Just enjoy the magic!

After reading all of the critiques of this DVD presentation, I am amazed that I still enjoy watching this film. Instead of thinking too much about the technical aspects of translation, try sitting down with this movie and let its beatiful story roll over you. It will make you wish that you were 13 years old again, when your innocent view of the world was both shaken and renewed by the acts of others. If you are a parent, you must buy this for your jaded, modern children. Mine were entranced, presumably by the idea that Kikki could live on her own whle still maintaining her dignity and sense of responsibility to her new friends.

Funny, romantic plot and really catchy, fun songs!

A really good, classic musical. First watched before my school chose this as the spring musical two years ago. Still find myself humming the songs.

Banjo, anyone?

City folk Burt Reynolds (Louis), Jon Voight (Ed), Ronnie Cox (Drew) and Ned Beatty (Bobbie) take a canoe trip down a backwoods Georgia river which will soon be flooded out when a new dam is constructed.
The foursome hire some possibly-inbred hillbillies to drive their cars down to Aintry to be picked up later. Off they go downriver. They encounter small rapids, bugs, and then Ed and Bobby are assaulted by two unpleasant hillbillies. They make Bobbie drop his drawers and squeal like a pig, and tell Ed he has a "real purty mouth". Louis and Drew sneak up on them and kill one of the men as the other runs off.
This leads to a moral dilemma among the four canoers. Do they tell the cops? Do they bury the body and act innocent? They make a decision, and continue downstream. At one point going through some rapids, Drew falls overboard, apparently shot by the second hillbilly, and Louis breaks his leg. Bobby camps out with Louis as Ed climbs up a cliff to reconnoitre and ferret out the second man. Finally, they continue down to Aintry, where they recuperate, and are questioned about their experience.
The screenplay was written by James Dickey based on his book, and he has a small part as the sheriff who wonders what the men had been up to.
Good ensemble acting (probably Burt's best role), beautiful photography and locations, and a great story make this an impressive movie. Oscar nominations for director (John Boorman), picture and editing, and Golden Globe nominations for director, picture, actor (Voight), song ("Dueling Banjos") and screenplay. The reasonably-priced DVD has the R-rated full-screen and wide-screen format movie, a good documentary, English or French language and subtitles, Dolby sound, chapters, cast/crew/production notes, and a trailer.

This is why people fly!!!

Aside from "Fletch" & "Caddyshack" this is one of Chevy Chase's most memorable movies,It is about time this movie gets the DVD treatment it deserves, In this Chase is Clark Griswold, an overworked family man who wants to take his family on a cross-country road trip from Chicago to Los Angeles in an effort to make up for some lost time with his kids, Beverly D'Angelo is perfect as Clark's patient wife, as they begin their trip, everything that can go wrong does, starting with being ripped off by a sleazy car salesman (Eugene Levy) who sells them a souped up station wagon to making a wrong turn in St.Louis & ending up in a crime ridden neighborhood, only to have their hubcaps stolen when Clark ask for assistance on how to get back to the interstate to stopping at cousin Eddie(Randy Quaid) who is near broke & downright distasteful, to taking Aunt Edna the rest of the way who constantly bickers & complains to the point of irritation, to heading off a unfinished road which sends them airbourne to being ripped off by intimidating locals who fix the car later to being tempted by one hot Christie Brinkley in a Farrari, to having Aunt Edna suddenly die, every road disaster is here, & anyone who has went cross country(I have) can see the realism here, I did in 1982 right when this movie was being filmed, so I know, one of the best comedies ever, "Christmas Vacation" is the only worthy follow-up simply because of the return of cousin Eddie, but skip the others at all cost!!!

Fabulous

I know everyone has heard it, and I will say it again: American Beauty is incredible. Very rarely does a movie take a simple concept and create a vast and complex array of characters and their emotions. The acting, cinematography, script and direction are all breathtaking. This movie touches on a world where few can take you: into the simplistic beauty of everything around you. This film has actually changed the way I look at things, and has made me notice things I never have before. Kevin Spacey's performance shows his incredible range of emotional states, and all of them are convincing. The chemistry between Thora Birch and Wes Bently is thorough and flows nicely, creating some charming and moving scenes. American Beauty is an American classic.

Get addicted!!!!!

If you like Vince Vaughn in Swingers and Made..........buy it.
If you like tons of hot chicks.........................buy it.
If you and your buddies rip each other all the time....buy it.

You will get addicted. It's one of those rare shows that flys by. When it's over, you're disappointed and want to see what would happen next.

The characters are believable and hillarious in an authentic way. The dialogue carries the show. This ain't "Friends." No contrived little plotlines. It's just a group of guys living it up in Los Angeles. When you think about it, the writers actually show good restraint. It'd be easy to have the guys doing all sorts of over-the-top things.

The real star of the show is Ari (Jeremy Piven). He's a motor-mouth neurotic agent. He steals every scene, every episode. Think Jay Mohr's character out of Jerry McGuire. Or better yet, an example from Season 2. Another agent says that Vinny has slept with every actress in town. Eric asks Ari if he's going to just sit back and let someone bad-mouth his client. Ari's response: "I thought that was a compliment." Classic.

"I got a fever, and the only cure is more Entourage."

Still great

I can still remember the day before New Year's Eve when I was in fourth grade. One of my friends wanted to take me to see a movie and I desperately wanted to see Hook. Those two and a half hours were magic for me way back then, and they still are. The acting is brilliant, the direction wonderful, and the music surprisingly powerful for a fairy tale. When I first saw Peter gain his happy thought and fly out of that tree, I wanted to jump up and scream, "I knew you could do it!" And you know what? I'm 18 now, and I still feel like doing that.

An Artistic Masterpiece....also very entertaining !!!

This movie is an artistic triumph. The DVD Special Features explain in detail the tremendous amount of time (over two years) and skill it took to create this unique vision of the "future past". More than any movie in recent memory, it recaptures the plot, appearance, and zany fun of 1930's science fiction serials, Hollywood "buddy" movies, science fiction pulp magazine covers, and art deco in general. Some of the background scenes are reminiscent of paintings by Maxfield Parrish, particularly in the Shangri La sequences.

Some reviewers have criticized the acting and plot, holding them to modern standards and thereby missing the whole point...other than the technology employed, this is not intended to be a "modern" movie. Taken in its proper context as a loving recreation of the "golden age" of cinema and science fiction, the acting, plot, and dialog are exactly as they should be, and the advanced form of CGI utilized creates images that could previously have been left only to the imagination. It is unfortunate that this project may not be fully appreciated, simply because the vast majority of movie audiences are simply too young to have any memory or emotional connection to the images and concepts that are recreated so beautifully here.

Although it may not look like anything you have ever seen before, give it a chance....relax and enjoy the ride. I think you are in for a very original, exhiliarating, and entertaining experience.
