Jim Henson and George Lucas Together, No way!!

Probably one of the msot magical and wonderful stories out there has to Be Labyrinth. The tale of a young women who wishes her brother away and then msut journey through the land of the goblins to rescue him. With an incredible performance by David Bowe as the Goblin King this is a movie that everyone must own.
This movie took around three years to make if I am correct. The reason being is the fact that they ahd write a script, the large number of puppet's and characters, and the set design alone could of taken a helluva lot of time. However when the dust settled and it was all said and done, the team of Jim Henson and George Lucas produced a masterpiece.
This is one of my all time favorite childrens films. Reason being is that one fact, it is magical and phenominal. I know I didn't say much about the movie its self, but this is just one fo those you have to see to believe.

Pi - movie DVD cover picture
"Pi" is the journey of a mind

The movie "Pi" is the journey of a mind on a quest, one that is a naturally driven human endeavor to find those secrets of life's many meanings. "Pi" seems to have a pre-requisite need of a 150 IQ to be fully understood tho. The depth of looking for those subtle patterns in nature, can be disruptive to the psychological-dynamics of the working mind. The grainy black and white texture of the movie is not meant as a pretentiously artistic display, but meant to represent the hazy process of an obsessively focused mind working on a resolution. "Pi" is the all-encompassing and all-consuming mental state of 'Tripped Breakers', one that sits on the edge of salvation and/or insanity. In other words; A true "Twilight Zone" state of mental consciousness.
If you have ever pondered on a topic that does not fit the ability of the minds capacity to understand, then you know what happens when the mind trips its breakers. The subject of a God, that always was and always will be, is a good topic to attain this state of tripped breakers. Just try to ponder on the possibility of a life force, that had no beginning or birth which will extend into infinity or will never die. Such an ad infinitum going in two directions at the same time is not a concept that can be rationalized by the finite abilities of the human mind.
You may believe in a God with no beginning or no end, but rationalizing it is another thing. Sean Gullette who plays Max Cohen, has an intuitive understanding that a pattern to the mathematical equation of Pi exists, a pattern which will explain many of the mysteries of life itself. Director Darren Aronofsky gets a triple-kudos for an excellent job of weaving this journey together with those subtle paranoias, that accompany such a mental state as 'Tripped Breakers'.

Doesn't get much better

This collection of videos is one of the best deals going. If you are a Pantera fan then this set is for you. Contained within this collection you get to see the progression of the band as a whole and of the members themselves. It's amusing watching Phil's hair styles through the years. My favorite scenes are all of the band partying. There's nothing better than seeing the kinds of tricks they pull on each other, how they act when they're trashed and just realizing that they're all normal people. If you want personality then wait to see Dime, especially in 3: Watch It Go. His personality is hilarious. Watching the stunts he pulls on everyone is rioutous. For getting a closer look at the band and how they all work, this collection is where to go.

Sense and Sensibility

Ang Lee's first Engish-language film, "Sense" is a vivid period drama, intelligent and involving, and benefitting from Austen's skewering of English social mores, gossip and materialism. Young Winslet is striking in a fiery, star-making turn, more than holding her own beside the gifted and appealing Thompson (who also wrote the screenplay-and got the Oscar for it).

A COOL AND SEXY POST-MODERN COMEDY!

Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson have teamed up create the scariest and funniest film in over a decade. This satirical piece of post-modern comedy is more original than anything this side of the millenium and can do very little wrong, depite being too clever for it's own good at times but who cares, this is simply Craven's most inspired and mature work to date. With seemingly an old premise the movie is set in a peaceful American suburbia around a teenager called Sidney Prescott(Neve Campbell), who is haunted by the memory of her murdered mother, exactly one year prior, where a psychopathic lunatic describes his apparently irrational vendetta against a group of teenagers. 'What's your favourite scary movie?' the killer croaks down the phone line, and here he's surely speaking for Craven and Williamson as they knock off the cli'ches with panache, and the doomed characters with irony. Despite being a comedy this is scary stuff! Intelligent and frightening - at last a horror\comedy to shout about! Craven has matured from his exploitation days of 'Lat House on the Left', and created something which resembles the originality and flare of Carpenter's 'Halloween'. A film that everyone must see!

A Beautiful Mind (Full Screen Awards Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
The Academy Awards got it right!

"A Beautiful Mind" certainly is the best picture of the year. Based on a the true story of the paranoid schizophrenic, John Nash, who went on to win a Nobel Prize, Russell Crowe took on a difficult and demanding role. Jennifer Connelly, who plays his understanding wife, won an Oscar for supporting actress and her performance was also excellent. The highest accolades, however, must go to Ron Howard who directed it and Akiva Goldsman who wrote the screenplay. They certainly deserved the awards they won and, while good actors can be found everywhere, it is that special combination of knowing just what words to say or angle to shoot a scene that made this the perfect film.
It wasn't just the story, which is, in itself, awe-inspiring. It was HOW that story was told and the message it proclaimed loud and clear that made it a winner. The audience was pulled right into John Nash's mind. We saw and felt his delusions. We thought they were real. And we were right there with him as he gradually came to realize that they were just a product of his mind. Then, as story developed, we learned a valuable lesson, one that relates to all of us whether we admit it or not. If it is possible for Mr. Nash to live with his demons and go on and make a valuable contribution to society, then all of us can learn to live with ours. This theme rang true as I watched the film, and will live with me long after. It's a beautiful concept and "The Beautiful Mind" is a winner on all counts. I give this film my highest recommendation. Don't miss it!

A Farewell to Arms - movie DVD cover picture
In 1933 this was "The Best"

This movie hit the theaters before "For Whom the Bell Tolls" was even written. Hemingway was already a popular novelist. Helen Hayes makes Gary Cooper a star in this movie. Adolph Menjou as the friend who misunderstands their love is very good as well. The first world war as seen from the eyes of lovers, becomes a new more romantic war where the horrors of bombs and poison gas and tanks take the back burner. Tragedy in it's most classic of forms..young lovers.

Truly Scary

There have been only a handful of horror films I have seen that have ever genuinely scared me, the first of these of course being "The Shining" (I mean, the scene where Jack Nicholson is making out with that corpse is enough to make anyone want to just hop in the shower and turn the water down to "ARCTIC" and spend the next four days trying to wash the image away) the second is actually "Event Horizon" (though I suppose sitting in the second row of the theater can make anything scary, like when I saw 'Meet the Parents', "Gah! DeNiro's Mole! It's gonna kill us!") and the third is this film. Sure, most of the scares are of the 'jump-out-and-scare-you persuasion, but that's never stopped me from liking the movie! And this film is no exception, sure it's not like the old Castle production with ol' V.P. himself. But then again, no movie is like the old Castle production with ol' V.P. himself! No remake is ever as good as the original! Of course, it's not exactly like the old Castle production has exactly withstood the test of time. Let's face it, it's MST3K fodder! This is the one time when a remake can actually do a story some good, and what better way to do that than to head up the supporting cast with Jeffrey Combs as Dr.Vannicutt. Lovecraft fans, you all know what the good sir Combs can bring to a film, so there's no question about the quality of this picture. The other actors each bring their own bag of tricks to the piece, Geoffrey Rush making a fantabulous V.P. look-alike and Taye Diggs making for a great protaganist. Chris Kattan isn't half bad either, though as I watched, images of him speaking incoherently while talking people through how to land an aircraft kept plaguing my mind, distracting me from his otherwise flawless on-screen performance. All in all, one to see, especially (of course) with the lights out and the sound up!
