one thing: magic, not music. Each song is played slowly, yet intensively; few vocals are heard. Waters roars as a lunatic in Careful With that Axe, Eugene, while volcanos furiously spit magma. Gilmour murmurs softly a kind whisper in A Saucerful of Secrets, after Mason performs an amazing set of double bass drum. Even a dog is "invited" to "sing" in Mademoseille Nobes, which makes it even more strange (in a positive way, believe me). If you're a die hard Floyd fan and loves songs such as Careful With that Axe Eugene, Echoes and One of These Days, go for it. If all you have ever heard from the Floyd is Another Brick in the Wall and your idea of their songs performed live links to bricks falling from the stage, forget it.

Ronin is an Instant Classic De Niro and Jean Reno movie.

This movie is an instant classic for Robert De Niro and Jean Reno fans. Natascha McElhone is a lovely dazzler combining a sensuous understated beauty with a journeyman actor's presence. With a simple look or a roll of her eyes she speaks volumes. De Niro has never been tougher or more compelling as the everyman, Sam. He reminds me of Bogart in his grittier roles. Jean Reno is quickly becomming one of my favorite actors. He is a man's man with a sincere delivery and deep sad eyes. He also adds the aura of the world weary but stoic Frenchman to the mix. I love French and the bits of French dialogue interspersed in the movie resonate with wryness. The interplay and rapport between the Jean Reno and Robert DeNiro characters plays true and is one of my favorite things about this relatively realistic action film. Frankenheimer has a superb eye for detail and the cutters have done a marvelous job. This story will keep you on edge for most of its running length. The action scenes are cut in broad swaths that leave you wanting more. Get this film and an Audi S8 while you're at it. You wont be sorry.
