JUST PLAIN COOL!

THE LONDON ASSIGNMENT is a remarkable short film. It captures the fun and excitement of the Van Helsing character and universe as it tells a remarkably rich and sophisticated story, given its relatively short running time. Though I liked the animation, this one seems to belong too the writers who create a fascinating story and deliver great action-movie dialogue that Hugh Jackman delivers with style. I hope we see more animated Van Helsing films by the same team.

Musik Trienniale Koln 2000 - Berg Lulu Suite / Debussy Le Jet D'Eau / Stravinsky Firebird / Boulez, Chicago Symphony Orchestra - movie DVD cover picture
modernist showcase of impassioned performances

The on-going winter residencies of Pierre Boulez with the Chicago Symphony is fast becoming legendary. Maitre Boulez began over ten years ago with concerts of the modernist repertoire of Berg, Bartok, Stravinsky, Webern, and proceeded backwards with fascinating readings of Mahler and Bruckner. These relatively recent post-romantic rendevous for Boulez began many years ago with his associations with Otto Klemperer in London in the Sixties. Boulez was a frequent enthusiastic attendee to Klemperer rehearsals and these interpretive experiences have remained with him.
Here the selections from "Lulu" are sketchlike premonitions of the power of this subversive 12 tone opera. Ms.Schaefer sings in between well placed orchestral 'interludes' so that the ambience is much like a concert aria-tone-poem, without the vocal moments dominating. The CSO playing reflects typically the Boulez penchant for, clean, precise, balanced moments, not afraid of rendering ugly expressionistic timbres, structurally controlled to its details. The thorny, sculpted structures are very clear. Ms. Schaefer has a commanding stage persona,non-threateningly beautiful, with short auburn hair with a rich uncompromising voice, dark when necessary, and deeply mindful of the lyricism that was the creative center for Berg's aesthetic. She brings this sensitivity to the two Debussy orchestral songs as well, one early work from Baudelaire and the three Villon settings from Debussy's mature years.
Included here as well is the complete "Firebird" something Boulez had actually instigated many years ago as opposed to indulging popular tastes with the quick fix "Firebird Suite".The complete "Firebird" rendered within the concert hall venue only works if you have wonderful players, those who now, from CSO understand the Boulez interpretive vocabulary quite well. John Bruce Yeh the Eb Clarinetist is one formidable soloist in the well known dance, which extends past to more clarinet hih register exposure. Also Adolph Herseth, trumpet, Dale Clevenger, Horn, Charles Pikler, Viola, Samuel Magad, Violin. They all also impart their soloistic visions in the service of this massive work. There is then a brief discussion between Pierre Boulez and Daniel Barenboim, this was quite interesting with a focus on some of Boulez's approaches to conducting the modernist repertoire, that there are more layers to clarify within modernist repertoire. They also spoke of the importance of Wagner, as the first modernist in retrospect.

AWSOME, BEST MOVIE EVER!

This is a bad movie. Plain and simple. The plot is barely existent, and the acting is either bad or melodramatic. So remember: don't buy this movie, don't rent this movie and don't even look at the picture of the movie.

A Sparkling Spanish Comedy of Errors!

It seems we are in a time for the release of many fine Spanish films and the release of the DVD KILOMETER.0 is one of the best. Directed by Yolanda Garcia Serrano and Juan Luis Ibarra (yes, two directors and perhaps that is why the story is so equally cognizant of the female/male interpretation of relationships), this beautifully paced, hilarious, touching, tender comedy has it all. 'Km.0' is the very center of Madrid and serves as a coincidental meeting point for each of the 14 characters in the story. Mistaken identities, curious consequences, chance fortunes and misfortunes, surprise discoveries all collide and the result is a fun and entertaining farce that keeps your attention through the film. Each of the characters (a prostitute, a novice film director, gay men out for internet encounters, hustlers, middle aged needy women, sisters at opposite ends of the values spectrum, a sexually uptight fiancee, a needy bartender, a frustrated actress/singer, a guardian angel, etc) is well fleshed out and everyone of these disparate characters finds the entry to our heart at the end of a day. The cast is uniformly excellent: each one finds the center of the character so that we know the characters as well as we know our best friends. The musical score is a delight, the views of Madrid and the funky interiors of the various rendezvous all are imaginatively colorful, and the sensitivity of the two directors is secure and mature. This is a little marvel of a film is well worth buying for your permanent collection. In Spanish with English subtitles.

