In The Mouth Of Madness

I thought that this was an excellent horror movie. I like the concept of Reality being mixed with fiction and not being able to tell what is real. I think that this is one of the best horroe movies of the 90's along with Event Horizion. I just wanted to know what story by H.P. Lovecraft this was based on.

What Have I Done to Deserve This? - movie DVD cover picture
"Wouldn't happen to have a whip, would you?"

In Pedro Almodovar's fourth film "What Have I Done To Deserve This?" Gloria (Carmen Maura) lives in a tiny high-rise flat in Madrid which she shares with her boorish, lazy taxi-driver husband, Antonio, their two sons--one is a drug pusher and the other is a teen male prostitute, and Gloria's selfish mother-in-law who hoards her own supply of mineral water and cakes in a locked cabinet. Gloria scrapes by with a pittance doled out to her by her begruding husband, and she cleans homes and businesses to supplement their meagre income.
Gloria exists to serve and clean up for those she lives with, but underneath that harried housewife exterior boils a woman of passion--the film makes that clear very quickly, but will Gloria ever have the opportunity to be more than an unpaid maidservant? Gloria looks around at the four walls of her squalid tiny kitchen, and wonders how her life got to this point. She copes with her miserable, joyless existence thanks to an addiction to "no-doze" sedatives, but when she runs out of tablets one day, Gloria explodes.
Almodovar films always include deep friendships and loyalties between women, and "What Have I Done To Deserve This?" is no exception to this rule--Gloria's best friend and confidante is Cristal (played with great good humour by Veronique Forque). Cristal is a chatty prostitute who dreams of going to America. Her free-spirited ways are a threat to Antonio who can't really contemplate a woman like Cristal--a woman who may rent her body out temporarily, but she still remains owned by no-one. Cristal is Almodovar's prostitute with a heart of gold. She finds extra work for Gloria, and Gloria's friendship with Cristal eventually leads to trouble.
Some of the best scenes in the film involve Cristal--her open approach to life is hilarious, and some of the scenes with her clients are priceless--the professor who is doing 'research' and the exhibitionist who needs more than Cristal to make up an adequate audience.
While "What Have I Done To Deserve This?" isn't my all-time favourite Almodovar film, nonetheless, I do re-watch it from time to time, and it really is a great film. It is darker than some of his later films, and the bleakness may prove difficult for some viewers to see the film as a comedy. But the comedy is there--black comedy, but comedy nonetheless. The juxtaposition of the television romances next to the squalor of Gloria's real life are marvellously laced throughout the film. Keep an eye open for the ... dentist who wants to adopt Gloria's youngest son, Miguel. Due to themes and language ... this film is not for the Reviewer.

Shallow Hal

I would like to talk toi you about what my impression was in regard to this movie. This movie talks about how many people in our actual society only look at outside qualities in each person when they try to find the perfect woman or man, they only search the outside beauty. They don not think about inside qualities that evyone has, like feelings, thoughts, intelligence, and honesty, which are the most important values in each human being. In addition, they only want to have a beatiful woman or a beautiful man.
In this movie you can see good and bad points. For instance, I can tell you that the most important point in this world is not the external beauty, rather the internal beauty just as Shall saw in Rossmery. Also, I can tell you one bad point that the human beings still have, it is to look at the physical aspect when we need to find our perfect partner.
In this movie Shall is trying to find his perfect woman who must be beautiful for outside, but he has not ever thought in the inside world that everyone has. On day, he found an important businessman who hypnotized him. At this time, Shall could see the inside beauty in everybody reflected in their outside body. Next, he found his perfect woman called Rossmery. In the begining she could not understand him because she knew that she was not a beautiful woman, but she decided to accept him. Then, they shared many things together, and they fell in love with eache other.
Then Shall's friend who could see the reality went to the businessman's office and he explaned to him what has happened with Shall. After that, Shall lost the hypnotism and he was able to see the reality. Then he did no talk to Rossmery and he turned her down. finally, he recognized his feeling and love for her, and ge decided to accept her just as she is. He searched her and they they lived happily ever after.
I think this movie has several topics very controversies inside our actual society with for instance, fatness, ugliness, beauty and inteligence. Also I think that our society is influenced for by different means of communications, which sell us the stereotype about the perfect woman or perfect man. In consequence, many people only search the outside beauty without looking inside each person.
I like this movie because it show that ouside beauty can be the reflection of our inside world. In conclusion, I think that the most important is what you believe about yourself because these thoughts are shown in your outside body.

great BACKWARDS movie !

a backwards movie with surprise beginnings! By going backwards we are like the lead character - we don't know what happened shortly before what is happening now. Unlike the lead character, we do have the advantage of knowing his future. But that does not help us anticipate his past. Very well done movie that I don't mind watching over and over.

A.I. Artificial Intelligence (Widescreen Special Edition) - movie DVD cover picture

I went to A.I. the first weekend having only the professional critics reviews to go on. I wanted so badly to love this movie and was sadly disappointed. This is a terrible movie. Spielberg is so busy paying tribute to Pinocchio, Wizard of Oz, Clockwork Orange and even a bit of his own Empire of the Sun and Close Encounters, that the film quickly becomes a muddled mess. While it is visually stunning, I was completely uninvolved with the characters--didn't particularly find the robot boy played so well by Haley J. Osmet to be compelling enough for me to root for. Disneys Pinochhio almost puts me to sleep everytime I see it as did A.I. The ending is completely illogical.

Best of the Series

Though I have to admit that I prefered Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan, I'll have to give THFRO the nod for the best in the series. The show's brilliant. Brilliant script that is well executed by wonderful acting. Sean Connery's the man. Can't imagine anyone else playing Ramius. Baldwin did a wonderful job playing Ryan. His best role till date. Would have been greeat to have seen him develop the character in the sequels. And furthermore, James Earl Jones aka the voice of Darth Vader makes his presence in all 3 movies felt though his air time's brief. His presence was greatly missed in The Sum of All Fears.
If the studios are planning another Jack Ryan movie..... please get rid of Affleckand bring back Baldwin.

Dynamic Duo

The unflappable blue blood Gary Cooper and the eccentric and conniving Burt Lancaster make for one of the cinema's strangest pairings in this over-the-top Western. Filmed in Mexico, this film has enough gunfights, chases, double crosses, battles, women, wine and song to keep you well absorbed and entertained. However, Robert Aldrich's aloof directorial style was somewhat disconcerting to the Mexican government according to the documentary on THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN DVD. You decide.
