Julianne Moore-the most versatile actor of our time.

This is one of those films that starts out funny and ends with a serious undertone, much like Heathers did. Weird, sterile atmosphere throughout, and definitely thought-provoking. If you can handle a slow-paced, dreamlike film, this might be a favorite.

an extrodanary tale of hope dreams and love

I thought this movie was going to be sooooo corny. But I was wrong and it has turned out to be one of my favorites. It has solid, realistic acting from the entire cast and a storyline that is well written and easy to get into.

Second Best Movie of 1998

If you like the type of loosely-scripted, special-effects reliant, grossly over-budgeted action films that Hollywood likes to put out, then go rent a copy of "Godzilla."
Ronin, truly one of the best movies of the year, delivers fantastic action scenes, a superb cast, beautiful European settings, and a slick, suspenseful storyline that keeps you thinking and guessing until the final reel.

My review of Kubrick's erotic psychology:

EYES WIDE SHUT 1999 / Traumnovelle 1925 -- "Dangerous Art" ?
There the defining questions are always : How so? To What? To Whom? It is well known, among scholars, that Nietzsche said : "I believe that I have guessed some secrets of the highest man's soul. Perhaps everyone who guesses them is destroyed." (Trnsl., Thomas Mann; 1947.) Kubrick's so refined adaptation of Arthur Schnitzler's Freudian/Nietzschean novel of fin-de-si?cle decadence, at this climactic turn-of-the-century and outset of a new millennium, takes the form of his culminating masterpiece of cinematic art and sophistication. And is, in a word : Great !
His filmed tribute to and like celebration of all the deep-psychological Mystery in the human condition, reconstructs anew and actualizes those earliest discoveries which motivated very passionate collaborative exchanges between the psychiatrist and the novelist. Indeed we may well contend that our extremely talented director was once again "ahead of his time" with this last film and his own breathtaking exploration of the dream-like reality of the human Soul !
Such examples of the "dangerous" variety ARE perhaps that which is why "we have Art..." at all; that is, "to keep us from perishing from (mere) truth ! " (Nietzsche). It is regrettable that undue impediments have been imposed on our sharing in his "vision" ! ( )

It's awesome to me!

Well, first, I am a huge Peter Gabriel fan. I have been watching the Secret World on VHS for about 9 years and think it is the most amazing rock concert one could hope to see. Saw Gabriel live last November and I like this video better. Now, I have been blessed with the DVD. Second, I am not a videophile or audiophile. Still, I enjoy a good picture and good sound. I played this on the DTS audio track on my Yamaha home amp and JVC flat screen TV. I thought the picture was great and the audio track was awesome. I often heard very strong bass coming from Tony Levin and do not have a subwoofer. I commented at the outset that the sync was very good and noticed how often the lips and vocals seemed together. Now, maybe there are a few places where this is not the case. But, third, I don't watch a video to see how many mistakes I can find. Sitback, and listen. This is amazing music from a man who has been and is one of the most creative musical minds around. When I have a lot of time on my hands, I might do a side by side comparison with the VHS, but not for now. If you like Peter Gabriel more than a little bit, then get this.

Another Great Sequel That I Highley Recommend A++++

This is a good scary sequel. It is also very dark too. The beginning is great and the music and the mental hospital scene we lead up to is awseome. Michael has been in a coma for 8 years since being burned alive in Halloween 2.

While being transferred in the ambulance to another facility from the mental ward Michael overhears 2 doctors talking about his only known living relative Jamie Lylod, played very well by Danielle Harris. Jamie is now living with a family who adopted her. We supposedly know what really happened to Laurie Strode but it doesn't explain in detail. Michael now is after to finish of his only known relative his neice.

Jamie starts to slowly see Michael in her imagination. Donald Pleasance is back to play Michael's psychiatrists and does a great job at it. Dr. Loomis comes face to face with Michael after Michael escapes and he accidently tracks him down, a very scary scene. Michael dodges Dr. Loomis's not very well aimed gunshots and drives to Haddonfield to look for Jamie. It never explains how Michael actually found her, coincidance maybe. He was looking for 8 year olds I assume. I am still not sure. Michael is scarier than ever is this movie.

We lead up to a scene with Rachael and Jamie. Jamie and her stepsister Rachael go trick or treating after Racheal has to cancel a date with Brady and babysit her little stepsister. Rachael and Jamie get seperated and you see them looking for each other in a dark unlit town, pretty eerie. Dr. Loomis figures out that Jamie is Michael niece and eventually finds her and Rachael. They go back to the sherriffs house and barricate the whole place to keep anyone from coming in. This is when the movie starts to really grip you. Michael goes after Jamie and anyone that stands in his way. All the deaths scenes in this movie are very gory. There is a really scary rooftop scene and the special effects are great. Jamie gets separated from Rachael again and tries to hide in her elementary school but she sets the alarm off when she goes in. Racheal and Jamie soon reunite and try to leave town so the local sheriffs can finish off Michael. The ending is brillantly done and scare the wits out of me. I highly recommend this movie if you want to get scared again! It has a few similar scenes as in Halloween 1 which makes the movie more scary!!The DVD bonus contains interviews by Danielle Harris and Ellie Cornell the 2 major start of this film.

Colorful, humorous, splendid, and original !

This film is truly a find ! Arquette is fabulous- as usual, but equally as engaging is Georgia Ragsdale who does a great Jackie-O impersonation in the film. This is one of Don McKellar's more interesting roles, and the old grandfather (Alvin Epstien) brought tears to my eyes. A beautifully photographed film with layers and layers of truths, humour, and sincerety. From female artists who have been forgotton in history, to family secrets, to finding true love and following our hearts, this film has a voice and a message!

Into the Woods - movie DVD cover picture
Sondheim & Lapine Improve Upon The Brothers Grimm!

On the surface it sounds silly and simplistic: Cinderella and her Prince, Little Red Ridinghood, her Granny and The Wolf, Jack and his Beanstalk, Rupunzel, a Witch, a Baker and his Wife all come together in an enchanted wood to play out their famous stories...and then we get to see what happened AFTER the "happily ever after." But "Into the Woods" is anything but silly or simplistic. It is one of Sondheim's funniest and cleverest scores and this DVD version blessedly captures the sterling performances of the original Broadway cast headed by the incomparable Bernadette Peters, Chip Zien and Tony Award winner Joanna Gleason as the Baker's Wife. Sondheim and James Lapine dig deep and make us take a look at the consequences of getting what we wish for, since there truly is a price for everything, and the "ripple effect" of our desires touch the world in ways we may never imagine. It is also a musical about accepting loss and moving forward (a common theme in Sondheim scores, but one eloquently explored here in heartfelt numbers such as "Children Will Listen" and "No One Is Alone."). As an entertainment, you will get more than your money's worth, and along the way, you may learn a thing or two about yourself and your world. I have seen this show about a dozen times and learn something new each time. If you are a Sondheim novice, this would be a wonderful introductory show before jumping into the more complex pieces like "Sweeney Todd," "Assassins," or "Passion."

I'll Throw My Hat in the Ring...

This is a great, great movie...bringing together two geniuses of cynicism, Billy Wilder and Kirk Douglas, at their most cynical.

Even more important, along with two other 1950's masterpieces, All The Kings Men and A Face in the Crowd, The Big Carnival is a devastating commentary on populist media. With the election-swaying power of present day pundits like Rush Limbaugh and Bill O'reilly, this sort of uncompromising exploration of American culture has never been more relevant, or needed.
