John Woo Did It Again With Face/Off!

This is probably John Woo's greatest achievements. Not to mention that this is the best of all his movies.Nice and great actions from Nicholas Cage and John Travolta! And of course, it's produce by Paramount Pictures, my most favourite company.By why it was released internationally by Touchstone Pictures? But, anyway, a job well done John Woo!

Maximum Overdrive

The Ruling Class achieves something that is almost completely unheard of in film comedy. It hits the ground running with an unforgettable cameo by the great Harry Andrews and almost never loses its kinetic pace for 2 1/2 hours. Peter O'Toole is best remembered as Lawrence Of Arabia and by later generations as the eccentric dandy in My Favorite Year & Creator. But in this gem of a "Only in the 70's" satirical comedy O'Toole gives what will probably rank as his best film performance. It is certainly the best script he has ever had to work with in his brilliant, if erratic, film career.
A star turn in every sense of the word, O'Toole is beatific, haughty, a song and dance man, warm, wise, petulant, frightened and VERY terrifying in his incarnation as Jack The Ripper. He is positively electric in the same way that the 1950-1954 era Brando was. Except that what is so marvelous about O'Toole here is his focus and articulate nature. When he's on top of his game, O'Toole comes across as the most intelligent and the most gloriously insane actor ever caught on film. Whether delivering a long speech or tossing off a one-liner, O'Toole makes Barnes' great words beautiful to hear.
And what a supporting cast! Alastair Sim was at the end of a magnificent career and this gave the actor a truly great send off as a bumbling, didactic Bishop. The scene where he feebly attempts to preside over O'Toole's nuptials is perhaps the most hilarious moment ever captured on film. Coral Browne and a host of great British character actors round out the flawless ensemble. And steering the ship with a steady hand is the underrated Peter Medak. Much like how Spike Jonze brought a dark, melancholy reality to Being John Malkovich, Medak deserves credit for maintaining a consistent reality to ground us in the world of these insane characters and circumstances.
The Ruling Class is almost peerless among screen comedies. Only the best of Buster Keaton, the Marx Bros. WC Fields, Bringing Up Baby, The Philadelphia Story and top-flight Preston Sturges can stand toe-to-toe with it. It was once noted that all great comedies are either very intelligent or incredibly low brow. The Ruling Class, along with those other giants of screen comedy, succeed in achieving both and make it look effortless.

it just is

Not Normally My Cup Of Tea

I have to say that I thought the first Spideman was okay, and I am still surprised at how popular it was. So when I heard about the sequel, I didn't plan on going out of my way to see it. I was never into comic books, and am not really a fan of Superhero stories to begin with. Well, with all the hype and merchandising going on Spiderman 2 caught the attention of my son. He wanted to go so badly, I just couldn't say no. I have to say that I was extremely surprised at how good this movie is. The blend of action, humor and drama is fantastic! The special effects are amazing, and Doctor Octopus should go down as one of Hollywood's greatest villains! Even if you aren't a fan of Superhero movies, there is just too much to enjoy with this film to pass it over. The acting is top-notch and the high flying action will keep you glued to the edge of your seat! I can't say enough about Tobey Maguire. His portrayal of Peter Parker is great. You completely buy him as an average kid who gets caught up in extraordinary circumstances. You actually feel sympathy for this kid who has maybe taken too big a bite of something to swallow, all while rooting for him to start slinging some web. I also recommend seeing Spideman 2 in the theaters, because alot will be lost when it moves to the small screen. If you have been hesitant going to the theater because of the usual hype surrounding "summer blockbusters" which usually fall flat, don't be. Spiderman 2 actually lives up to or surpasses the hype. I will surely be in line when part 3 opens.

There needs to be more movies like this!

I wish we could see more movies about people overcoming trials and tribulations. That's what I liked about "Blue Crush", it was a really good story, with very well filmed surfing shots, especially the pipeline shots and great acting. The music is top notch too. The only true way to watch this movie and enjoy it is with the Widescreen DVD, listen to it in Dolby 5.1 with your home theater if you have it, because I guarantee you it will rumble like heck, because it sure did on mine. There is no DTS track on here which I am deeply saddened by, because I would have loved to hear it in DTS, but the 5.1 track is still awesome! Anyway, I recommend this movie to everyone, males and females, boys and girls, kids and adults. Check it out, you will definitely enjoy Blue Crush. WATCH IT! But I warn you, the transfer of the movie absolutely [stinks]. When I buy the movie I will definitely pick up the Fullscreen because that way I feel like I won't be getting ripped off. Universal needs to get back to quality transfers like The Fast and The Furious, because recent releases like The Back To The Future Trilogy, looks kinda bad for a movie that is supposed to be "digitally restored and remastered". If any personel at Universal are reading this review: GO BACK TO THE ORIGINAL NEGATIVES OF "BLUE CRUSH" AND RESTORE THE PICTURE SO IT LOOKS MUCH MUCH BETTER, AND FOR THE MONEY THAT WE PAY FOR THE DISC WE SHOULD GET A FREE COPY. Widescreen versions are supposed to have the movie looking pristine and perfect! Look at quality transfers such as "Attack of the Clones" and "The Fellowship of the Ring" those show the movie in Widescreen (even the fullscreen transfers look pretty nice) looking sharp and clear. I'm seriously upset at this. But I will not dock any points because the movie is very good and is the only reason why the video portion of the DVD is getting 5 stars. The Extras are cool. And Universal, Put in a DTS track with that new DVD if you ever take up the offer.

