Wagner - Das Rheingold / Levine, Morris, Jerusalem, Ludwig, Metropolitan Opera (Levine Ring Cycle Part 1) - movie DVD cover picture

First of all,let me put it out flat in a simple question:Do you want to watch a performance of DAS RHEINGOLD and of the whole tetralogy DER RING DES NIBELUNGEN which adheres quite verbatim
as much as it is possible to do so to what the author/composer
wrote? If the answer is no,you'll do well with the alternative
video versions by Patrice Chereau,Harry Kupfer and Nikolaus Lehnhoff, also in the market.I'm not even gonna mention the newest Stuttgart one under Zagrosek because it really deserves no attention. You can read my full review of that poorly bleak interpretation of the cycle, perhaps written by a bunch of prankster kids in adults'clothings. That is definitely not what
Wagner wanted. This MET cycle is not laid out in a naturalistic fashion...It is simply produced THE WAY THE COMPOSER WANTED IT
PRODUCED...An that is more than good enough for me.
Excellent singing by James Morris's Wotan paired up with veteran
Christa Ludwig, one of the finest singers of the past century.
A grouchy Alberich by Ekkehard Wlaschiha(who has made the role one of his specialties)and a great Mime brought about by viennese character tenor Hans Zednik.
How much more into place falls the voice of bass Jan-Hendrik Rootering here as Fasolt compared to that shameful shot taken at
Wotan in the Stuttgart cycle!(And I said I wasn't gonna talk about it...Sometimes anger management is a real need!)We also have an illustrious Fafner by finnish bass Matti Salminen, who will return as one of the most diabolical Hagens I've ever seen
Jerusalem's Loge is a real treat indeed. This fine Oberhausen-born german tenor who started his career as a bassoonist and later on as a baritone, finally becoming a full tenor portrays the trickster god with a natural approach which will also be repeated in his both Siegfrieds. We can't obviously compare with
the "ancient generation",but what a luxury this great artist, who has already retired was! Wish we had a Jerusalem or a Peter Hofmann(another victim of that lousy Parkinson disease!)nowadays!
Recap:Otto Schenk's stage production is the ONLY TRUE ONE to the musician's intentions. If you want to know exactly what he wanted to convey, well this is the ticket, and no other,I repeat
NO OTHER video nor DVD will give you this.
Need I talk about the MET's orchestra under Levine? Just draw your own conclusions...
RATE:EXCELLENT-Compared to this one,no other video version exists, believe you me-I kid you not.
There's also an excellent digital transfer to DVD to be acknowledged upon which I'm basing this humble opinion, although I also own the videotapes.
Buy it without even stopping to think twice!

for once second part is best

I ever thougth that second parts never were good, but in this case I must say not only this movie is one of my favourites, but for me is better than the first version "Wages of Fear" that is considered a masterpiece. Well, both films are very good. I know "Sorcerer" isn't the most popular nor valued but each one has his preferences and the theme of the man which has to figth with all chances against ever was my preferred and in this film these is very clearly put in the screen. Both films have very good players, but I think in this, is one of these rare cases when color and modern making better the final result, because in general, remakes are poor and low the dramatism, but undoubtly "Sorcerer" is an exception and has something ever impress me. There's not adventures for children and cinema of today almost never attains this.

This video captures the essential brilliance of WSB

I saw this video in 1994 as a fledgling WSB fan and quickly became a loyal reader of all his books and, have been seeking out other cameo performances ever since by one of the most influential sub-culture writers of all time. This video provides us with the brilliant insights of a reasonable, highly logical individual who just happens to have the genuine, but obscure talent to make us realize some of the undesireable - and sometimes unfathomable truths of life in the modern world. The mono-tonal voice of cynical eloquence is captured in this video, along with rapturous images of the artist work on canvas. The "fireside chat" style of the interview, paired with dubiously positioned questions on life, death, and consciousness are cleverly interlaced in between readings of some of WSB's finest excerpts. As a relatively new, but life-long WSB afficionado, I highly suggest this video to start off your wonderous journey into the mind of an incredibly gifted, off-kilter literary phenomenoh.

