This Film Will Give You The Creeps. Very Well Made.

This is the first time I have ever seen a double-sided DVD disc. One side is the Widescreen version, the other side is the standard version. The Amityville Horror film is loosely based on the real-life account of the son of the Ronald De Feo family who killed all six members of his family sleeping in the house in the middle of the night. His father and himself had a heated arguement prior. The book and the film highly fictionalized the supernatural happenings, however two people (one claimed psychic) who had entered the house after the tragic incidents had taken place had their own story to tell and no doubt other owners of the house as well. In any case, the book became a bestseller and the film was a hit. This film will give you the creeps. I suggest you watch it in the dark for extra goosebumps. James Brolin, Margot Kidder and Rod Steiger offer excellent performances. Don Stroud is also in this film. You might remember him from The Buddy Holly Story (1978) and Licence To Kill (1989). Natasha Ryan is one child you may recognize from Sybil (1976-TVM) and The Entity (1983). K.C. Martel and Meeno Peluce are also recognizable.
Followed by: AMITYVILLE II: THE POSSESSION (1982), AMITYVILLE 3-D/AMITYVILLE: THE DEMON (1983), AMITYVILLE 4: THE EVIL ESCAPES (1989-TVM). And these direct-to-video knockoffs: THE AMITYVILLE CURSE (1990), AMITYVILLE 1992:IT'S ABOUT TIME (1992), AMITYVILLE: A NEW GENERATION (1993), AMITYVILLE: DOLLHOUSE (1996).
The evening hours of November 13/14, 2004 marks the 30th Anniversary of the real horror when the son killed all six of his Ronald De Feo family members. The actual house has had its address numbers changed and has been remodeled for the peace and privacy of the new owners.
A must-see is the documentary "History's Mysteries"--"Amityville--The Haunting" (2000) about the real life killings that took place in the house.
A new movie, The AMITYVILLE HORROR (2005), is a remake of this first orignial film, will be released April 15, 2005

"Robots"-The Oscar Worthy Film

There really wasn't anything in this movie that is going to withstand the test of time as something awe-inspiring, deep, and/or thought provoking. However, I still found it entertaining to watch with my family with a wonderful display of CG technology along with a lot of laughs.

Positives:

1) Humor. Yes, there are a lot of laugh-out-loud moments. Any comedy with Robin Williams has to be. There was some gross-out humor (see negatives) but when they shied away from that, the movie was very funny.
2) CG Animation. The computer graphics were fantastic!! This isn't a surprise as it was made by the same people that made Ice Age. What should leave anybody left with their eyes wide open was when the star of the cartoon (Rodney) was traveling through Robot City in a ball. It would not surprise me if this was the most time-consuming part of the animation creation.
3) Message. This is one of my favorite messages in any movie... if you have a dream never give up in fulfilling that dream. There are also other messages such as caring for people no matter their age, shape, and type.

Negatives:

1) Gross Out Humor: While this was funny, I was surprised that they felt they needed to degrade themselves to the level of flatulence and posterior-jokes. The movie was funny on its own and I felt no reason that they needed to get that desperate. This movie should have been above all that.
2) Portrayal Of Big Business: It seems that this movie carries a negative message about big business. As a child, after watching this movie I would think that big business must be evil and want to control the world. Everything about business (bit or small) in this movie contradicts what really happens in the business world in order for a company to survive. This idea that a large business would be threatened enough to want to kill (literally) an upstart mom n' pop just left me appalled.
3) Lacks originality. There was just nothing ground breaking or original about this movie.
4) Lacked heart. Often times the difference between a good movie and a great movie is the heart of the movie. Again, there wasn't anything original and it seemed like the actors all just coasted through the production. I just didn't see anything that said that a little extra was given into creating this movie.

In the end, I would recommend catching it at least once. The kids will probably get a big kick out of it and desire to see it a few more times. But this would be a good movie to either catch on matinee or even wait to rent it after its video release.

Run Lola Run - movie DVD cover picture
Philosophy + Film + Frantic Pace = an incredible film