Pay It Forward - movie DVD cover picture
Moving Film

Helen Hunt leads an all-star cast as a hard working mom from Vegas, raising seventh grader, Trevor, on her own. Social Studies teacher, Mr. Simonet, played wonderfully by Kevin Spacey, is the crusty middle-aged man who can't come to grips with his painful childhood experiences which leads him through a lifetime of lonely bachelorhood. When he assigns the class an extra credit project to "change the world," Trevor finds an original way to intrepret the job and literally sets out to, one by one, create a hands-on affect on his community. First he befriends a homeless man, Jerry, played convincingly by THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST'S Jim Caviezel, and tries to help Jerry get back on the right track. Jon Bon Jovi plays Trevor's nasty pop, who saunters back into the picture just when Helen Hunt begins a tender relationship with Mr. Simonet. The viewer roots for the PAY IT FORWARD idea, despite numerous setbacks. Angie Dickinson has a small role as the weather-battered drunk mom of Helen Hunt, and we see Jay Mohr intermittently as a fumbling reporter trying desperately to track down the originator of this Pay it Forward "movement." The ending took me by surprise, and I will not spoil it, but suffice to say there won't be a dry eye in the house when you see it for yourself. This one is a keeper!

The Day the Earth Stood Still - movie DVD cover picture
Thrilling 50's Sci-Fi with a Punch!

An unidentified flying object is circulating the earths atmosphere at a speed of 4000 miles per hour and people begin to fear what it wants. When the flying saucer lands in Washington D.C., soldiers surround the spaceship and are extremely nervous. As the aliens exits the space craft, they says that they have come in peace and then raise a strange metallic object. This triggers a solider to shot the alien who falls to the ground and as a result a giant robot appears from within the spaceship and begins to eliminate all hostile objects. However, the alien orders the robot to cease destroying the human weapons and is helped by the humans. At the hospital, a creature looking like a homo sapien appears from within the space suit and he wants to see all the leaders of the world, which is explained to be rather difficult due to the ongoing Cold War. The Day Earth Stood Still is a frightening science fiction story where the concept of aliens appearing on earth is reversed to what is more popular in cinema. The story keeps the audience chained to their chairs in suspense which also can cause the audience to loose itself in thoughts. In the end, the cinematic experience proved itself to be fantastic.

Eyes Wide Shut - movie DVD cover picture
Kubrick's final film

Although this movie confounded audiences and was dismissed by critics, given time "Eyes Wide Shut" will come to be recognized as belonging among director Stanley Kubrick's best work. EWS puts a microscope to the complex--and Freudian underscored--psychology of married sexuality. Hence the director's decision to cast Cruise and Kidman (a real-life married couple) as the movies leads.
The movie's logic and story are dream-like in their progression. Those looking for straight-ahead Hollywood storytelling will be frustrated and/or disappointed. This film has all the psychological complexities of Kubrick's best films (2001: A Space Odyssey," for example), while at the same time being the director's most intimate work.
The entire cast is excellent, as is the screenplay, and the direction is up to the standard that Kubrick has established with his earlier films.

Not only for X-Men Fans...

I was stunned how serious this film brought the comic to life. There also were many quotes and moments that become even better, if you know the comic. I don't think it is a good idea to make movies out of comic books but this time and with one or two Tim Burton movies, too, it worked very well. Anna Paquin, Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen are absolute convincing, justifying every modification made on the character. Even ruce Davison was great and let no doubt about the sincerity of his action occur. The only thing that bothered me a little was that - at least in the german dubbed version of the film - small touch of "arrogant right hand" put onto Cyclops but here, too, I think fans of the comic book now better. Although he always said to be no fan of the comic, Bryan Singer seemed to have made a film full of love for the material making that over the top characters like Magneto or Sabretooth appear serious and true. "X-Men" stands way above the usual superhero flicks in character and plot development but also doesn't try to look more real through cutting superpowers to a more realistic level. And for the visual expressiveness, seeing someone carrying a tray with glasses of champaign in Wolverine's dream or Professor Xavier graciously standing up from a chair inside Kelly's memories are just two little details of many, where the action movie grows to be art. I surely can't wait to see Beast or Gambit in action but for a sequel it would also be an idea to concentrate more on the characters that are standing on the side line in the first movie like Storm or Cyclops. After all "X-Men" is a great piece of film, fun to watch and almost flawless in portraying some of the greatest comic heroes of all times and lets recent superhero flicks like "Batman & Robin" look even more hollow than they already are. I hope, their will be more films like "X-Men" in the future but I also hope, that Marvel understands that there is a big difference between the movies and the comic books and don't repeat the mistake of letting a film change an already existing comic like they did with "Blade".
