Just Glad To Have It...

Finally, the best horror anthology show to ever appear on network television is on DVD! Rod Serling is a bloody genius and spent three seasons in the early 70s scaring me to death! Episodes like "The Doll" are burned into my memory and bring fear and dread whenever I think of them! This was the point I think. Serling spent the 'Black And White' part of his career making us think with "The Twilight Zone" and "Requiem For A Heavyweight". With NIGHT GALLERY, he blew out the lights and let the creeping things loose! No one else could pull off what Serling did with NIGHT GALLERY. He made quality / intelligent / frightening programs in a medium known for mediocrity, during a time of imbecilic sit-coms and cop shows. NIGHT GALLERY holds up today because it's still better than anything else that's on network TV! If Serling were alive, he'd probably have a pretty cool cable show. I'm just glad that season one of NG is here! I don't care about extras, I just love the show! Every episode is a classic. The entire collection belongs on DVD. Highly recommended...

Margaret is still the master of her domain!

This DVD is great! She revisits some funny aspects of "I'm the one That I Want", in addition to hilarious new material. As always, there is just a little bit of poking fun at her mother...but just a little bit. Her mix of comedy and story telling is a refreshing reprive from the toils of everyday life. And I will never look at Haagen Das Ice Cream the same way again!

Where'd this come from?

I am a long time Heinlein and SF fan - at 40. I saw Starship Troopers, the movie, and was a bit let down at how Paul V. treated it. This animated series somewhat gets back to the book. I was very pleased at the quality of both the CGI and writing. Give us more!

It's a Wonderful Life - movie DVD cover picture
My Favorite Movie of All Time...

This is the kind of story that transcends all generations and ages and speaks to each individual. It is associated with the Christmas holidays and rightly so. Yet the movie's story about a good man who is frustrated with his life to the point of suicide speaks as loudly today as it did in 1947.
Some critics of "It's A Wonderful Life" call it "Capracorn" (making reference to the movie's director, Frank Capra), and say that it is unrealistic sentiment, but I disagree. The story basically shows how a man's life unfolds through a period of years in the town in which he was born. What he thinks are disappointments and cruel tricks of fate actually lead him to the place he always wanted to be. He is shown what the lives of his loved ones and friends would have been like had he never been born. He realizes that those small acts of kindness and love that he has given to people were not insignificant, but made major differences in each and every life.
Particularly moving is the scene where the protagonist, George Bailey, superbly played by Jimmy Stewart, prays a silent, but desparate prayer in the town bar. The answer to that prayer gives George Bailey some unexpected twists and turns, but shows the fabric of his life is so carefully interwoven with those he loves and cares for.
This is American filmaking at its very finest. I highly reccomend this for the whole family.

THREE "B's" Barbra/Best/Breathtaking.

Well, this DVD offers us all 2 hours of pure entertainment. Barbra's struggle for excellence is present in every segment of the MEGA show. The table cloths matching the tea cups...matching her gowns...the lights, the songs, the story and her performances...She truly deserves all the accolades. Barbra has once for all proved that she is UNIQUE...Listen to her rendition of ALFIE....It is a journey to HEAVEN accompanied by angels...PEOPLE sounds better than ever with the choir...Watching TIMELESS (like her other shows and films) is truly a life-altering experience .It is love at first sight and the certainty that this very LOVE is everlasting.Congratulations BARBRA! You have enhanced my life for over three decades now and I am very thankful. I am looking forward to the day when all her TV specials will be released in DVD format.PEACE to you Barbra and to the World!!!

All time great movie

Braveheart is one of the all time great movies. It has it all, great acting, engrossing storyline, excitement, romance, laughter and above all, fantastic battle scenes. Despite the militaristic nature of the topic this movie goes down well with both men and woman. This is not solely because it stars the good looking Mel Gibson (so my wife tells me), but it's because he excels in his role and is aptly supported by others in the cast. I know of a number of people who have watched this movie well over 50 times and can recite the lines verbatim. Okay, we are not all that devoted to the movie, but it goes some way to conveying how much this movie has captured most peoples imagination. Can't really add too much more about this movie that hasn't been said already by previous reviewers, suffice to say this movie has done exceedingly well, what it set out to do. Essential viewing really.

Spirited Away - movie DVD cover picture
Not just great animation-A great film, period.

Like many others, I first encountered "Spirited Away" when it took the Best Animated Picture Oscar, and was theatrically re-released. I originally went with some trepidation, because while I'm a huge animation buff, I've never cared much for anime. I went to see Akira in the middle of its hype, and walked out shaking my head, muttering "All style, no substance. Depth of a puddle." I've since had others tell me Akira was overrated. I'm inclined to believe them.

Anyhow, Spirited Away changed my mind forever. Saw it twice in the theater, and bought the DVD the minute it ame out. What a gorgeous film. Distrubing images? Certainly. Like ANY good fairy tale. Snow White, Pinocchio, Alice In Wonderland, Oz-these all contain bits of nightmare. But it's "Good Scary" as opposed to mindless fright.

Is the movie confusing? Only if you need to have plot lines and characters telegraphed to you. If you don't like to think about a movie, by all means, run screaming from Spirited Away. But if you enjoy immersing yourself in a fully formed alternate reality, this is your flick.

And what a wonderful message. Chihiro only begins to triumph when she sets herself aside, and sacrifices for the sake of others. Some of the imagery of her sacrifice (Haku's purging of the blackness inside) is spirituality of a high order.

I can understand why serious anime fans might be able to nitpick this movie. It's the same with anyone who's deeply into a subject matter. But, if you're a film fan, especially one new to anime, this is a masterwork, pure and simple. Arguably one of the finest films ever made, any genre, any era.

It's About Time

I just about fell out of my chair when I saw this classic show from the eary 90's was going to be released on DVD, because while I hoped for it, I really never expected it to be released. There are plenty of reasons not to remember Michael Chicklis as "Tony Scali" of the Eastbride Police Department either because you were watching "Walker Texas Ranger" at the time, like so many other people, or you weren't home on Saturday nights where they stuck the series, but it was able to build up a fine and loyal fan base for five seasons, and ABC has not had a hit in that time slot since the Commish was cancelled in 1996 so that says something. Scali was a cop who solved problems with brains instead of braun, something totally different than his character does now on "The Shield." If you remember the show or are seeing it for the first time, either way it would be a great series to own and I can't wait until it comes out in November. Trust me, if you are tired of graphic, gruesome, cop shows, you will love this one and will not be disappointed.
