For Seekers This is a Must-See

When Miracles debuted on ABC I was so excited. How sad that the appearance of quality television is so rare as to cause excitement - but there we have it. Miracles (an unfortunate title that was too "PAX" for its own good) was interesting - arresting in fact. The tone, the scripts, the direction/acting and the stunning visuals all combined to promise a season of entertainment. But after the third week it got lost. If this program had come along after ABC experienced success with this season's hit "LOST" the network might have understood what they had in this series. As it is, I cannot imagine what programming they had at that time that they believed would be better than Miracles.

Yesterday I found the DVD of the series, purchased it with great anticipation and watched it immediately. It is just as unique and compelling as I had expected. All of the elements that made the show stand out from the ordinary are consistent throughout the 13 episodes included. The commentary is very useful, providing the usual background information and more.... additional discussions of the types of phenomena that Miracles portrayed.

I did recommend Miracles when it was running on ABC - and would have had an easier time of describing it had I thought to call it a spirital X-Files. Now, I do highly recommend the DVD especially for those who enjoy the less violent, more hopeful visions of Steven King or Dean Koontz.

The Others - movie DVD cover picture

The Others is one of the most atmospheric and chilling pictures to be released in a long time. Nicole Kidman is completely convincing as Grace, a woman raising two small children in an isolated and dreary mansion on the Jersey Islands while awaiting her husband's return from France. Before long, three servants show up at the doorstep to help with the upkeep of the house. Who are these people and why did they just appear?
Amenabar, who wrote and directed the film, has his subject well in hand. He is adept at revealing just enough to keep the viewer guessing without sacrificing any of the tension that is prevalent throughout the picture. His use of low lighting helps increase the scariness of the film without crossing the line into absurdity.
The supporting cast, especially the children, is superb and they help make this an exceptional film. Part ghost story, part psychological thriller, this is one film you won't soon forget. It's heart-stopping, thrilling and terrifying. Don't watch this alone in the dark.

Cosy, intriuging and charming...

...Powell and Loy were great audience pulls in their day, rivalled only by Astaire and Rogers.
The genre they present could not be anymore different from the dancing duo however, the thin man series combines the best of sharp eyed sleuthing in a manner which rivals Christie creations, Poirot and Marple, for there is always a near imperceptible clue that is essential to the unravelling of the dhastidly plot. The two players add a touch of essential Americanism from the period to the on screen play. Both are sweet, charming sophistocates with razor sharp brains and wits. Add a touch of that special 30's magic comedy in the style of "Bringing up Baby" and you have this series to a tee. Marvellous and completely classic, you will go on enjoying this for years and it is a long overdue addition to DVD of a great and historically important Movie genre.

lindsay's review

I am actually Mary Jane's daughter and I'm not really sure how to get in touch with BMG to let them know how I feel or what I want. All I know is that I love the show when it was on and I still love it to this day. I know it wasn't the most popular show, but it obviously developed a pretty large fan base. All I'm saying is that the full series should be made available to the fans, especially the die-hard fans. I have been trying to get the complete set, VHS or DVD, for some 4 or 5 years now. I think I remember seeing a few VHS tapes on sale for $30.00. It would be nice if we could get a full set of DVD for like, $40.00. As far as the episodes I have goes, they are excellent and I think that Claire Danes is one of the most exceptional, young actresses to come along in a while. I love this show. I usually cry at most of the episodes.

yet another superb season

The third season of UPSTAIRS DOWNSTAIRS continues the lives of the Bellamy family and their servants of Eaton Place. The time is now 1912, and the Edwardian era is over and the new age of ragtime and the 'flying machine' is on the horizon...
"Miss Forrest" - It is a time of change at Eaton Place. We learn that Elizabeth has moved to America, and James (Simon Williams) has broken off his engagement to Phyllis Kingman. Richard (David Langton) is busy writing a political biography of Lord Southwold, and he has employed the services of Hazel Forrest (Meg Wynn Owen) to help in the assignment. Lady Marjorie (Rachel Gurney) is preparing for a journey to Canada...on the Titanic.
"A House Divided" - The entire house is thrown into shock with the news that Lady Marjorie did not survive the sinking of the Titanic, along with Miss Roberts (Patsy Smart). Richard sinks deep into depression. However, the servants get the shock of their lives when a bedraggled Miss Roberts turns up on the doorstep..
"A Change of Scene" - James is invited for a weekend party at Bunny Newbury's (John Quayle) estate. Hudson (Gordon Jackson) accompanies him in the position of valet, but soon he is caught up in a moral dilemma that will rock his sense of duty.
"A Family Secret" - James, still trying to deal with his mother's death, impulsively proposes to Hazel. However, Hazel tearfully declines the marriage. What is the deep dark secret that prevents her from marrying him?...
"Rose's Pigeon" - Rose (Jean Marsh) gets a huge shock when she discovers ex-footman Alfred (George Innes) on the doorstep, on the run after murdering his male lover..
"Desirous of Change" - Richard is pursued by Countess Lili de Ternay (Angela Browne) who is beautiful but penniless. A touch of romance fills the air as Richard smiles for the first time since the death of his wife. Adding further complications is the new maid Gwyneth (Janet Lees Price) who is a good worker but given to gossip and devious stories.
"Word of Honour" - Richard finds himself in a moral dilemma as he refuses to betray a confidence in the eyes of the law. Once again, Sir Geoffrey Dillon (Raymond Huntley) is called to get the Bellamy's out of trouble.
"The Bolter" - James and Hazel, newly-married, are invited to the Newbury estate for a hunting weekend. James forbids Hazel to take part in the foxhunt, but devious Lady Diana (Celia Bannerman) has other ideas...
"Goodwill to all Men" - It's Christmas, and the entire household is in high spirits. Dowager Lady Southwold (Cathleen Nesbitt) has come for a visit, bringing Lord Southwold's young ward Georgina Worsley (Lesley-Anne Down). Trouble starts brewing when Georgina befriends new maid Daisy (Jacqueline Tong)...
"What the Footman Saw" - Edward (Christopher Beeny) accidentally lets slip some rather-scandalous stories. Refers to events that occurred in "The Bolter".
"A Perfect Stranger" - On her afternoon off, Rose meets handsome Australian sheep farmer Gregory Wilmot (Keith Barron). Romance soon blossoms, but will Rose ever consider leaving Eaton Place in order to marry him?
"Distant Thunder" - Tensions are running high in the Bellamy household. Hazel is in bed recovering from the loss of her baby while James thoughtlessly takes Georgina to a ball, leaving poorly Hazel in the care of Richard.
"The Sudden Storm" - Hazel arranges for the servants to spend the Bank Holiday at the seaside, while World War One looms heavily on the horizon.

Capturing and moving performance

The first time I watched this movie I cried twice, the second time I started crying from the opening credits on. This movie left me feeling warm and envious of this loving family that initially was kept together with sunday dinner at grandma's but later still had the strength through ups and downs to be one. I wish families were more like this where I am from. LOVED IT....
