Jackie Chan at his finest

First Strike is one of the best Chan movies out there. This one not only has loads of action, humor, and amazing stunts, but it features an actual plot! It is very rare to find plots in todays movies, but First Strike shows that it can happen. Jackie Chan is the man!

best military movie ever

this movie stars,in the first, part a psycho drill instructer who says things that would make a prisoner blush.he was a real life drill instructer for 8 years.some say 12.this was his first ever role and he more than convinced me.the basic storyline is that theres boot and then the boys go off to nam.i dont recall seeing anyone in this movie anywhere else.that is except the drill instructer who is on the tv show mail call now.this is not for kids.i dont say this often but most teens will probably think this is a bit much.the directer stanley kubrik made this film so you know its a 6th favorite movie ever and second favorite kubrik film.theres the very sadistic drill insructer,a suicide, very intense war moments and much much more!i think a lot of people wont be able to handle this requires a certain degree of maturity.theres a hooker who comes up and says"me so horny",you might remember that from the 2 live crew song.shes alright i guess.the drill insructer gave an awesome performance!there are many intense parts.hazing, extremely vulgar language, suicide, and an intense scene where thier buddy gets shot.he falls and the sniper continues to shoot the victim but non-lethaly.a guy would run out and get killed.the sniper reeled them out one by one like that.thier friends were helpless and had to watch thier friend be picked off piece by piece.that would totaly suck!its the best viet nam movie ever!

One of the best historical films ever

the production design, the music, the attention to period detail, the plot, the actors all fit together in this story of cynical, deluded people betraying each other, themselves, and their country amid beautiful sets and photography. This is an historical film for adults, not some adolescent escapism like Shakespeare in Love.

Intriguing look at synthetic life.

This movie offers an intriguing look at souls. Are we merely the flesh that makes us or in the case of the replicants the synthetic flesh. Ridley Scott did an excellent job on this film.

A real laugh and a fresh change from Hollywood tradition!

The'REAL CANCUN'had a relatively short screening time in Australian cinemas, and as a result is not widely known, however any Aussies I know that did get to see it absolutely loved it! The DVD & soundtrack CD have been just as hard to get hold of in Australia (thanks to Amazon I now have both). I just get lost in the humour and fun of the movie and if you take the movie too seriously you will not enjoy it. Take it for what it is, get a few mates around in the summer time, sit back, relax, have a few drinks, put on 'REAL CANCUN' and just enjoy. Happy watching! PS as a result of the movie and friends of mine having been there before giving it a good wrap, I will be heading to Cancun for spring break 2004 with a group of friends...might see other fans of this film there.

Em's first and best movie

This is one of my favorite movies that I own. I've seen it about 4 times and it never got old. This is a very inspirational movie for those who want to be rappers. Even if you don't wanna be a rapper, it's still an inspiration. Eminem's a good actor, and so is Mekhi Phiefer, so if you like either of the two, see this movie.

Verbose Veneration For Vermeer's Visualization

Widely known as the "Dutch Mona Lisa", "The Girl with a Pearl Earring" is universally recognized as one of Johannes Vermeer's masterpieces. After more than a century of study, the work still poses significant questions. Who was the sitter and was the painting even intended as a portrait? Why had it remained in complete obscurity until it was rediscovered in 1882 and sold for the mere pittance of a reproduction? Did Vermeer sell this painting during his lifetime? Many questions surround this masterpiece. Tracy Chevalier's novel is just one of the many historical tales that COULD HAVE happened to answer the unanswered.
All of the characters are strong in this well made, period piece. Collin Firth's most excellent portrayal of Vermeer, Scarlett Johansson as Griet, the Vermeer Family maid, Judy Parfitt as Vermeer's mother-in-law, Maria Thins, Essie Davis as Catharina, Vermeer's wife, and the disgustingly lurid, Van Ruijven is played aptly by Tom Wilkinson.
I won't give you a blow by blow of the story as you should see it for yourself. It is mainly about the unrequited lust and love between Griet and Vermeer, their eye for art, and the many similiarities that they share.
The cinematography, music, & lighting are TOP NOTCH and it's like watching a Vermeer painting come to life right on your TV screen.
You don't need to be an art lover to love this movie. If you like period pieces like, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Valmont, Room With A View, House Of Mirth, and the like, you will enjoy this film.
Happy Watching!

Amelie - movie DVD cover picture
Altruism and Amelie

This film merits five stars. Altruism is the vacuum which nature abhors in human relationships; the title character confronts this dilemma with imagination and great sense of humor. At first glance, it may appear that the director has approached the interior struggles of Amelie with very broad strokes, based upon the title character's overt actions. However, the director is working on many levels and with exquisite subtlty. This gem of a movie slips messages to the viewer on many levels via the vehicle of the title character's apparently outrageous reactions to her emotional environment.
Imagination is the ever-present unseen character of the piece. Unlike David Lynch, who tends to overwork some metaphors, this director's approach, while nonlinear, is nevertheless sublimely coherent in its depth of layers. The character of Amelie is engaged in a struggle to nourish her soul, while at the same time acknowledging the reality that altruism is the vacuum nature abhors in human interactions. This awareness presents challenges to Amelie in her dealings with others and also with herself.
Like the title character, the director manages this internal conflict with superb imagination and a great sense of humor. This is the story of a series of small truimphs and setbacks building to the resolution of Amelie's inerior struggle. While the journey is a wild ride that does not appeal to all tastes, the resolution is a powerful argument for life, individuality and resistance to templates imposed by society.
Amelie is a deeply meaningful, humorous, feel-good movie. The outlandish elements employed are artfully used to provide the resolution of Amelie's emotional pain resulting from the clash of her altruistic nature with the realities of the world crashing down around her. Any attempt to "tone down" these outlandish elements would have resulted in not giving Amelie's great heart and imagination the voice they deserve in proportion to the voice of the unrelenting realities of the outside world.
Amelie is the purr of the Cheshire Cat. See Amelie to reconnect with that "inner child" we hear so much about. See Amelie to give your imagination muscle a workout. Amelie is a stunning affirmation of the proactive approach in embracing life!

A Simple Plan - movie DVD cover picture

Sam Raimi is probably one of the most underrated directors of all time. A Simple Plan is a perfect example of his brilliance. This is a story of two brothers and thier friend who find a duffel bag full of money in a crashed plane in a rural area. They must decide if they are going to keep the money or turn it in to the authorities. Bill Paxton is superbly cast as the "conservative" brother and Billy Bob Thorton is "brilliant" as the slow witted Jacob. A Simple Plan is extremely intense throughout. An example of the "domino effect" when it comes to trusting another person. The cinematography in A Simple Plan is outstanding. It takes place in a rural northern american town in the dead of winter. A feeling of "cold seclusion" is evident throughout the entire movie. The soundtrack is "creepy" and very fitting to the surroundings. Any movie directed by Sam Raimi is worth watching. Any movie that has Billy Bob Thornton (one of my personal favorite actors) in it is a must for anyone who loves brilliant acting. Put these two geniouses together with a very smart and intense storyline and you have A Simple Plan. A must see for anyone who appreciates great cinema!!
