Based on the continuing masterpiece of Kentarou Miura

This anime is based on the still ongoing manga works of Kentarou Miura. This anime series covers manga's 1 to the mid point of 13. That manga series that is still unfinished is actually up volume 22 at the moment. Hopefully after it's completion non japanese readers, will be able to see it's ending with a 2nd anime series.
This is one of the deeper anime's you will find. The story is very involved, the characters are well developed and the situations are very extreme. This is not a story that anyone would want spoiled for them before they saw it, so I will spare potential buyers from any dissapointment :). I will just say, after seeing animes like NGE, cowboy bebop, Trigun, Kenshin, Escalfowne, and many other well done shows, this anime took a huge jump to #1 on my list.
Just to add, this anime is not for the weak of heart, the hero of the story doesn't take prisoners, and the color red flows strong :) Enjoy.

I love it! Great reality check--I could totally relate to her--although I didn't have to go back to High School to figure things out. The price is a little outrageous for now. I'll wait for it to go down for the video!

The Set Needs to Be Completed!!

The first two sets are awesome and I would love for the set to be completed. A few people at the Truly Outrageous message board have e-mailed Rhino regarding the final release and there's good news and bad news. First the bad news, Rhino said in their response that they no longer have the rights to Jem and the rest of the Sunbow shows. But here's the good news, Sony now owns the rights and Rhino said that they (Sony) plan to reissue the titles at some point. Personally, I don't care who owns the rights just as long as the DVD collection is complete.

And another reviewer mentioned that there were some typos in the Jem Bible. I heard that the Jem Bible was more of Christy Marx's rough draft to show Hasbro when she was approached to develop the show to go with the doll line. Evidently some things were changed or taken out all together when the show actually started production. So that's why some of the things in the Jem Bible are a bit different than what we see in the actual show (what's on the DVD extras are just excerpts from the full version which used to be on sale until Sunbow (or Hasbro, I forget which) asked Christy Marx to stop selling copies).

Voyage of the Nautilus

Kirk Douglas and James Mason explore the mysteries of the deep in the Sci-Fi classic "20,000 Leagues under the Sea". Rumors of a sea monster that attacks ships has open the interests of a curious French scientist (Paul Lukas), his faithful aide (Peter Lorre) and an able harpoonist (Kirk Douglas). Upon a striking encounter, they learn that the "sea monster" is a powerful under-water vessel under the command of the vengeful Captain Nemo (James Mason). "20,000 Leagues under the Sea" is a remarkable adaptation of Jules Verne's stunning adventure tale. The movie features a powerful story, great under-water photography and a rich music score. Kirk Douglas, Paul Lukas and Peter Lorre are well cast but its James Mason's intense performance as Captain Nemo that often drives the whole film. It also contains some impressive visuals and thrilling moments including a gripping battle against a giant squid.

Disney gives "20,000 Leagues under the Sea" the full "2-Disc Special Edition" treatment. The movie is presented in its original theatrical widescreen format. The DVD contains an amazing video transfer and a clear 5.1 Dolby Digital sound. Disc 2 features exclusive bonus material including behind-the-scenes featurettes, its theatrical trailer, a picture gallery and an audio commentary by director Richard Fleischer & film historian Rudy Behlmer. Like previous Disney DVD, the disc also contains forced commercials and trailers of upcoming Disney releases. Overall, "20,000 Leagues under the Sea" scores an "A".

Little Nemo - movie DVD cover picture
A worthy tribute to the legendary comic strip

Winsor McCay's "Little Nemo in Slumberland" (first published in 1905) is justly regarded as a classic among comic strips. Despite this, reltively few people (aside from comic afficianados) are familiar with the strip today. Thus, a "Little Nemo..." movie would have to draw in new viewers without alienating fans of the original. It's a tall order, but Chris Columbus' movie does the job, and earns five whole stars in doing so.

The story is simple enough for young children to appreciate without being trivial or talkng down to its audience. Nemo is an imaginative young boy who enters a fantastic world of dreams while he sleeps. He is welcomed by the king of the land and his beautiful daughter, princess Camille. The king makes Nemo his heir, on the condition that he never unlock one specific door. Urged on by a mischivious clown named "Flip," Nemo opens the door, releasing the nightmare king who is trapped inside. The Nightmare king captures the king of Slumberland, and Nemo sets off to rescue him and atone for his mistake.

Visually, the movie is a triumph. The scenes of Slumberland are truly beautiful to look at. They are filled with vibrant colors, lush landscapes and alien (but still beautiful) architecture. The scenes in Nightmare land, by contrast, are effectively shadowy and unnerving, without going over the top.

Where the movie really succeeds, however, is in the characterizations. Princess Camille is very proper and somewhat haughty, yet never seems annoying or arrogant. Flip is a classic trickster; sneaky, contemptuous of rules and prone to getting in over his head, yet he never comes across as villianous or pathetic. As for Nemo, he actually presents as a kid! He isn't coyingly cutsie, he isn't a smart-aleck nor is he so precocious that he seems like a miniature adult. Such an honest protrayal of a child character in a movie is a rarity. The fact that he is also likeable and his efforts draw the viewer in is a further testimony to this film's quality.

"Little Nemo..." is great entertainment for kids and adults alike, and that alone earns it five stars. More than that though, it lives up to the hallowed comic strip it is based on. That fact makes it more than a great film, it makes it a legend in its own right.

Historical oriented, but more about leadership.

This movie is important for it's historical content. However the leadership techniques depicted are as current today as they were then. Matthew Broderick depicts a character that grows his leadership style over the course of the movie. The soldiers also show great understanding of their goals and importance of their "firstness." The movie plot can be related directly to the story of Jackie Robinson breaking the color barrier for baseball, and the story of the Japanese Americans that left their Utah concentration camps to become one of the most decorated divisions in WWII. Above all it's a story of Americans willing to give up their lives for their belief in what our country is supposed to stand for.

Excellent trip down memory lane

The Schoolhouse Rock DVD brought back memories from my childhood and Saturday mornings. I am delighted I can share these experiences with my daughter.

The DVD has so neat features such as a Jukebox Shuffle which plays the "lessons" out of order. You may also watch them by topic.

A few of the skits/lessons are dated...but most of them still ring true today and provide an easy way to teach kids. I wonder how many folks in their 20s and 30s know the preamble to the US Constitution as a result of Schoolhouse Rock.
