Judy Garland Triumphs, Again!

The concert show that is on this DVD is superb. Garland, as usual, was terrific. She sang songs from her Hollywood movies with a musical quality reminiscent of her 1960-1962 concert years while on the road. At the end of the concert, she once agains shows pure magic as she finishes with the song, "Once in my Lifetime" dressed as a Puccini-style clown, the same make-up used in the movie The Pirate which she did with Gene Kelly in 1947. It was pure theater, sending chills up anyone spine watching this number, as performed by the greatest singer/entertainer of the 20th century.
The show with Bobby Darin was okay...Musically, he is no match for her. The best number is when Judy does the song "More" as a solo. She just simply soars with this song. In fact, the song fits her like a glove. Look it, Judy Garland can not and should not share the stage with anyone. She is a one-person stage performer. In fact, when she does perform with anyone else, she is the only one on stage that people really look when the cameras are rolling.
This DVD is, though, a must-buy, simply because Judy sings alone in concert form and she is musically at the top of her form.

A Johnny Depp Classic

Forget Don Juan DeMarco, forget Sleepy Hollow, forget any other Johnny Depp film (except Cry Baby *drool*). This is THE Johnny Depp film. You have to see it. It's Johnny Depp at his best. I've had this film recorded from the TV for ages, and typical, my tape ran out, and I missed only the last 15 minutes (and what a disappointment they were!)
Johnny Depp plays the loveable Sam, who's cheese seems to have come off his cracker. His whole character, moves, voice, and his funny comedic moments are a total take-off of Charlie Chaplin & all those actors from the "good old days". He is taken in by Benny & Joon. The lovely Aidan Quinn plays Benny, looking after his sister, Joon, played by Mary Stuart Masterson (who I still say was in Little House On The Prarie, but no one believes me!). Joon is "mentally ill" or "sick" - the film never actually says what's wrong with her. I think she's either autistic or schizophrenic - sorry if that's wrong, or she's not one or the other, but I always get them muddled up! She lives to a routine (that makes me think autistic), but she switches personalities (schizophrenic?). I love watching this little routine, watching her make breakfast, or the way she goes to sleep at night, or the way she paints - she gets more of it on her than she does on the canvas! Enter Benny. Who she instantly falls in love with. The music behind the love scene is brilliant, and well played by Johnny & Mary.
There's a few classic moments in this film - mainly thanks to Johnny Depp. Just wait til you see him do his whole performance in the park, or his little dance with the bread in the restaurant. Or making a toasted cheese sandwich by ironing it, and making mashed potatoes by hitting them with a tennis racket. If that doesn't make you want to see this film, nothing will. And the classic line? "Raisins are just humiliated grapes". I love this film. It doesn't show much about the mentally ill, and at the end, there's too many things left in the open. Like what happens to Benny & the woman he fancies, Ruthie (played by Julianne Moore)? We see Joon getting her own apartment, but how is it decorated? Are there paintings everywhere? And does Sam move in with her? All will be discovered in the sequel ... I wish.
Bring on the soundtrack!

The most phenomenal movie I've seen

For me, a teen age girl still in high school who is not in the popular class this movie put everything in prospective. If the only people in this movie were other character such as Deana then the movie wouldnt have been so great. You dont realise what it is like to be another type of person, you dont realise how greatly other poeple have dealt with lose and why they are the way that they are. But in this movie you get to see both sides of two very different poeple and realise that they arent that different at all. I belive that this movie was made with very good intentions on how it was going to help people. I think that after the Columbine shooting adults more than anyone asked the question that the entire movie trys to answer... "why did it happen?" And the movie helps you to realise that there are so many different answers to that and even the people that comitted the shooting cant answer it. Its a wonderful movie full of mystery, love, hate, differences, pain, lose, and friendship. Theres something in there for everyone. I dont think that anyone should go without seeing it.

Breathless.

I was intrigued by this movie even before I saw it. In Austin, there was only one movie theatre that showed this movie: the Dobie Theatre. And there was only one showtime: Midnight. People who have seen this movie know why: the movie is very graphic and very disturbing. But it is a terrific film, with powerhouse performances from the whole cast (including Marlon Wayons). Most people I've talked to say that Ellen Burstyn should have won the Oscar. I agree. Jared Leto also did a great job. And kudos to Jennifer Connely for playing such a risky role. All in all, this is one of the best films I've seen this year. I also recommend Croupier, a film about the lives of gamblers and dealers in London.

The most intelligent anime in years

Breathtaking. It's about time that somebody one-upped Evangelion and created a truly epic "giant robot" series with both a thoughtful, intelligent premise as well as spectacular animation. Like Eva, Gasaraki takes a few episodes to get up to speed (the third and fourth episodes on this tape are where the action really kicks in) and the audience, like the series central character Yushiro, is initially forced to figure out what's going on at the same speed that the hero is. This may bother those with short attention spans, but be advised that this series is well worth the time put into viewing it. Thus far I've seen the first twenty episodes in the original Japanese and the first four episodes in ADV's excellent dub, and believe me, every time you think you've got the next plot development figured out, the writers come up with a new way to knock your socks off. Add in the best animated mecha battles in any anime tv series and you've got one of the best giant robot show ever.

It doesn't get any easier!!

I recently purchased this DVD, on the recommendation of some chicks I met at a Weight Watchers meeting. Now, I absolutely DETEST exercise, but I recently lost 67 pounds and figured it was time I start doing something. Well, much to my surprise, this one is really easy and not boring at all! The first mile is over before you know it and you can set your own pace. I believe that I could have done this with no problem, even at my heaviest weight. I am also EXTREMELY uncoordinated-like Steve Martin trying to dance in The Jerk. I was able to pick this up with no problem. I am ready to move on to a tougher workout and will definitely be proceeding with the Leslie Sansone dvd collection.

Demon Knight - movie DVD cover picture
Excellent horror film, dreadfully underrated

Ernest Dickerson (Bones) directed this first feature length film based on HBO's Tales From the Crypt series. Demon Knight is a wildly funny, obscenely violent, and downright fun horror film that went virtually ignored by audiences and critics upon it's release, but the film stands today as a truly underrated horror film. When a mysterious stranger named Braker (William Sadler) comes upon a rundown motel in search of sanctuary, he and the other occupants fight for their lives when a demon-esque collector (Billy Zane) and his hordes come calling. Everything about Demon Knight is top notch: from the eye popping (literally) action and gore to various genre in-jokes to the superb performances (Zane and Sadler are terrific), Demon Knight is a true horror gem. The rest of the great cast includes Jada Pinkett, CCH Pounder, Thomas Haden Church, and B-movie favorite Dick Miller. The newly re-issued DVD is another one of Universal's recent re-released horror DVD's that is extra-less, and at least a commentary or documentary would have been a welcome feature.