CRACKING!!!!!!!!

The thing that scares me most is how some people can say that this movie isnt funny, when in fact it is better than the first installment, which was also side splittingly funny. This time around the victims of the SM2 makers's wit include - the exorcist, I know what you did last Summer, Charlies angels and House on haunted hill. The dvd shows a featurette in which the cast display, uneffortlessly, a will and desire to throw ideas around and have them considered, this is due to the director of the movie being so open to new ideas and isnt scared to offend people, i think thats the thing about scary movie, it offends but does it shamelessly, not caring who it offends as long as it makes us laugh thats what matters. I would reccommend people go to HMV where they offer 2 DVD's for ?20 and they should get Scary Movies 1 and 2. They will not be dissapointed. I promise.

Shrek (Two-Disc Special Edition) - movie DVD cover picture
Funny for kids and adults alike

What do a smelly ogre, a talking donkey, and a beautiful princess have in common? When they come together, they will make you fall of your chair, couch, or whatever you are sitting in, trying to catch your breath from laughing so hard! Shrek is a fast paced, funny, thrilling, emotional, roller coaster ride that will make you laugh, cry, and worry about the characters as they face a love sick dragon, a rather short dictator, and try to live in a world where fairytail creatures are being banned from their homes.
What starts as a adventure to get his home back, Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers) finds himself thrown into situations that he has never faced before. He must open his heart, and his home to those who grow to like him. The donkey (voiced by Eddie Murphy) is Shrek's likeable and laughable sidekick on the trek.
To get his home back, Shrek must find the princess of an evil "wannabe" king's dreams. With a series of quirky adventures, Shrek finds himself facing something that an ogre has never faced before...Love.
But is there something more to the princess that meets the eye? Buy this movie and find out. The laughter is almost nonstop, you find yourself forgetting that these characters are animated, and care for them. It is a good family film, one that everyone can sit down, watch, and enjoy.

Atanarjuat is Inspiring, Aboriginal, and Empowering!

I love this movie because it is a masterpiece. I enjoyed the Arctic scenery and the display of the Inuit culture. This movie portrays tribal people in a realistic and dignified manner. I liked the storyline, music, and cinematagraphy.
I am going to see it again on the Big Screen before it is removed from theatres and buy it on DVD when it comes out because it is worth it. I hope those of you that liked this movie will do the same and give your financial support to tribal movies made by tribal peoples who are trying to empower and enlighten us to tribal cultures and issues that affect them.

comfortable contemporary feel

When I learned they were remaking the original "Sabrina," I couldn't fathom any reputable actor would even attempt to fill Bogart's shoes. Yet Harrison Ford was a more than suitable choice. Julia Ormond, however, lacked the confidence Hepburn portrayed, making for a Sabrina not nearly as charming as the original.
Several years after seeing the remake in the theatre, I watched it again some Sunday afternoon, and was surprised by the affect it had. When not compared to the sassy, comical, melodramatic romance of the first movie, this new version - considered on its own merit - is a pensive, mature romance that takes its time considering small details, as Ormond emerges as Ford's humble equal, rather than being duped by infatuation.
I watch it about every other year now, and as I grow older, I only enjoy more this movie's careful attentiveness to detail and the lack of emotional manipulation characteristic of Hollywood romances.

A top notch comedy with some very funny lines

I am a big fan of Eddie Murphy and thats why I bought this movie. He did a great job acting, writing and directing this movie. For him to do all that is a mere accomplishment. Richard Pryor was funny also playing Sugar Ray and the legendary Redd Foxx was outrageous as Benny. The way they all out smart Bugsy Calhoun and Phil Cantone was brilliant and some of the lines in this movie are funny such as the conversation between Quick and Ray which goes like this: "I shot her Ray!" "Was the sex really that bad man?" And when Ray picks up the phone and says "Dominique LaRue" with Benny saying "Uh oh, that voo doo girl!" LOL. Classic! And Arsenio Hall crying and shooting a machine was hysterical and when he and Miguel Nunez fired the machine guns and the other guy shooting his little pistol after them was funny. A gem among Hollywood comedies!
