Jump in . . .

I couldn't possibly describe this incredible, wonderful, beautiful movie as perfectly as Zach Braff, but every single person can relate to such an intimate, personal story. Please go see this movie... see it twice... and then see it again!

I copied this from Zach's blog...

What Garden State's really about is how short life is. And how we get caught up in so many entanglements and insecurities and worries and obsessions and trivial arguments while life races right by us shaking it's head at how seriously we take ourselves. Keep in mind that the sun's gonna burn out in about a million years and truly nothing will have mattered.

Verdi - La Traviata / Levine, Stratas, Domingo - movie DVD cover picture
The second greatest opera film of all time

Only the film version of Carmen tops this breathtakingly beautiful and sumptuous production of La Traviata. During the overture we see Violetta towards the end of the opera, nearing her tragic death. She looks more like a phantasm, especially when seen next to her lovely portrait, painted when she was radiating beauty and health. Act one thus marks the start of Violetta reminiscing about how she and Alfredo fell in love. This is a most effective beginning, and as this is a film it gives us unique new insights into one of Verdi's most well-known and beloved operas. As such, it allows us to view the opera with new eyes, making us fall in love with it all over again. The singing and acting of Domingo and Stratas are outstanding, although that of Cornell Macneil is somewhat stiff. Aside from perhaps tradionalists who believe that opera can only be performed in the opera house, this film version is sure to please opera and non-opera fans alike.

Weird,Quirky, off the wall,I loved it. A car dealer's plot to have his wife kidnapped and held for ransom goes somewhat awry. This movie's characters, from the bumbling kidnappers to the pregnant Police Chief(Frances McDormand) are a real trip. The story line is great and sometimes bizarre. It's a fun movie.

I'm biased, cause this is my favorite movie.

One hunnered thousan dollas, mahn! This is a thoroughly enjoyable flick. A musical who-done-it with an island flair. All the actors can belt out a tune like pros, even Denzel isn't half bad! Visually stunning with brilliant color, on an exotic set, and shot with great angles too. Solid performances by everyone with a riveting plot that is a pure pleasure to watch unfold. The dialog is excellent too and works well with the gorgeous visuals. This is the only movie I've seen where nothing they could have done differently could have made it any better. It's just THAT good. It has the best soundtrack for any movie I've ever heard as well. Now if they'll just get off their keisters and come out with a DVD with plenty of extras, I can die knowing that I've seen everything the BEST MOVIE MADE has to offer.

The Best Movie of 2000

This is one of those films that's not really about much, but has plenty of strange incidentals. In it we follow Tripp, who seems to be permanently unlucky, who gets himself into endless amounts of trouble along with dark student James and his editor Crabtree. What really makes the film so compelling is its outstanding performances, particularly from Maguire and McDormand. Also impressive is the way in which the film itself is narrated by Douglas, making the whole thing seem like a real novel. Of course at the end that's precisely what it is, and that explains why all the ends are so neatly tied up at the end. You'll like this film, but you won't know why.

Beyond Great

For those who say this movie sucked have no idea what thet're talking about. Not only is Vol. 2 the best of the KILL BILL series, but it is one of the best movies that has came out recently. It is all the better because it takes a turn from the already great Japanese story line from vol. 1, and goes out to the old West. This setting is where Tarantino plays off old Western films like THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY, as well as some of the best horror films ever to grace the screen, such as Sam Raimi's EVIL DEAD, also Lucio Fulci's THE GATES OF HELL. Not going to tell the ending, but it is more than satisfactory. With some of the best acting in any of Quentin's films surely adds up to one of his best films. Definetly check it out.

Ghost World - movie DVD cover picture
A hilarious, yet touching comedy

Probably the best praise I can offer for "Ghost World," directed by Terry Zwigoff, is that the film had me laughing heartily from the start nearly to the end. Yes, it's a great comedy. But it's also a surprisingly melancholy and touching character study that is graced with superb performances by an excellent cast.
"Ghost World" tells the story of Enid (played by Thora Birch) and her best friend Rebecca (Scarlett Johannson), recent high school grads who are struggling through this transitional phase in their lives. Early in the film the girls, who scorn much of "mainstream" society, play a cruel joke on an eccentric loner named Seymour (Steve Buscemi). But what begins as a joke leads into a quirky, engaging relationship between Seymour and Enid. The main story is well complemented by some equally quirky subplots, all of which blend together to form an effective larger story.
"Ghost World" is filled with witty, funny, irony-laden dialogue. And these great words are delivered with flair by the wonderful cast. Birch really shines as an offbeat leading lady; her performance has bite, but she's also appealing and vulnerable. Johannson complements her well as pal Rebecca, and Ileana Douglas is a lot of fun as Enid's politically conscious summer school art teacher. And I can't say enough good things about Steve Buscemi as Seymour. He takes what could have been a stereotypical antisocial loser and instead brings real depth and humanity to the character.
The great script and performances are well enhanced by thoughtful, inventive production details; "Ghost World" is almost as much fun to look at as it is to listen to. This is a really outstanding film that effectively deals with such universal issues as alienation, nonconformity, friendship, and the transition to young adulthood.

It's The Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown - movie DVD cover picture
An Easter treat!

This is truly a classic Charlie Brown special! Marcy wastes 3 dozen eggs trying to roast, fry, waffle, or cook them instead of hard-boiling them. Peppermint Patty runs out of money (and patience!). Snoopy goofs around in the mall and generously buys Woodstock a birdhouse (and gets his nose caught in it!). Then of course, there's the Easter Beagle. He comes to bring Easter eggs to all the good boys and girls in the world! Linus promotes his coming, but Sally isn't willing to believe him after what happened during Halloween (in It's The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown). Will the Easter Beagle come? Will he dance with the bunnies, Peppermint Patty, Marcy, and even give crabby Lucy a kiss? Check it out!

L'Argent - movie DVD cover picture
The Visible God

There is something wonderfully "film school" about Bresson's productions. The simplicity of the camera angles, the unique close ups of hands. The way he cuts the sequences of murder. I think L'Argent may be the most violent film ever that doesn't show any violence directly. The unique monotone delivery of speech by his actors and the muted colors all add to the effect of no effect.
Godard once said "Bresson is to french cinema what Tolstoy is to russian literature". Perhaps this is so. Certainly Bresson is seeking truth in his films. His films deal with morality, consequences and events that change the course of one's life. In the case of this film the young man gets set up by the store owner and thus falls into a life of crime. He didn't choose this life but certain events have pushed him down this path. Is Bresson saying we are all victims of circumstances? Is morality then subjective and indefinite? How can we judge someone who has no control over his situation? These are the kinds of questions bresson asks in his films. He is a great humanist and optimist. I hope his films will get a DVD release soon, what is Criterion waiting for?