High Quality and High Quantity

I must confess a bias as Rushmore was already my favorite film after seeing it on the big screen and on video rental. The Criterion Collection DVD, though, has made the best even better. If you love this movie, this disc is a MUST OWN! Feature length commentary, a making-of-documentary, and more provide HOURS of tremendous behind the scenes insight. If you only kind of like the movie, give this a shot. And if you dont like the movie or have never seen it, you are really missing out. Certainly not without critical acclaim, it is my belief that Rushmore never found its niche upon its release, but over the course of five or ten years will become a premiere "cult classic," a term which I guess is a backhanded sort of compliment implying a narrow audience, but that audience (including me) is all the luckier to be a part of it.
Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson are an incredible writing team and composed one of the few scripts Bill Murray had ever seen that was nearly perfect. (Yes, I learned that in one of the many other extras on the disc.)
Its charming, whimsical, hilarious, bittersweetly romantic, and my favorite film of all time...and Ive seen a lot of them. The Criterion Collection DVD bumped it up from number one on my list to NUMBER ONE on my list.

Great older family film

What I mean by that is, it isn't completely homogenized. You're going to have to talk to the kids after the film to make sure they don't rebel against you. Sure, it has plenty of good messages and humor mixed in there, but it doesn't hold down the subversive spirit of rock, which is envigorating. Certainly the film is humorous and inspirational, but the plotline makes it sound like self-absorbed loafer dupes people into doing something that he couldn't have done himself and is forgiven. In other words, there's such a levity to serious subject matter like this that some people don't even realize how wrong Dewey's motives are. I have to give Jack Black and Richard Linklater credit because I don't think that anyone else could have pulled it off. As for the DVD, it's excellent. It captures the adult perspective of Black in the making of featurette, commentary, MTV's Diary of Jack Black. It also captures the kids who are broad draw for the film in the featurette, Toronto Film Festival Diary, commentary, and a portion of Jack Black's diary contains footage of them rehearsing songs for the soundtrack. This DVD captures all the perspectives that you would like to see as a filmgoer who loves the film, like me. Mike White, thank you for writing this for lovers of Black and Rock. Extra points for acting in the movie as well, you were perfectly cast. That is all.

This Is *The* Most Amazing Movie...

Keanu Reeves makes an excellent serial killer, if I do say so myself. James Spader is really cool as a burned-out FBI agent. Marisa Tomei puts in a good preformance too. The music is amazing in this movie - I highly recommend you buying the score. If you listen carefully in the beginning, you can catch one of the songs from The Matrix. (another excellent Keanu movie) The visuals are stunning, I really like the effects and off-center camera angles - they really add to the drama. You start to feel for the characters after a while - Keanu is tripped out in this movie! All in all it is a wonderful expirience - bad reviews aside.

Pat on Dvd...this rocks

This is what a collection of videos can be on Dvd. Excellent sound (5.1 dolby) Very inclusive....I think every one of her videos are here along with some live concert footage. The video transfer is crisp and'd never guess some of them are 20+ years old. Also the commentary with Pat and Neil is actually fun to watch. Unlike many in the past where all that is talked about is the technical making of the videos and the artsy way we portrayed the song. "Buy this dvd!" you won't be disappointed. PS Pat's new album "GO" is excellent also check it out!

What more could I add?

I'm just going to be another clump of kelp in a sea of adoration, but I still gotta throw my five stars into the ring on this one!

All I have to say about "Firefly" is that the series' 14 episode run came as close to perfect artistic expression as any television series ever has and probably ever will. Every camera angle, every lighting detail, every line of dialogue seems to have been the outcome of hours and hours of careful planning and obsessive love for the craft. A more action-packed, screamingly funny and throat-tighteningly heart touching a thing has never been commited to film. A single episode of this series kicks the tar out of 99.9% of anything else shown on t.v. in a given season. Even the audio commentaries on this DVD set are a hoot! I'd recommed that Joss Whedon and Nathan Fillion start up a comedy act and hit the vaudeville circuit except that vaudeville's been kinda on the dead side for the past fifty years or so.

Anyone who doesn't like this show is obviously flawed, self-loathing, and a heavy drinker. If there is a "Firefly" hater somewhere in your life I urge you to sever all ties with them! They are of an inferior ilk (i.e. Fox executives) and obviously not to be trusted! Leave them to rot in their smelly puddles of "Ugly Duckling" and "Shallow Joe" and "The Simpleton's Life" while the rest of us sit back and await the coming "Serenity" to take us away!
