I think i've seen the non-musical version. . .

This was my favorite movie when i was little, even though some of the dialogue seems weird now. =) Some of the costumes are wonderful and the plot is great! There is the typical princess being kidnapped but with several interesting twists, having her become one of the enemy's henchmen. It is similar to other movies at the time, but that can only be expected, so one has to enjoy it for what it is.

This is the greatest band!

I have the video tapes, I have the laserdiscs, now I have the best version of them all. The band did a fantastic job with these DVDs. These are a great buy and a great gift idea for anyone who loves great music. Keep the Faith.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail - movie DVD cover picture
Those responsible have been sacked.

Let me tell you this: the first time I watched this film, I don't think I laughed at it once. It seemed distant to me, a strange film that was sort of comical-looking, but it just plain didn't click with me. A few days later, I told someone I'd seen it, and then, for some reason, in description of it, it became utterly hilarious. And that's the way Monty Python seems to work. If you're not already initiated to the Monty Python style of humor, just go talk to someone who loves it, and suddenly you'll find yourself laughing like you've never laughed before. It's like the film just may be so brilliant that you need a little help to get you to realize that there's a joke, even with it glaring you directly in the eyes. The Python troupe, on top of that, plays it like they're in a period piece for most of the time -- throughout the film I don't believe a single one of them cracks more than the smallest smile. Of course, when I saw the film again, I was in stitches, and I am forever a Python fan. And while one of the most brilliant jokes I've ever seen doesn't appear in this film (it's in Monty Python's Meaning of Life, and it involved an animated leaf), there's definitely more than enough gut-busting Pythonesque madness here to sate your laughter or you might want to check for a pulse -- you may think you're going for a walk, but you're not fooling anyone.

Great for Kids

This review specifically addresses viewing by children, in response to an earlier review by a teacher who found that her students had difficulty watching the movie. I have only used an N of one (my daughter), so this is anecdotal, but she is six years old and we just rented The Miracle Worker this weekend, and she loved it so much she asked me to purchase a copy, which is why I am on the site today. We did talk during the movie to process what was going on, but she was thoroughly enthralled and really got it, including the larger commentary on how society sees the handicapped. By far and away, this beats the MaryKateAshleyHilary stuff out there that's targeted at young girls. I highly recommend this for family viewing!

Emotionally Powerful! An Unforgettable Film.

I had thought that perhaps this movie, taking the original standpoint of a Vietnamese girl during the Vietnam war, could have had something very powerful to say. Instead I found it to be an incoherent film with very little organization. I found myself constantly questioning the motives of various groups, for example the Vietcong and their vicious attacks on the village even though they were trying to gain support among the farmers. I found the movie to be overly dramatic and poorly directed. All in all a less then average movie, which may have gained good reviews from its subject only.

Dark City (New Line Platinum Series) - movie DVD cover picture
A cerebral Matrix

"Dark City" is the intellectual sibling of the action oriented "The Matrix." The film deals with similar subject matter (just what IS reality, anyway?) and has an even gloomier visual style than "The Matrix." There the similarity ends as "Dark City" explores the darkest depths of the imagination. The visuals are stunning, the acting is superb (biggest revelation, Kiefer Sutherlan CAN act) and the ending is quite satisfying. This is a sci-fi film for those who spend their time reading serious sci-fi novels rather than "Star Wars" serials.

Excellent!

I became a BFF fan after they broke up. This DVD makes up for the fact I never got to see them play live. I particularly loved seeing his more raucous fans dancing, singing, jostling each other, and doing back flips in the back. It's too bad this show got canceled, because it was a great format to showcase musicians.

Good Flick

Actually this is the best movie I've ever seen. Don't judge a movie why its cover. The problem with mainstream Hollywood is that you never hear about the better films of the year. This is one of those you probably never heard about but...now you have. Interesting.

This is the Metropolis DVD version to get!

Forget about all of the other Metropolis DVDs out there, this is the Kino restoration that ran in the theaters in 2002. While it is still not in the original 1927 edit, this is the most complete version known to exist. Title cards are used to describe the still-missing scenes, but many scenes have been added by Kino for this edition. This is also much longer than the much sought after Laserdisc.A highly recomended Silent Classic Science Fiction story of a two class world. The underground workers who keep the city running, and the above groung businessmen who live off of the undergrounders work. Trouble errupts when litigation between the two breaks down and a mediator is suspected of being a spy. This 1927 movie seems like todays current headlines.