"Run Lola Run" (the English rendering of the German "Lola Rennt", of which a mroe literal translation is "Lola Runs") was the feature debut of actor Franka Potente (Lola) and director Tom Tykwer. Both deliver command performances.
The plot revolves around Lola's attempt to find 10 000 marks for her boyfriend, Manni (Moritz Bleibtreu), who risks death at the hands of his gangster boss if he doesn't come up with the money. Lola's response to Manni's frantic phone call in the opening scenes is to run to her father's bank to see if he can help, encountering a series of passers-by along the way.Where "Lola" differs from the conventional structure of a film is that there are in fact three separate stories told. Each features the same general premise - outlined above - but the results of Lola's run vary incredibly. This process was the most talked-about feature of the film, and as such does not come as that much of an adjustment to the viewer in 2003.
As well as the differing end results of Lola's run, the people she encounters have different stories told about them. Lola runs into (literally in some cases) many different characters, a mother pushing a pram and a man selling his bike being the two most memorable. Each of these characters reacts to Lola's presence and then a series of photos is shown explaining what happens to them afterwards - these results also change (drastically) from story to story.
A third feature is the "red scenes" in between the main stories. Tykwer deliberately keeps the audience in the dark as to the meaning of these dialogues between Lola and Manni ranging over various philosophical topics - do they happen before or after the story in question? do they happen at all? regardless, they serve to increase the peculiarity of this film.
And what a film it is. Potente (who also contributes vocals to the soundtrack) is a highly accomplished actor - more familiar to American audiences as Matt Damon's sidekick in "The Bourne Identity" - and is capable of almost every emotion in the book here. Lola's screaming has to be heard to be belived, especially in the opening scenes. Bleibtreu, in what is a relatively small role, proves Potente's equal and it is surely only a matter of time before he too appears in a major Hollywood film. The other actors are somewhat hampered by the pace of the film which doesn't really allow them any much character development - often, whatever development is made in one story needs to be totally discarded in the next. They do, however, acquit themselves adequately.
"Lola" is, after all is said and done, Tykwer's film. From the opening collection of quotes - including the enigmatic "Nach dem Spiel ist vor dem Spiel" (after the game is before the game) - and the ominously ticking clock, it is clear that he is not going to let the audience have a minute to think. Lola's running scenes are shot at strange angles, in split screen and some scenes feaure the same shot repeated three times on the screen at once. All of this is done to a pounding soundtrack of German techno, some of which is composed by Tykwer himself. Tykwer has a wicked sense of humour in places, the toughs driving the car and the sunglasses-wearing nun always provoke laughs. The dialogue between Manni and Lola about Manni's feelings for her is also very well-written, both in the German and the subtitled English. One of the most effective scenes is the opening one, a blurred shot of a crowd of people with a voiceover asking questions like "where are we coming from?" and "where are we going?", followed by a line from the man who is later revealed to be the bank security guard: "The ball is round, the game lasts 90 minutes, everything else is mere theory".
In the end, what is "Lola" all about? That question is almost impossible to answer. Tykwer certainly has something to say, and the general consensus is that it deals with the random nature of modern life and also with the question of fate versus pre-determinism. One thing is for sure, this film is best viewed with friends and family as you will need someone to discuss the issues raised with. Rgeardless of the philosophical bent of the film, it is an action-packed masterpiece well worth seeing.
Is this film for everyone? Probably not. The oddities in the construction will put many off, which is a shame since it is a film which will benefit from the widest possible exposure. This film thus comes heartily recommended for anyone who enjoys a challenging viewing experience and doesn't simply watch movies to be told a story.

Pixar Rules Again

In the last Disney-Pixar film, Pixar shows why they have made millions on their state of the art films. The Incredibles is a movie for everyone, both old and young. It's funny, fast paced and has great voice overs. As always the eye-candy steals the show with amazing imagery and graphics. The story itself is solid and well developed. There is very little about this movie that you can attack. So I feel very sorry for Disney as any hope for revival left with this excellent film.

Don't know what you got til it's gone

It's a story of a girl who feels she's getting locked into marriage before she's gotten her kicks out and experienced the world - so they agree to see other people before getting married, and obviously, it doesn't work out, and everyone involved has to deal with how they've messed up a good thing(s). It's sadly believable, and a overall a feel-good movie. Both leads do a fantastic job portraying their parts.

I have yet to calm down.....

When I found out the Kirk Cameron was a beleiver, I still have to get over the exitement. I grew up with him when he was in "Growing Pains". They could not have picked a better actor for the part. The movie is strickly by the Bible, if you are not moved by it the there's got to be something wrong with you. God is real and I have faith that if you see this movie it will change your life the way the book changed my life.

A Vastly Underrated Movie

GALAXY QUEST has all the touches of a true blockbuster comedy: great acting (even great LOUSY acting...!), top quality special effects, lots of laughs, and a plot that really works--all in perfect harmony and balance. From the time I saw the very first trailer, I was captivated, and kept thinking to myself: "I sure hope this movie lives up to the potential of its plot!" ---IT DOES. For those of you who think Tim Allen is a hack comedian, not an actor... well, he is perfect for this role: a comedian playing a hack actor! Sigourney is great as the brainy lady in the role of the mindless bimbo. And the Thermians--they are the perfect bumbling aliens, without being too ridiculous. Oh, and did I mention the special effects? Very nearly Star Wars class, though on a smaller scale! Unfortunately, it has received very little in the way of publicity, critical acclaim, or popular following. It's almost like a cult "sleeper"... I wish it was more popular, because I Want A Sequel!
